  • Chiiild

"Chiiild" is a Canadian experimental soul band led by singer/producer Yonatan Ayal (aka xSDTRK) and guitarist/producer "Pierre-Luc Rioux (aka PL).

Despite both hailing from Montréal, the duo didn't meet until crossing paths in the LA music scene, at a time when Yonatan was forging a career as a producer/beat-maker and PL was doing the same as a producer/writer and session guitarist for numerous artists. Once the pair decided to collaborate it took a few years for the "Chiiild" sound to emerge, first experimenting with a fully "soul" sound and then making tracks with the intention that other singers would be featured on them. Finally Yonatan had a break-through, realizing that the only way his music would not get watered down was to become a singer himself and to write about personal subjects that resonated with him.

As usual, there is a lot more to know about the background and paths "Chiiild" have taken to get here, so check out this latest episode of Roots to Grooves where Jay and Jesse also spin a selection of their favorite tracks from "Chiiild".

  • Dirty Projectors

"Dirty Projectors" started out as a solo project from founding member David Longstreth, who wrote, recorded and self-released the first two albums while he was studying music at Yale University. During his summer breaks he would go on tours throughout the USA, playing mostly in small rock clubs organized by DIY promoters who he had connected with via Myspace. It was during these early years that David would also connect with other musicians, in order to create a band and bring his albums to life on stage.

The line-up has morphed drastically over the years, encompassing over 20 different individuals, but it was the experience of putting together the live band that inspired David and his co-musicians to continue the collaborations in the studio, and since then "Dirty Projectors" have very much put together music in a collaborative sense.

Fast forward almost 20 years to 2020, and we see yet another line-up change. This time 5 full time members who were introduced to listeners by 5 separate EPs that dropped throughout 2020, together with cover artwork provided by David's brother Jake Longstreth.

  • Mitski

Born in Japan to an American father and Japanese mother, singer/songwriter "Mitski" spent her formative years living in numerous countries around the world before her family finally settled in Chicago. It was during these early years, while never fully settling in any one location, or having a consistent group of friends, that "Mitski" discovered her musical passions, by spending every free moment teaching herself how to play Piano.

After dropping out of film school to instead study music, her first two albums were completed before she graduated. With these self-released titles complete, she initiated her own solo tours, playing across the US in venues large and small, even cutting her teeth in small dive bar venues with tough crowds.

In this episode of Roots to Grooves musicians Jay Purcell and Jesse Quigley explore "Mitski's" background, her creative approaches and they spin a selection of their favorite tracks.

  • Fink

"Fink's" sound can be described as acoustic, singer/songwriter folk music with undertones of soul, jazz and electronica.

Unusually for most singer/songwriters, "Fink's" first release was actually a fully sampled trip-hop affair along the lines of DJ Shadow or The Avalanches. Titled "Fresh Produce" that album has since been eclipsed by the many albums that would follow, and which present a completely different direction versus his debut release.

"Fink's" real name is Fin Greenall. Fin was born in Cornwall and raised in the legendary music city of Bristol. Starting out as a DJ and then an electronic music producer, Fin spent most of his formative years DJ around Europe before becoming disillusioned with the scene and the art form. It wasn't until he spent some time checking out live music acts in his home city and eventually collaborating with a then unknown Amy Winehouse did he become inspired to take a more singer/songwriter approach to his music.

For the full story, including our discussion on Fin's top 10 tips for making music, tune in to this week's episode of Roots to Grooves".

  • IDLES

"We are not a punk band", is how lead singer Joe Talbot has described the sound of this Bristol band "IDLES", however we can't deny that IDLES does kind of have that punk energy when it comes to their music. Hard hitting, high energy but lyrically poignant, sarcastic and at times darkly comedic.

"IDLES" were formed in Bristol in the mid 2000's when after DJ'ing around the city a few of the members decided they wanted to create their own music. It took some time, and several line-up changes, before they finally found their sound, kicking off in 2015 with their debut EP's "Welcome" and "Meat/Meta". Since then they have released 3 full length studio albums, toured the world and remained humble. Joe says their ethos has always been to work hard and not seek gratitude, believing that if you stick to your guns, and your passions, everything will ultimately align. There is so much more to know, so we welcome you to join the conversation with Jay and Jesse and listen to some of their top "IDLES" picks. on this latest edition of Roots to Grooves".

  • Courtney Barnett

"Courtney Barnett" is a singer, songwriter, and musician from Melbourne Australia, known for her often deadpan singing style and witty lyrics.

Courtney grew up in a musical household, with both her brothers playing guitar around her. When she was just 10 years old she asked her brothers to show her some chords and eventually begged her parents to buy her a guitar and lessons. As a left-handed guitar player Courtney actually started out learning on a regular right-handed guitar with conventional stringing, this basically meant she learnt how to play guitar chords backwards, which she can still do to this day. In her early career she played with a couple of indie bands around Australia, before writing her own songs and putting out her debut EP in 2012.

As usual, there is a lot more to know about this fascinating artist. Join musicians Jay Purcell and Jesse Quigley as they discuss Courtney's work, life, career and spin some of their favorite tracks.

  • Hiatus Kaiyote

"Hiatus Kaiyote" are an Australian jazz/funk/neo soul band based out of Melbourne.

The band is led by signer/guitarist Nai Palm (aka Naomi Saalfield). After going through the trauma of losing both her parents and being separated from her siblings in her early teenage years, Nai Palm decided to move to Melbourne by herself, without knowing anyone of having a place to live. It wasn't long before she stumbled by a local park, where she witnessed and eventually learnt the art of fire dancing. During this time she also continued to write and perform solo material at local music venues. It was at one of her solo performances that the other members of "Hiatus Kaiyote" first met her. After a year of hanging out, the quartet officially formed a band and self-produced their debut full length album "Tawk Tomahawk" in 2012.

Their path since then has seen them tour the world, make new fans and connections within the industry, and put out further studio albums. In this episode Jay and Jesse discuss the bands history and spin some of their favorite tracks.
