A long time ago, in a podcast far far away we discuss, in our opinion, one of the best Star War Films ever made in Episode 5, Empire Strikes Back. A continuation from A New Hope we follow as the rebel alliance has won the battle, but not the war. Luke Skywalker begins his training to fully become a Jedi warrior all while Darth Vader looks to end the rebel alliance and perhaps convince young Skywalker to join him. Listen as we discuss another Fa-Lala-la-film that we tell we love, and Star Wars replies, I know
A slave turned bounty hunter, A bounty hunter turned mentor and friend, A plantation owner holding all the cards against them. Today we discuss another fantastic Tarintino film as Jamie Foxx stars as Django, a man on a mission to save his wife from the owner of one of the most infamous plantations of the south, Candyland. A classic western story with a bit of Tarintino flair, Django slowly builds into the unstoppable force willing to do anything to free his wife. A genius scheme, old fashion shoot outs, and some great catchphrases proving that this is his world, and in his world, sometimes you need to get dirty.
In the first edition of Fa-Lala-la-films, We discuss the best holiday movie ever made, Die Hard. The film that really broke Bruce Willis into the action world of cinema follows him as a young New York cop traveling to visit his wife for a Christmas party in Los Angeles. Quickly becoming a fight for survival as terrorists invade the building, John Mclain is the only one who can save everyone inside. So sit back, have a few drinks, have a few laughs and listen to us talk barefoot just as John would have wanted.
Eight residents are held up in an apartment buildings bomb shelter after an attack on the city. As their food and supplies run low, the dynamic begins to switch rapidly. A pretty much non-stop psychological thriller that shows you what humanity will do to itself when the world around them ends. Look, we're going to be honest over here at the HQ, this is not a film for everyone. A Zach film indeed and pure torture for Frank, there is definitely a divide among us on this one.
Nightcrawler is a thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling - where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.
We don't have enough positive things to say about S. Craig Zahler's debut feature film. A film released in 2015 that embodies the classic 1960's western feel. Zahler takes a story that we have seen a million times in westerns flips it on its head. The old west is dying, and an elderly sheriff and his misfit posse set out to rescue their town's doctor. The twist? Well, it just so happens that the people that took them are savage cannibalistic cave dwellers. We're telling you, if you like a good western film, and also love horror, you don't want to miss this one.
What if the DNA of all life in an area was being mutated? On the surface, Annihilation is a story about a group of scienctist trying to understand a strange phenomenon. They venture into an otherworldly border called "The Shimmer". A beautiful alien world some truly horrific mutations. Going below the surface you quickly realize that Annihilation is a film all about three major themes. Duplication, Mutation, and Self-Destruction. "When dealing with aliens, we often make them like us in some way. Maybe they want to eat us, or maybe they want our water, our resources. But these are all sorts of human concerns.." Annihilation turns this stereotypical storyline on its head and creates an alien with no motivation at all. And truthfully, we find that even more terrifying.
Early 18th century, England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving. A frail Queen Anne occupies the throne and her close friend, Lady Sarah governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne's ill health. When a new servant Abigal arrives, her charm endears the Queen to Sarah and a fight ensues to who can become the Queen's favourite. Yorgos Lanthimos comes through with his most realistic film, set in actual reality. A true master of his craft, The Favourite shows us that Lanthimos is one of the most consistent directors working today. Another masterpiece, more deep metaphors, and although a funny film, when the credits roll you are left with this feeling of true deep sadness.
How far are you willing to go for the "good life"? In Bong Joon-Ho's newest film, that question is answered, and then some! A penniless family stumbles on an opportunity to finally make some decent cash. One by one they each find there way into one wealthy families home, each in their own creative way. What starts off as a funny, clever scheme, quickly turns into a horrific nightmare that leaves you white knuckle till the end. A brilliant film that is never predictable and impeccably shot. Joon-Ho leaves you with one simple question to answer. How does one get rid of a parasite?
