  • Arlo Parks

"Arlo Parks" is a British singer-songwriter and poet from West London.

A relatively new artist on the scene, her debut album "Collapsed in Sunbeams" was only released in 2021, but since 2018 she has dropped sporadic singles as well as a well received EP. Arlo's music has been described as R&B, Neo Soul and even Indie Folk, due to her poetic/thoughtful lyrics and soothing voice. One of her big breakthroughs came in 2018 when upon uploading her music to BBC's "Introducing" initiative, a radio DJ passed on her tracks to the management firm "Beatnick Creative", who have since become her managers. There is a lot more to know about this rising artist. Jay and Jesse discuss her multi-ethnic background, the effect her songs have had on the public at large, and the guys spin some of their favorite tracks from Arlo's repertoire.

  • Pond

"Pond" are a psychedelic rock band from Perth, Western Australia.

Although the band official formed in 2008, their roots can be traced back to 2005, when singer Nick Albrook got together with a few friends under the name of "Electric Blue Acid Dogs". Feeling that the name was not appropriate when entering a local battle-of-the-bands competition, they renamed themselves to "Mink Mussel Creek". It was at this time they crossed paths with Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker, who would later join them as their drummer and go on to produce a number of Pond's early studio albums. Since those early days the band have gone on to tour the world and drop 9 studio albums. Join Jay and Jesse as we dive into the history of "Pond" and spin a few favorite tracks, including some early rare jam/demo recordings which also feature Kevin Parker on drums.

  • Kikagaku Moyo

"Kikagaku Moyo" are a psychedelic Japanese rock band originally from Tokyo.

The band started out in 2012, living all together in a house in Tokyo and busking outside train stations when they weren't working their day jobs or jamming in the studio. It wasn't long before they wrote and recorded their self-titled debut album, which came together in less than a week. After performing many "pay-to-play" gigs in the heart of Tokyo, they set their sights on Melbourne, Australia, as a place they thought would appreciate their music and live shows. Their trips outside Japan set them on a path with a career in music. Now with half the members based in Amsterdam, and half in Tokyo, "Kikagaku Moyo" have their own independent record label, allowing them to not only put out their own music, but also to champion other underground sounds coming out of their home country. Come with us as Jay and Jesse explore the sounds and approaches of "Kikagaku Moyo".

  • Alfa Mist

"Alfa Mist" is a British Jazz pianist, producer and rapper based in London.

Growing up in the London borough of Newham to a single immigrant mother, Alfa's love of music originally led him to start producing beats in the vein of J Dilla. His curiosity in how hip-hop found it's roots led him to discover the original Jazz records that these producers were sampling from. His discovery of old jazz evolved into Alfa wanting to self-teach himself piano at the age of 17, so that he could bring the chords and harmonies to life in his own compositions. Alfa has gone on to release multiple albums and EP's, often featuring conversations with his brothers and sisters on themes of mental health and self-image. As usual, there is much more to know. Jay and Jesse dive into Alfa's history, his career, and spin a few of their favorite tracks.

  • Snarky Puppy

"Snarky Puppy" are an American instrumental ensemble led by bassist Michael League.

The group's formation can be traced back to 2004, after Micheal League's second year at the University of North Texas. He says that he was so bad as a musician he wasn't able to play with any school ensembles, so creating "Snarky Puppy" was his way of getting to play live.

Straight out of the gate the group consisted of 10 members. Since those early days they have gone on to release 14 albums, toured the world, and collaborated with an ever evolving carousel of live musicians as well as with solo artists and orchestras. As usual, there is much more to know, so tune in to Jay and Jesse as they discuss this unique collective on Roots to Grooves.

  • Lamb

"Lamb" are an electronic music duo comprised of singer/songwriter Lou Rhodes and multi-instrumentalist producer, Andy Barlow.

Back in 1994 Lou Rhodes was writing her own original songs but wanted to produce a sound that fused her folk songwriting sensibilities with a more breakbeat/trip-hop approach, a sound she was discovering through listening to various pirate radio stations. After struggling to find the right creative partner, a mutual friend put her in touch with producer Andy Barlow, who at the time was ending a stint as an engineer in a Manchester based studio. After an initial meeting, the pair decided to book some studio time to see what they could come up with. The result was a unique sonic blend of Lou's melodic vocals over Andy's drum & bass inspired beats. With only a few songs in hand they were soon signed to a 6 album deal. On this episode, Jay and Jesse discuss what happened next, and everything in between.

  • Dry Cleaning

"Dry Cleaning" are an English post-punk band who formed in South London in 2018. Despite being relatively new to the scene, the core members have been playing music together, and in seperate acts for over decade. When career success eluded them they took once last stab at a new project, and after a chance meeting with vocalist Florence Shaw, the sound of "Dry Cleaning" was born. Her vocals have been described by some as culturally relevant, but singing and performing did not come naturally to Florence, and it took some convincing for her to officially join the band. There is a lot more to know. Listen to Jay and Jesse getting into the details on this latest episode of Roots to Grooves.
