Rock Chalk Podcast

It was a mixed bag for the Kansas Jayhawks this last week, with the football team dropping a tough game down in Lubbock after falling behind early on the road again, but the men's basketball team defeating Duke in the Champions Classic on Tuesday.

Andy and Kyle break down everything from both games. In football, the Jayhawks couldn't stop anything on the ground for the majority of the game, and the offense couldn't do enough to complete a late comeback. And for the basketball team, Jalen Wilson showed just how improved he became over the summer and that he can take the team on his shoulders when needed. But that's not all for those games, as they hit on multiple less impactful storylines with each team that may resurface later this season.

Coach Brandon Schneider and the Kansas Jayhawks are coming off of the biggest turnaround season in program history, with almost every significant contributor returning from that team to try and build on that season. That warrants a proper season preview, so Andy was joined by Steven Davis, the play-by-play voice of the women's basketball team on the Jayhawk Radio Network, to break down the expectations for the season, the mood around the program, and the squad that will take the court.

They dive into the current feelings around the team, and the internal and external expectations for this team. They also run through the highlights of the schedule and hit on all the main contributors and players expected to step into roles left empty by departing players.

The Kansas Jayhawks had the best weekend possible, with the football team defeating the Oklahoma State Cowboys to become bowl eligible for the first time since the 2008-09 season. Then on Monday, the basketball team got the best freshman debut in over a decade in a dominant victory.

Andy and Kyle break down everything from both games. In football, the Jayhawks got a spectacular performance from Devin Neal and Jason Bean, but there were plenty of other players who stood out. And for the basketball team, Gradey Dick dominated the storylines and stat sheet, but Bobby Pettiford turned in a nice performance, and Jalen Wilson did some of everything. Plus, a couple of brief looks ahead for upcoming games against Texas Tech in football and Duke in basketball.

The bye week comes at the perfect time, as the Kansas Jayhawks need some rest to get the roster ready to compete on the football field again to finish up the season. But it also is perfect for the podcast, as the Kansas Basketball season is getting ready to start. And that means it is time for our annual Kansas Basketball preseason episode, where we dive deep into everything that has happened in the offseason, what we expect the roster and rotations to look like, identify big stretches of the schedule and talk about our thoughts on the Big 12 as a whole this season.

Andy and Brendan break down everything you need to now about Kansas basketball before the games tip off, including how big the transfer of Kevin McCullar was, which post players have the best chance of breaking out, and where we expect Kansas to finish in the conference standings.

Up first, Kansas took a loss to the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman, and there were some very big lessons learned. They look at the fight of the team, the attitude surrounding the program, and what they now know about them after that loss. Plus, there is a very quick look ahead to Baylor.

Then, they reset on Kansas Basketball, talking about how this season will try to live up to last season. This includes some comparisons to previous years, a discussion about Bill Self and how he builds teams, and then a look at the Women's Basketball program as well.
