SICK AND TIRED OF $15 BEERS

The What: Americans are reportedly “pregaming” again like college students—not because they miss frat parties, but because going out has become ridiculously expensive. Between $15 beers, inflated cocktail prices, service fees, and tip screens asking for 30%, many adults are choosing to drink at home before heading out just to make a night affordable.

The Take: Somewhere along the line, casual fun became luxury entertainment. People aren’t cheap—they’re tapped out. When two burgers and a couple drinks start pushing triple digits, the bar scene stops feeling social and starts feeling financially irresponsible. Suddenly that warm six-pack in the garage fridge looks like fiscal discipline.

    ---

    THE UNCOOPERATIVE

The What: Minnesota Republican lawmakers failed in an effort to compel Rep. Ilhan Omar to testify regarding alleged ties to the massive Feeding Our Future fraud investigation. Critics claim Omar has avoided questions and skipped hearings tied to oversight efforts, while supporters argue the accusations are politically motivated and unsupported by direct evidence.

The Take: Whether the accusations are true or not, refusing to engage only fuels suspicion. In politics, silence rarely calms controversy—it usually amplifies it. The public has reached the point where they assume everyone is hiding something, and every missed hearing or unanswered question just deepens that distrust.

    FAST FOOD, SLOW BLEED

A new study shows California leading the nation in fast-food prices, with several Bay Area cities ranking among the most expensive. Rising labor costs, regulations, and inflation have pushed even basic meals into premium territory, turning what used to be cheap convenience into a noticeable hit on the wallet.

    BENEFITS FOR THE BENTLEY CROWD?

Lawmakers are pushing to close a loophole in the food stamp system that reportedly allows individuals with significant assets—like luxury vehicles—to still qualify for benefits. The USDA is now looking to tighten eligibility rules to prevent abuse and ensure assistance goes to those who truly need it.

    THE “BOTH SIDES” DEBATE

Commentary around political violence continues to escalate, with some voices rejecting the idea that extremism exists equally across the political spectrum. The debate has shifted from condemning violence broadly to arguing over which side is more responsible, further deepening divisions.

    ---

    HOT DOG! SOMETHING’S CHANGING

Costco is reportedly making a tweak to its legendary $1.50 hot dog combo—this time involving the drink side of the deal. While the price remains untouched (for now), updates like switching from soda to bottled water in certain situations have sparked reactions from loyal customers who treat the combo like a sacred institution.

    ---

    NEWSOM ACCOUNTING SERVICE

California is reportedly staring down a massive $30 billion deficit, with additional concerns that the state cannot fully track worker payments across certain programs. Critics argue that mismanagement and lack of oversight have contributed to the financial gap, raising questions about budgeting, accountability, and long-term fiscal health.

    ---

    INCLUSIVE CRIME WATCH

Ann Arbor, Michigan removed neighborhood crime watch signs after concerns they made some residents feel unwelcome, particularly within minority communities. The move is intended to promote inclusivity, though critics argue it may also reduce awareness and deterrence of local crime.

HAVE IT YOUR WAY… SORT OF

Burger King fans are claiming a simple trick gets you a fresher Whopper—order it “off-menu” by customizing it so the kitchen has to make it fresh instead of pulling from the ready stack. Some swear by asking for no salt on the patty or a specific topping change to force a remake. Others say it’s unnecessary and just slows everything down.

    ---

    CHAINSAW HORROR

Prosecutors allege that D4vd used a chainsaw to dismember Celeste Rivas in his garage, sending shockwaves through the community. The gruesome nature of the crime and the details emerging in court have made it one of the more disturbing cases in recent headlines, as investigators piece together motive and timeline.

    ---

    THE WISCONSIN SLOW DOWN

A Wisconsin county made headlines after lowering a speed limit to 17.3 mph—yes, the decimal is real. The oddly specific number is tied to converting from kilometers per hour, creating a speed limit that feels more like a math problem than a traffic rule.

