Rock Chalk Podcast

Today's episode was supposed to just be a celebration of the beginning of the football season and some quick hits on what to expect, but the NCAA and ESPN/FOX had other ideas. Today, Andy is joined by Brendan Dzwierzynski of 580 Sports Talk to recap all the news before looking ahead to the excitement of the season opener.

They start with the news that ESPN and FOX have agreed to start discussions for a possible extension/refresh of the Big 12 media rights agreement. That includes both why this is notable and also the impact of Brett Yormark as the new Big 12 Commissioner. Then they look at the news from the NCAA that the IARP is officially being retired in 2023. From there, they jump into what they are looking for this weekend before running through some picks.

Game week is officially here, which means it is time to get a final preview of the season for the Kansas Jayhawks before we start taking a look at individual games. To help with that, Andy welcomes Derek Johnson, host of both Rock Chalk Sports Talk on KLWN in Lawrence and the Locked on Jayhawks podcast.

They start by looking at the most impactful changes for the Jayhawks in the offseason, before diving into the transformation on defense that was achieved through the transfer portal. They also look at the part of the offense that has the most potential for improvement before looking through the schedule and giving some season predictions.

The Opponent Preview series concludes with a sneak peek at the season finale against the Kansas State Wildcats. Today, Andy is joined by Scott of the Boscoe's Boys Podcast.

They start by looking at what happened in the offseason to change the opinions on this team so drastically, including the addition of a brand new quarterback in Adrian Martinez. The reviews are mixed on Martinez, so Andy and Scott explore what will be different for him at Kansas State before looking at the rest of the offense.

After the first break, they jump into the defense, trying to identify where the team is expected to take a leap forward as well as the potential holes in the team for that side of the ball. Finally, they run through the schedule and get a prediction on the final record for the season.

After the second break, Andy gives some updates on the Kansas wide receiver room before introducing the newest sponsor here on the podcast: PrizePicks.

We are back to two episodes a week as we ramp up for the start of the college football season. Andy starts off this episode solo, doing a quick recap of fall camp action before hitting up several stories from around the athletic department. Then, Parker Fleming of CFB Graphs and the BetUS CFB show joins the podcast to talk about both his metric system and the use of advanced stats in general.

It's a great primer on what advanced stats are trying to do, but equally important is the discussion about what you should NOT try to do with the various analytics that are floating out there.

Finally, they look at the defensive expectations before talking about predictions for the season.

The Opponent Preview series rolls on as we look at the Week 11 matchup against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Today, Andy is joined by Albie Shore of the Tortillas and Takes Podcast.

They start by looking at the feeling around Lubbock after last year's firing of Matt Wells and the hiring of Joey McGuire. How do you set expectations for this team?

We fly around the offense, looking at the QB battle, the top-heavy running back room, and the full but unproven receivers and lineman.

From there, we jump to the defense, which has long been a deficiency for this program. How much improvement can we expect?

Finally, we look through a fairly difficult schedule. What are realistic expectations for Tech fans to have this year?

We continue our Opponent Preview series with the Week 10 matchup against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Today, Andy is joined by Phillip Slavin of the Ten12 Network. They start by looking at the best part of last season, whether Spencer Sanders is actually the best quarterback in the conference, and what the Cowboys are looking to do on the offense. Then they look to the defense, which is replacing both the coordinator and large parts of the production from last season. Finally, they wrap up by looking for potential traps in the schedule.

We continue our Opponent Preview series with the Week 6 matchup against the TCU Horned Frogs. Today, Andy is joined by Melissa Triebwasser of Frogs Today, right after the end of Big 12 Media Days. They start by talking about surprises from the event, how weird it is to have someone other than Gary Patterson leading the team, and then dive into what to expect from this offense. Plus, how different will the defense look, and why does the schedule always look so nasty for the Horned Frogs?
