Rock Chalk Podcast

It was an up-and-down week for both of the basketball teams at Kansas, as both the mean and the women split games in conference play. Andy and Brendan break it all down, starting with the difficult stretch that the women just completed and how their dominant win over TCU bodes for the rest of the conference season. Then they talk about the makeup of the men's team and what the biggest takeaway was from a 3-day stretch with two games that were polar opposites of each other.

Talk about ugly. The Kansas Jayhawks played ugly games on both the men's and women's side in foul-filled contests, with mixed results. Andy and Kyle are here to talk about it all. First, they look at the women's near-comeback against Baylor and how important this weekend's Texas game is. Then they break down an ugly game against Kansas State that was inexplicably put on ESPN+ with the #1 broadcasting team on ESPN. Plus a look ahead to Iowa State and the rest of the Big 12 conference race.

After a successful stint in the Big 12 SEC Challenge, the Kansas Jayhawks jump right back into conference play with the second edition of the Sunflower Showdown. To help break it down, Andy is joined by Scott McFarland of the Boscoe's Boys podcast.

They talk about memories from the ten-year run of the Big 12 SEC Challenge and what they hope to see from a new event. Then they look at the conference race and what it will take to get form some definitive thoughts. They look into the matchup between Kansas and Kansas State and how the teams will approach this game. And finally, they look at what the overall impact this particular game will have on the race for the rest of the season.

The Kansas Jayhawks are in the midst of a three-game losing streak, something that is very rare for a Bill Self team. But Andy and Brendan dive in to tell you why this isn't as dire of a situation as you might expect.

There is a fairly straightforward way to get the results turned around, some of which has already started. Which players are most important to a turn-around? How difficult is the Big 12, and how does that open opportunities?

Plus, they discuss how the game against Kentucky might actually be a break for the Jayhawks, something that seemed ludicrous coming into the season.

The Big 12 got even crazier this week, as the Kansas Jayhawks men's team lost in overtime to the Kansas State Wildcats to drop into a tie for first in the conference, and the women's team completely turned on a dime at halftime for a huge comeback victory. But this weekend has two more big tests, and Andy is joined by two guests to cover both of them.

Up first is Jamie Steyer-Johnson, joining the show to break down the Iowa State Cyclones women's team ahead of the matchup in Ames. They dive into how different this Iowa State team looks after injuries and how they will look to match up against the Jayhawks.

After the break, Melissa Treibwasser of Frogs Today returns to the show to break down the TCU Horned Frogs. What happened against West Virginia? Who is going to step up to help Mike Miles? Which random player is going to look like a superstar?

The Kansas Jayhawks survived yet again to remain undefeated in the conference, and Andy and Kyle recap the action from the last week. What worked well against Iowa State and Oklahoma, and what will the next few weeks look like for this team. Then they look through the performances for the Kansas women and why you shouldn't necessarily be worried about their recent results.

Finally, they take a look at the Kansas State Wildcats. What has gone into their hot start? Who is likely to be the biggest threat on Tuesday? How will Kansas react to the atmosphere in Manhattan?

It's a battle of the unbeatens on the men's side of the conference as the Kansas Jayhawks host the Iowa State Cyclones in Lawrence for first place. To help preview that matchup, Andy is joined by Levi Stevenson of Wide Right & Natty Lite. They look at how the Cyclones have been able to exceed expectations, how insane the Big 12 conference has been and still will be, and what to expect tomorrow.

But before that, Andy runs through some recent results, as women's basketball fell to the Texas Longhorns, and Oklahoma faltered down the stretch for an epic comeback on the men's side. Plus, a quick look at the upcoming road game against Oklahoma in Norman for Coach Brandon Schneider's squad.

Before we get too far into conference play, we need to talk about this conference. The Big 12 is widely regarded as one of the best (if not THE best) college basketball conferences, and that holds true on both the men's and women's sides. So to break down these conference races and the relative strengths of these teams, Andy brings in some guests who know these conference lineups inside and out.

First up is Jamie Steyer-Johnson to look at the women's side of the conference. They look at Baylor's great start, the unfortunate impacts of injuries, and which teams can score the most upsets. Plus what does Kansas need to do to stay in the race?

After the break Robbie Triano of Sirius XM's Big 12 Radio and host of the Midwest Madness podcast joins the show to break down a wild men's side of the conference. Recording right after the games on Tuesday night, they break down the surprising starts for Kansas State and Iowa State, how to think about the Baylor start, and which team actually seems most likely to finish last. Plus, could all 10 teams actually make the NCAA Tournament?

It's been a packed week with 4 total wins for Kansas Basketball, and Andy is here to recap it all. But he has to do it quickly because the show is also packed with TWO guests. First, Andy talks about the highlights of the Jayhawk Men's victories over Oklahoma State and Texas Tech, then he moves to the highlights of the Jayhawk Women's victories over the same schools.

From there, he is joined by resident Big 12 Women's expert Jamie Steyer-Johnson of the Ten12 Podcast to break down the Baylor Bears ahead of their ranked matchup with the Kansas women on Saturday in Allen Fieldhouse. What makes this Baylor team different than others we are used to seeing? Does Kansas actually have the advantage in this matchup? And what do we expect to see?

After the break, Brandon Phoenix of the Raspy Voice Kids joins the show to preview West Virginia ahead of another big matchup for the men. They talk about the strength of the conference, how different this West Virginia team is for Bob Huggins and just how important this game is.

The Kansas Jayhawks staged a huge comeback and nearly pulled off a victory in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl against the Arkansas Razorbacks, and Andy is joined by Kyle to recap all of it. They talk about the very bad first half, the incredible comeback, a performance to remember from Jalon Daniels, and then make sure to point out how Jason Bean is being unfairly maligned.

It's an episode so full that they barely have time to talk about the beginning of conference play for both the men's and women's basketball teams, but they squeeze in a quick preview.
