In this weeks episode Vonia covers one of her favorite Rom Coms of all time, Overboard! Seriously she can recite this movie from start to finish. Although we know that the plot is WILDLY problematic we still can’t help but enjoy the slapstick comedy and smoldering chemistry between Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. Not to mention the endless quotable moments Joanna Stayton (Goldie) provides before amnesia strikes. Then Averyn shares the heart wrenching true crime story of Tom and Jackie Hawks. The Hawks were a retired couple who decided, after two years spent sailing the seas, to sell their yacht and get a place close to their new grandson. They could never have known the horror that would befall them when they gave an interested buyer a test drive.

The Lost City + Nancy Crampton-Brophy = The Lost City of Romance Novelists

In this weeks episode Averyn and Vonia share a trip to the movies AND a brand new LOGO! Vonia covers, OUT IN THEATERS NOW, The Lost City! Listen... we know a big screen and popcorn and nachos with all the jalapeños inevitability enhance the viewing experience but we give this movie all the ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️! It’s hilarious and charming and Channing Tatum plays Fabio (basically) so what more can you ask for… how about Sandra Bullock and a hilarious cameo from Brad Pitt. Did we mention we LOVED this movie? Then Averyn tells the true story of suspense romance novelist, Nancy Crampton-Brophy. Nancy is awaiting trial (it should start in a few weeks) for the murder of her husband Daniel. One of the biggest pieces of evidence against her is a 2011 blog post she authored titled “How to Murder your Husband.” It is BONKERS!

In this weeks miniature episode Averyn and Vonia both share stories of bills with shocking price tags and adventures they had with out of town company. Don’t you fret there’s also the true crime of the day calendar five part story of Germanwings Flight 9525 to cover all of your true crime needs.

Leap Year + Aileen Wuornos = Leap Year Killer

In this weeks episode Vonia covers, the only good because of Matthew Goode, Leap Year. This rom com is clunky but remains utterly watchable due to its gorgeous leading man and a bar full of charming old blokes. There’s an old Irish tradition that every leap year on February 29th it’s cool for a woman to propose to her fellow (🤮🤮🤮🤮) so Anna (Amy Adams) whose boyfriend just so happens to be in Dublin on Leap Day decides she’s tired of waiting around for a proposal and hops on a plane. Bad weather threatens to derail her plan until hunky Inn Keeper, Declan (Matthew Goode), agrees to help her get to Dublin in time to propose. They encounter all kinds of hiccups, including the destruction of another couples wedding, on their journey but at the end of the film there is indeed a marriage proposal. Then Averyn shares the true story of serial killer, Aileen Wuornos, whose difficult and painful life all began on Leap Day February 29th 1956.

Once + Sid & Nancy = Once Vicious

In this weeks episode Vonia covers the wonderfully romantic musical movie, Once. This movie is a love story told through the songs two struggling artists write together for a demo. It’s lovely and bittersweet and did we mention the MUSIC?? This is an all around A+ romance.

Then Averyn pivots from sweet and folksy to rough and punk by sharing the true story of Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen. Two young drug addicts tangled up in the wild New York City punk scene. This world of music and drugs and violence would ultimately lead to the deaths of both Sid and Nancy.

In this weeks episode Vonia covers the wonderful Rom Drama, Love & Basketball! This movie gives us all the feels and is an excellent reminder to always stay true to yourself and follow your passion with everything you’ve got! Then Averyn covers our first ever feel good crime story! The true story of WNBA star Maya Moore and her pursuit of justice for a wrongfully convicted man who would ultimately win his freedom and her heart. 

The Cutting Edge + Bad Sport: Gold War = Cutting Edge Quid Pro Quo

In this weeks episode Vonia covers the oh so spectacular Sports Rom Com, The Cutting Edge! We straight up love this movie! Moira Kelly and D.B. Sweeney star as pair figure skaters going for Olympic Gold. Their seeming dislike of one another masks the simmering heat emerging between the two as they match wits on and off the ice. Watch it for the Pamchenko alone!

Then on the heels of several current Olympic scandals, Averyn covers a scandal that rocked the world of Olympic Figure Skating 20 years ago. No not the one you’re thinking of 😂 In 2002, after their clearly superior performance, Canadian pair Jamie Salé and David Pelletier came in 2nd to Russian pair Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze. When the French judge admitted she had been pressured to favor the Russian pair an investigation was launched that revealed a conspiracy involving the Russian Mafia and a quid pro quo.

In this weeks episode Vonia covers the final film in our Meg and Tom trilogy, You’ve Got Mail! And this one is our favorite! Yes it’s a story about two people already in relationships who are having an emotional online affair and then turns into a tale about a big money bookstore owner catfishing the woman he’s putting out of business but it’s just so gosh darn charming! Tom and Megs chemistry is off the charts in this one and the whimsical world Nora Ephron created all just reel you in like, I guess you could say, a catfish. Then Averyn shares the incredible story that makes up the wildly popular podcast, Sweet Bobby. This is perhaps the craziest and cruelest story of catfishing we have ever come across! 

In this weeks episode Vonia tackles the second film in our Tom and Meg trilogy, Sleepless in Seattle. As far as Rom Coms go this was the gold standard in 1990s romantic comedy. However, in spite of Toms handsome sorrow and Megs manic charm, at its core this movie is about a woman who strings along her fiancé while simultaneously using her journalistic skills to stalk a grieving widower and his son. Do they pull it off… we are going with YES! As creepy as the premise is when you break it down this is after all a movie about wanting to be in love in a movie. It’s a fantasy people! Tom and Megs chemistry doesn’t merit a grade as the two spend less than 2 minutes on screen together. Averyn then follows up with the true story of Maria Marchese. Maria stalked her ex boyfriend’s psychiatrist, Dr. Jan Falkowski and his fiancé Debbie Pemberton to such an extreme that when she was finally convicted the court handed down one of the harshest sentences for stalking in British history.

Joe Versus the Volcano + Christopher Dunstch = Joe Versus Dr. Death

In this weeks episode we begin our journey covering the King and Queen of Rom Coms, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan! Vonia starts at the very beginning with Joe Versus the Volcano. This movie is quirky and strange and charming and not like any other movie we’ve seen before and we totally recommend it! Tom and Meg(and Meg and Meg) get an A+ for chemistry from us. Then Averyn shares the story of Dr. Dunstch aka Dr. Death, the first doctor in Texas to be charged of violent crimes committed in his operating room.
