Trix and Regi’s conversation is interrupted by Faerlin, who has come to take their turn at watch. They sit and carve a piece of wood while Rou tries to ply him with questions. Rou’s curiosity is met with Faerlin’s assurance that he’s not like most servants and is more than capable. They promise Rou that even if they never get paid, he’ll be loyal and will serve Trix so long as it takes, even unto death. When Faerlin leaves to get a higher vantage point, Rou notices Regi has been watching and listening the whole time.
Remembering what Regi had said earlier about dreams, Rou takes a moment to see if he can learn more about the dream that Eight had all those weeks ago. As the conversation continues he realizes perhaps it would be best for Regi and Eight to chat about this directly. When the conversation turns to Regi and Trix’s past, Rou lets Trix’s recent revelation slip and quickly realizes his error. The awkward silence between them is interrupted by a rumble at their feet and the group is forced to deal with one of the desert’s many dangers.

As the ship continues to burn and crumble on the mountainside, Trix introduces Regi to the rest of their current group. In turn, Regi reveals that the mayor from Sparrow’s Landing has put out an open contract for their deaths. He tells them that while she doesn’t plan to go through with the contract now, they warn them that if he doesn’t do something the contract will remain open and will have to deal with worse foes down the road. Eight offers to give him their finger as “proof”, but the party decides they have some time to work out a plan as Regi will need to accompany them for a while before they can leave the desert.
The party, plus Regi, set up camp for the evening. Eight uses some magic to repair most of the damage to the cart before getting instructions on sleeping from Regi. Seeing their excitement to try it out, the rest of the group divides into pairs for watch. Trix and Regi take the first watch, and use the time to catch up on what they’ve been up to since they parted ways. While overall the conversation is pleasant, Trix brings up an uncomfortable and potentially problematic flaw in Eight’s plan to give up a finger.

After gathering some new supplies, the group begins their trek into the desert. The day is spent following the mountain range, each member of the party prodding Faerlin for details on how to find the hideout. Eventually Faerlin caves, offering up a landmark to look for. Just as they decide to set up camp, the wind begins to blow and a shadow above them blocks out the sun.
The shadow is caused by a large metal airship and Trix notices the symbol on the ship belongs to the Bloodbeards, a guild that once rivaled their own Onyx Serpent. A voice calls out, asking if they’re coming from Sparrow’s Landing. Though Eight confirms this is accurate, Rou and Trix tell them to make a run for it. Despite their best efforts, their escape fails when the ship fires and disables the cart. The fight carries on for some time, Eight Jr making an appearance and Trix blasting the engines. However, when Eight casts a mirror image spell and several images of Trix appear around the cart, the pilot’s response leaves everyone surprised.

As the fire rages at the outpost, Rou and Trix take a moment to catch Eight up with what they’ve missed the last week or so. It quickly becomes apparent that, aside from a memory gap, Eight now also is having trouble functioning despite their assurance that they feel fine. Trix comes clean about their history with the Emperor, the group’s most recent encounter with The Dragon, and what they did to try and bring Eight back.
When they rejoin the group, it’s obvious to Indy & Co that Eight is no longer Amara, which prompts Rou and Trix to come clean about what they know regarding their friend’s situation. Sierra is less than pleased and is adamant that they can’t help the trio now, especially with their equipment and food stores gone. Dassana proposes that perhaps they can keep in touch and regroup when the party is ready to go rescue the children, as they still wish to help with that.
Once the fire dies down, the group sifts through the ash and rubble hoping to find some of their equipment. They’re able to reclaim some of their goods, but their cash and food stores are lost. When they’re ready to part ways, Trix notices Faerlin watching them. They ask them to tag along and, as is their duty, Faerlin agrees.

The group has cleared the blaze that rages within the cavern. The remaining guards are running around trying to salvage what they can in the enclosed outer areas, but it’s only a matter of time before that goes up in flames as well. The group stops in the middle of the chaos to try and bring Eight back to consciousness, unaware of whose personality might arise. As Trix tries to open the paneling, Rou pushes them away at first. Trix pushes forward and begins to examine Eight’s darkwood core. They eventually find a series of strange grooves but realize they have no tools.
Sierra volunteers to go looking for the cart and their equipment, dragging Indy with her, leaving Rou and Trix to have a moment of privacy. As the pair slowly drag the construct’s body along in the search for their belongings, Trix comes clean with their true identity. The conversation is tense, Rou revealing hurt and betrayal at Trix’s decision to keep their secret from their friends.
The cart is found but the group finds that it has been ransacked, some of their cash and food stores gone along with some minor equipment pieces. As the fire begins to climb along the dry wood fence toward them, Sierra encourages everyone to leave and examine their belongings later. They heed her warnings, Rou driving the cart as Trix fiddles with the mechanisms on Eight’s form.

