Ross Shumway joined UCLA Football in April of 2022. He oversees the fueling needs and nutrition optimization for all 120 UCLA Football Student-Athletes.
Shumway’s background specializes in utilizing nutrition to address the metabolic needs of football-specific athletes, including; analysis of energy balance and dietary intake, body composition, hydration status, safe supplementation, pre- peri- and post-orthopedic nutritional intervention, and physiological risk ratings. He provides education on optimal dietary practices for performance during training, competition, post-training recovery, injury/injury prevention, illness, weight management, and travel.
Prior to his hiring at UCLA, Shumway completed his dietetic internship through the University of Houston Distance Program, completing his Foodservice, Community, and Elective rotations at the University of Nebraska Athletics Department.
During his time in Lincoln, he created and operated a self-make pizza station in the Student-Athlete Dining Hall, presented a Pre/Post-Orthopedic Surgery Nutrition Protocol to the Sports Medicine Orthopedic Surgery Staff, collaborated with multiple OBGYN’s to propose research funding for an adolescent-specific, RED-S questionnaire to be administered statewide, and created a sport-specific fat-free mass index for Men’s Baseball and Women’s Soccer.
Shumway also provided staff relief for the Assistant Director of Sports Nutrition, Lisa Kopecky, for two months, managing a student workforce of over 50, training an Assistant Sports Dietitian, and acting as a preceptor for three Dietetic Interns in the University of Nebraska’s Dietetic Internship Masters Program.
Shumway worked with multiple teams at Nebraska including Women’s Soccer, Softball, Men’s Baseball, Women’s Volleyball, Men’s Basketball, and Football, but was also heavily involved in the day-to-day operations at the Student-Athlete Dining Hall.
Prior to Nebraska, Shumway had one year of combined Football internship experience in the National Football League with the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers. In these positions, he provided daily nutrition and hydration support to professional football athletes. This included weigh-ins, lifting sessions, pre/post practice meals/snacks, and pre/post-game fueling. He managed inventory including forecasting, weekly records, and supervising athlete consumption. At the Chargers, he provided on-field hydration support, and coordinated home pre/post-game fueling logistics with hotel, stadium, and catering staff for games and practices. he executed team-wide nutrition planning, increasing feeding frequency and energy intake.
Shumway is certified as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. He volunteers his personal time to hold leadership positions with the Collegiate and Professional Sports Dietitian’s Association (CPSDA) as Student Committee Co-Chair (2020-2022) and the first student member on the Research and Education Committee. He collaborates well with other Dietitians and is highly committed to developing future sports dietitians.
Shumway grew up in North Andover, Massachusetts, and received his undergraduate degree in Kinesiology from Chapman University before completing Post-Baccalaureate DPD courses through the University of Arizona. While attending Chapman, Shumway was a member of the Men’s Club Lacrosse Team. Shumway currently lives in Woodland Hills with his girlfriend Victoria and their dog Jameson.
