Part 2
Ian MacKaye is a widely known musician, whose music (specifically his song, Straight Edge), played a highly influential role in the early 1980’s Punk Rock and Hardcore scene.
He is known for the band's Minor Threat, The Teen Idles, and later down the road a band more in the alternative mainstream, Fugazi. He is also Co-Founder of Dischord Records located in Washington DC.
Nora and Ian, (Minor Threat is one of Nora’s fav bands growing up) sit down for an entertaining phone discussion on:
- Nora intro: How Punk Rock as a philosophy influenced her character development
- Ian being himself and just wanting to create music
- Growing up and not following what others were doing
- How he feels Straight Edge was not a movement he was trying to create, he was just being himself
- His belief in peace, love, and unity
- His belief public venues should be open for teens to enjoy as well
- “Punk to me means the free space.”
- “When we’re born, that’s pure.”
“In Jimi Hendrix’s song, If 6 was 9 he said:
I’ve got my own life to live,
I’m the one that’s going to die,
When it’s time for me to die,
So let me live my life the way I want to.”
