A man with a troubled past and a horrible addiction stumbles upon a man who is almost revered as a God to some and a Cult leader to others. Paul Thomas Anderson once again showcases what a masterful(no pun intended) storyteller he is as Lancaster Dodd, a Philosopher, takes in Freddie Quill, a war veteran with PTSD, attempting to teach him about his religion which ultimately leads to more of an obsession rather than anything else. An intriguing film that will have you wondering, "are they making it up as they go along?"
When a far off planet loses its water supply a traveler from another world comes to visit in plain sight. In the 1976 film, David Bowie stars as an alien coming to earth in hopes of transferring water back to his dying planet and family. While here, he starts a successful business and also finds love in an unconventional way. An odd, art-house style film that at times is hard to digest, although, finds its way as a cult classic. Once again though, it seems like Zach is 0/3 with picks that Frank enjoys, however, he will not go down without a fight.
In the inaugural 50th episode, Zach and Frank decide to take part in a bank heist as we discuss Spike Lee's Inside Man. A clever take on a bank heist film filled with twists and turns, Denzel Washington plays a detective tasked with trying to negotiate with the robbers and rescue the hostages. Attempting to do so, we learn a much darker meaning behind the bank itself and its owner, a tense realization, and a bank robber who may just be smarter then he leads on.
What if all of your life you were brought up to believe that you were a normal human, only to then realize that you are actually a clone. On top of this, designed only to donate vital organs to people who need them. In this sci-fi style romance film, we follow three clones merely trying to live their lives while still bound to their destiny. A heartfelt film that still has quite a few plot holes, Never let me go shows you that they were not shown to see inside of their souls, but rather to see if they have souls at all.
How far would you be willing to save your child? Would you be willing to do whatever it takes? Denzel Washington plays John Quincy Archibald, a man struggling to raise the money to save his son after finding out he has weeks to live if unable to receive a heart transplant. A film that focuses on health care in America, and how people struggle with covering basic health costs, John Q gives a heartfelt story that proves if you fight for what you believe in, you can make anything possible.
On the happiest day of her night, Justine struggles to keep everything together as her severe depression quickly takes control of her wedding. At the same time the planet known as "melancholia" appears to be on a collision course to earth. In a film that discusses more so the terrifying aspect of how crippling depression can be, the planet on its way seems like an afterthought. Nevertheless, this is the first film we didn't enjoy collectively, but we still have a damn good conversation about it!
In a groundbreaking film for its time, Jack Nicholson stars as Randle McMurphy, a man brought to a mental institute for evaluation on whether or not he will be sent to prison or remain there. A film with heartwarming comedy still somehow manages to pull on your heartstrings with gut-wrenching drama and real-life struggles. A loveable cast banding together at the end, living up to the line in the film "at least I tried, didn't I?
In the world of Gods and Demons, Industrialization and the wilderness, Myths and reality, A prince looks to rid himself of an evil curse. While doing so he comes across a princess of Wolves and the Forest, who looks to help him save the gods and stop the destruction of the wilderness around them, ultimately attempting to save him as well. Needless to say, Frank is still learning to love anime while Zach continues to push for more.
One is a struggling musician, the other is a struggling actress, together they fall in love over the common drive and determination of one another. In the 2016 oscar-winning film Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone lead in a new age spin on a classic romance film. A musical performance with a 50's vibe to it, listen as we discuss the film and also differ on what a musical really is...which Zach argues it is not.
