Tral man revives Kashmir’s traditional martial arts

Faroze Ahmad Bhat, a resident of south Kashmir’s Tral is one of the rare faces in Kashmir valley who is deeply involved with traditional martial arts or Sqay.

Sqay locally known as shamsherzani (Sabre-fighting) is an Indian martial arts form of sword-fighting originating from Kashmir valley. The history of Sqay can be traced in early days of Kashmir history.

Since, 1999 Bhat has been playing martial arts, and last year he started his own Sqay martial arts academy for the youth in Tral.

The main aim of the academy is that the youth, who come from different areas of Tral, are provided coaching by their mentor.

The traditional martial arts or Sqay Bhat believes is the fastest-growing sport in the world.

“The School Games Federation of India has already recognised the art which is gaining popularity at the world level also. The Federation organises competitions at the school, district, inter-district, state and national level while the Sqay Federation of India holds events up to the international level," Bhat said. " The art was recently placed in Khelo India and good thing is that it may be included in the Olympics."

Bhat said that since childhood he was naughty and would always fight with children at his village. “Due to my fighting behavior my family sent me to nearby village Diver where a Sikh martial artist taught me all the skills and from there I went to indoor stadium Srinagar, and learnt Thang Ta, Karate, Judo."

Aiming to break a Guinness World Record (GWR) of the fastest K2K journey, 23-year-old Teli pedaled the nearly 3,600 km journey in just eight days, 1 hour and 37 minutes.

23-year-old Adil Teli, hailing from Central Kashmir’s Baramulla district, created a world record by covering 3,600 km between Kashmir and Kanyakumari on a bicycle within eight days, one hour and 37 minutes. Adil broke the previous world record for the fastest bicycle journey held by 18-year-old Om Hitendra Mahajan from Maharashtra, who completed the record for the same distance in eight days, seven hours and 38 minutes. TNIE caught up with the young cyclist, who was recently in the city to find out more about his extraordinary journey.

Adil started his journey from Lal Chowk clock tower in Srinagar at 7:30 am on March 22 and reached Kanyakumari at 9:07 am on March 30. “I rode for 19 hours per day, covered an average distance of 440 km” he said.

Highlighting the challenges he faced during his journey from Srinagar, Adil says “I came across frequent rain and landslides on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. Riding down to the southern part of the country, I experienced a hot climate, which made riding difficult. But I never gave up.” Even though he got a knee injury during the journey, Adil continued to ride and braved against all odds to accomplish his goal.

Adil was passionate about cycling from a young age. He was searching for opportunities to fulfill his long-cherished dream, to set a record in cycling. Besides representing Jammu and Kashmir in various national level competitions, Adil has also played in one junior national and five senior-level national competitions in various sports from 2015 to 2020. It was, however, a ride from Srinagar to Leh that became a turning point in his life. “The only thing that I had in mind was to break the existing world record,” said Adil, who is a physical education student at Guru Nanak Dev University in Punjab.
