Man Lisa Kleypas can write a book!! We had such fun following Evie's journey from stuttering wallflower to empowered viscountess!

This book was fun because it started right in the action of Evie proposing a marriage of convenience to Sebastian. We both didn't read book 2, so we only heard about his abduction of her friends, so we were fine with the explanation of how everything shook out. 

Friends, we had so many FUN tangents while recording this. This is Shani's first episode back in LA (even though we were in separate places) and we couldn't have been more excited! And I think it showed.

As you all may remember, we were going to do book 3 of this series but realized that one of us wouldn't know what was going to happen because they really are not standalones. So we decided to go back to the beginning with book 1!

We start with Devil and Felicity and get a lot of backstory about the Barenuckle Bastards and the world. One thing we didn't realize is that Felicity is featured in one of the other MacLean series and the Bastards are mentioned.  Thankfully that didn't  affect us too much!

Happy 1 year anniversary from launch for us!! 

Now on to the book! 

Vanessa Riley came recommended to us by a lot of our friends (maybe even you!) on the old Instagram. But a different book, so maybe, that book would have had a little more open doors, and a little less plot lines, but this book was not that for us. 

This book was very heavy on the praying to God and trusting in God. Each character was doing this at least once per chapter, so if that isn't your thing, this book isn't for you.  As Shani says, "I wanna do things that are ungodly hahahaha."

Things we talked about in this episode: 

• Gaia finding out about her mixed heritage - coming to terms with it and pride in it
• William and her meet-cute (cursing at the cliff)
• Book picked up for me when he proposed to her
• Plot was a lot! Dark secrets on both sides, attempted murders, kidnapping, multiple suitors, sister betrayal, cinderella story
• Lots of god talk
• Lots of her crying. Pull your shit together gaia (except when she tells the black servant to watch the baby)
• Where was the sex? --- the kissing scenes were good though
• The love triangle aspect

You guys there were so many people who DID NOT like one of the main plot points of this book and we thoroughly discussed all of the good, funny, corny, quirky elements of this book, as well as the few areas we were like, NO!!

AKA Who body-snatched Pilar?

The beginning of this book rocked our world. We were both sporting 5-star feelings after the initial chapters and then when they left Miami for California the whole book started to change for us. Gone was the fun, the danger, the excitement, and it was a complete 180 of Pilar’s character and priorities.

Some major points we discussed: 

The fact that Pilar is afro Latina from Cuba and that her family was a slightly shady bunch of people where everyone had a skill to help out the group. 

Love that is Pilar stealing his boat and not the standard girl stowing away on a pirate ship dressed as a boy trope. LOL 

The love at first sight is the sword fight and subsequent proposal.  

The segregated train car. 

When pilar threatens to kill the man who tried to assassinate Noah. 

We wished Pilar’s badassery was used more and that the book had a little bit more action. Pilar was essentially a fugitive and yet no one ever came after her. And she had little opportunity for her cutthroat talents.