543 No Kings? Where's the Outrage???

NATIONAL DAY: STOP FOOD WASTE DAY

    BIRTHDAY: WILLIE NELSON

THIS DAY IN HISTORY: ROYAL WEDDING OF PRINCE WILLIAM AND CATHERINE MIDDLETON

    ---

    NO KINGS! WHERE’S THE OUTRAGE?

President Trump is preparing for a major state visit with King Charles, complete with royal ceremony, diplomatic fanfare, and all the polished symbolism that comes with it. What makes it interesting is the sudden silence from the same people who spent years screaming “democracy dies in darkness” and warning that Trump was some kind of authoritarian monarch in waiting. Apparently actual kings are fine—depending on the guest list.

American politics has become less about principle and more about selective outrage. If Trump sneezes wrong, it’s a constitutional crisis. But a literal king gets the red carpet and nobody blinks. Either monarchy is offensive to democratic values or it isn’t. Turns out most outrage has less to do with the crown and more to do with who’s standing next to it.

    ---

    STONED MONKS

Sri Lankan police made headlines after discovering Buddhist monks attempting to bring cannabis through an airport. Authorities seized the marijuana and detained the monks, creating one of the stranger law enforcement stories of the week. For a group associated with discipline, meditation, and detachment from worldly temptation, airport weed trafficking was not on anyone’s 2026 bingo card.

Every profession has that one guy who ruins the staff meeting. This time it was apparently monks. The bigger lesson is simple: robes don’t grant immunity from bad decisions. Enlightenment may be a journey, but apparently somebody tried to take the express flight with carry-on kush.

    ---

    PEECYCLING

Scientists and environmental advocates are pushing the idea of “peecycling”—using human urine as fertilizer for crops instead of flushing it away. Urine contains nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, the same nutrients farmers buy commercially for fertilizer. Researchers argue that collecting and reusing it could reduce waste, cut costs, and improve sustainability in agriculture.

Humanity has officially reached the point where saving the planet might require us to rethink the toilet. Somewhere, a farmer is looking at your morning coffee differently. It sounds ridiculous until you realize modern fertilizer is expensive and resources are finite. Suddenly “don’t pee that away” starts sounding like solid economic policy.

    -----

HOW LONG CAN A HUMAN LAST?

The human body runs on limits, about 3 minutes without oxygen, 3 days without water, and roughly 3 weeks without food. The longest verified sleep deprivation lasted 11 days, holding your breath unaided reached over 11 minutes, and one man walked more than 19,000 miles continuously from South America to Alaska. Even lifespan records push the boundary, with Jeanne Calment living to 122 years old.

A missed breath can kill us in minutes, yet the same body can survive weeks without food and endure pain, cold, and isolation far beyond what seems possible, when pushed, we’re a lot harder to break than we think.

    -----

    THE KIMMEL CONUNDRUM

Mentalist Oz Pearlman pulled out of his scheduled appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live after backlash surrounding Kimmel’s “expectant widow” joke aimed at Melania Trump and the chaos surrounding the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting. President Trump demanded ABC fire Kimmel immediately. Pearlman, who had just performed at the WHCD before shots rang out, wisely decided maybe this was not the best week for late-night comedy.

There’s a difference between sharp satire and gasoline on an already lit fire. When the joke lands two days before an actual shooting scare... Suddenly “it’s just comedy” sounds a lot less convincing.

    ------

IT’S THE ONLY WAY TO FLY

Air taxis are moving from sci-fi fantasy to real-world testing. Joby Aviation recently demonstrated electric vertical takeoff aircraft in New York, cutting what would be an hour-long commute down to under ten minutes. The catch? The company says the convenience could come at around the price of a premium rideshare, but early adoption will likely feel more like flying Uber for executives than public transportation.

Americans will absolutely complain that eggs cost too much and then spend $180 to skip freeway traffic. Time is now worth more than money for a lot of people. People won’t ask if it’s practical—they’ll ask if they can expense it. Traffic may finally be solved by simply flying over the people still stuck in it.