Rou and Anaan make their way through the outpost toward the source of the scream. They come upon the sight of Trix on a dais with the Emperor and The Dragon, the rest of the party standing in front of a pit and surrounded by guards. Anaan sneaks up to the dais as The Dragon summons a staff. The Dragon tells Trix to pay attention to what they do to traitors. Even after the hit she has taken, Amara still manages a snide comment in the Emperor’s direction.
The Dragon casts a spell, suffocating Amara until their form drops to the ground. Seeing this, Rou rushes up to the crowd and stands over Amara’s limp form. Trix uses the distraction to shoot an arrow at the pit, the blast from the rune forcing dust into the air and obscuring Rou and the others. As a fight breaks out, The Dragon lashes out to catch Trix at the throat, but his attempt is thwarted when Anaan cuts off his arm. When The Dragon and Emperor flee, the party uses the chaos to escape the outpost.

Trix is forced to change into more elegant clothing more befitting their station before having a private meeting with the Emperor. He asks about their journey, how they arrived at the outpost and what they desire from this meeting. Seemingly satisfied with Trix’s answers, the Emperor and The Dragon escort Trix to a small amphitheater to deal with some trespassers.
Back in the cells, the rest of the party learns that Anaan’s companions have already been executed. They were caught due to an ill-timed hand gesture change. Before they can learn more, Amara is retrieved by two guards with a menacing prod-like instrument. Rou fakes a heart attack but the guards ignore him. One by one the others are collected, until finally Rou and Anaan are left. When Rou’s cell opens he takes the opportunity to take the guards down by shifting into his wolf form. As he exits the holding area, he hears a loud and painful scream in the distance.

Locked in cells, Amara and Rou quickly realize the mysterious prisoner is one of the Sultan’s spies. Their equipment and weapons have been confiscated, although the contents of Amara’s gauntlets have been spared. She takes one of the tools out and attempts to pick the lock, but fails. Dassana offers to do the same with one of her hairpins but also finds she is unable to free herself. When the spy, named Anaan, shares that only one guard comes down for feeding time, the group hatches a plan to attack the guard, grab the keys and escape.
Meanwhile, Trix continues to clean under Faerlin’s watchful gaze. When Trix asks how long he plans to stay, Faerlin admits they’re surprised Trix didn’t already know. He shares that “The Dragon” often visits all the locations to make sure everything is as it should be and things are progressing according to plan. Dawn arrives and Faerlin escorts to the entryway to greet “The Dragon” and his retinue. What Trix sees before them is an Adar-Kai with regal bearing, a human with slightly yellowed skin and balding pate, surrounded by more than a dozen armed guards.

While Trix infiltrates the outpost and scouts it out, the group is left to await their return in an alcove hidden from view. At first they’re happy enough to sit it out and converse, but as time passes they become worried they’re waiting too long. Rou suggests they start implementing the next steps and offers up the uniforms they’ve stashed away. While they’re changing, they are ambushed by nearly two dozen outpost guards. Although Amara is ready to fight, Dassana subtly reminds her of the plan by raising her hands in submission. The rest of the party follows suit and are led into the outpost.
Meanwhile, Trix’s encounter with the servant Adar-Kai gives them an opening for infiltration. Mistaken for an expected servant who has yet to arrive, they play along and give the false name Lorsanan. They are given a bath, fresh attire appropriate to their station and instructions to clean in preparation for “The Dragon’s” arrival. As they continue the act, they take the opportunity to snoop around, completely unaware the rest of their party has been captured.

Amara and Sierra chase after the mysterious flying creature. As they get closer, they find it has leathery wings, a rounded body and seems to be quite large. Amara touches the gem on their chest and sends out a lightning spell. The struck creature falls to the ground, and Sierra is immediately disturbed by the glass globe that makes up its face. She shatters it with her warhammer and insists they must pack and leave immediately.
Once they’re far enough away, Sierra reveals that the creature is used for spying by the same group that makes the mechanical beasts. Over the next several days, she shares more about her past entanglements with the Order of Tannyth and what she knows of them. Eventually, the group arrives at the outpost at the base of the Cragsward Mountains. They formulate a plan, of which the first step involves Trix sneaking in to scope out the interior. Unfortunately, Trix’s luck runs out when they decide to investigate the largest building.
