Robots From Tomorrow!

Dark Horse Month continues at Multiversity and here on the show, as the lads welcome writer Samuel Teer to the underground recording studio for some talk about his debut Dark Horse OGN “VEDA: Assembly Required” with Hyeondo Park and Kelly Fitzpatrick. The story of a young orphan girl growing up in an automated factory drew inspiration from sources as varied as Pixar and Kipling’s “The Jungle Book”, but this comic for all ages certainly brings its own virtues to bear. Teer talks about the process of getting the book to Dark Horse and what happened after its own assembly. What's it like for a first-time writer to have their debut OGN released by a major publisher? What went right...or wrong? Gremlins feature prominently in “VEDA” the story, but did Teer and company escape their shenanigans completely? Find out all that and more on this week’s episode!

Another Previews catalog showed up on their doorsteps, so it's time to gaze into the tomorrow of August 2016 and see what catches Mike and Greg's fancy. This month racks up quite the tab, with several big ticket items being offered. Plus, the running order gets switched up a little this month, with Dark Horse getting the pole position in honor of their 30th anniversary, but things jump from there back to the Green section and continue as per usual. Usagi Yojimbo Gallery Edition volume 2! Chris Samnee Daredevil Artist Edition! The debut of the Moebius Library! More DC Rebirths! Fantagraphics telling it like it was! Re*Pro*Duct - again for the first time! All that, plus some Tomm Coker love in time for his new Image series with Jonathan Hickman, a frank talk about Frank Cho, which new Image series feels like a box being checked, who knows what art book lurks on the pull-list of one of the hosts (The Shadow knows!), the fastest Marvel rundown ever(?), and much more!

The lads celebrate 300 episodes by finally talking about a creator never before mentioned on the show: Mike Mignola! All kidding aside, this episode finds Mike & Greg in immediate post-"Hellboy in Hell" #10 territory, as the final issue hit stands mere hours before the tape started rolling. After 23 years and 66 issues in various iterations, Mignola brings his story of a demon raised as a man to a close, possibly forever. Mike & Greg talk about not only what happens in the last installment, but preface that deep-dive with a healthy back&forth of Mignola's work & career in general. What is it about his work that invites so much discussion? How have the years honed the Mignola/Stewart collaboration? When did Hellboy first zig where every one of his imitators zag, and which direction did that point to Mignola's creative voice going? All that and more, plus Greg's final answer on the "curve" Mignola vs "straight" Mignola debate, as Robots From Tomorrow celebrates its 300th episode!

For today's episode Mike is joined by cartoonist Rich Tommaso to talk about his recently concluded series "Dark Corridor" as well as the forthcoming "She Wolf," both from the folks at Image Comics. The discussion kicks off with a little bit about Rich's approach to his art and his shift between the two series. And, of course, there's a little bit of dipping into Rich's back catalog as the discussion turns to creative inspiration, self-publishing, finding his way to Image, and a whole lot more. The complete collection of "Dark Corridor" and "She Wolf" #1 will both be available on June 22nd.