    ---

    WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENTS DINNER CHAOS

The What: The annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner always attracts controversy, but this year the bigger headline came from security concerns surrounding a gunman who reportedly attempted to disrupt the event. The incident added another layer of tension to an already politically charged night where media elites, politicians, and critics all gather under one roof pretending they still like each other.

The Take: It says something when the “journalism celebration dinner” needs to feel like a security briefing. Between rising political hostility and public distrust of both government and media, even a black-tie roast night turns into a national stress test. Nobody trusts anybody anymore—and honestly, they’ve earned that.

    ---

    DO WE EVEN CARE ANYMORE?

The What: Americans have become strangely comfortable with dysfunction. High prices, political nonsense, endless scandals, crumbling infrastructure, and shrinking freedoms barely move the needle anymore. Instead of outrage, most people just shrug, scroll, and go back to work. Convenience has become stronger than conviction, and comfort often beats principle.

The Take: It may not be apathy—it may be exhaustion. People are tired. Tired of fighting systems that never seem to change. But complacency has a cost. The more we normalize dysfunction, the more dysfunction becomes the standard. At some point, “it is what it is” becomes surrender.

    ---

    KITCHEN LIES WE STILL BELIEVE

The What: The kitchen is full of myths passed down like family recipes. “Searing meat locks in juices” — false. Aluminum foil on everything? Not always the best move. Washing raw chicken? Actually increases contamination risk. Even the idea that you must flip a steak only once has been challenged by actual cooking science.

The Take: A lot of cooking advice survives because Grandma said so, not because it works. The truth is, good cooking is less about tradition and more about understanding heat, moisture, and timing. Some myths still work by accident—but many just waste time and ruin dinner.

THE KING OF HOT DOGS (THE LEGACY)

Joey “Jaws” Chestnut didn’t just win the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest — he turned it into his personal holiday. His world record sits at **76 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes (2021)**, and he’s racked up **16 Mustard Belts** across nearly two decades. From 2007 through today (with only a brief interruption), Chestnut has dominated the most recognizable event in competitive eating — the one that ESPN actually treats like a real sport every July 4th.

This is the equivalent of a dynasty — think Brady, Jordan, Tiger — but instead of rings, it’s sodium and regret. The wild part? Everyone knows the event, everyone watches it… and nobody is even close to touching him. It’s less a competition now and more a yearly reminder that one human being has completely solved hot dogs.

    ---

THE RECORD BOOK IS STUPID (VARIETY DOMINATION)

Chestnut doesn’t just specialize — he dominates across the board. His resume includes:

    32.5 Big Macs (38 min)

    182 chicken wings (30 min)

    141 hard-boiled eggs (8 min)

47 grilled cheese sandwiches (10 min)

9.6 lbs pulled pork (10 min)

    126 tacos (8 min)

45 slices of pizza (10 min)

13.76 lbs pork ribs (12 min)

    12.8 lbs asparagus (10 min)

    81 mutton sandwiches (10 min)

He holds **50+ world records** across nearly every category you can imagine.

This is where it stops being “a guy who eats a lot” and starts looking like a freak of nature. Hot dogs? Fine. But eggs, asparagus, ribs, tacos — completely different textures, densities, and strategies. This is like a decathlete… if every event ended in heartburn.

    ---

HOW IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE? (THE SYSTEM)

Chestnut approaches eating like a trained athlete:

Uses “dunking” to soften food and speed swallowing

Masters “pacing and rhythm” to avoid burnout

Uses “chipmunking” — storing food in cheeks before swallowing

Trains his stomach capacity and recovery like a muscle

Preps mentally for discomfort, pressure, and timing

This is the part people don’t want to admit — this *is* a sport. There’s technique, training, and discipline. It’s just a sport that looks like your uncle lost a bet at a BBQ. The real question isn’t “how does he do it?” — it’s “why does this level of optimization exist for eating?”

And yet… every July 4th, we’re all watching.
