  • VE Day 75th Anniversary - Peter Teague, Pete Newman, WW2, D Day and the Roseland

Welcome to episode 8 of the Roseland Podcast

I’m Chloe, your host, and this week on the podcast we’re focusing on the 75th Anniversary of VE Day, and what life on the Roseland was like during the war, under the D Day preparations, and on VE Day itself.

If this is the first episode you’re listening to you can find and listen to the podcast at Roselandpodcast.com, on iTunes/Apple Podcast, on Spotify and all other podcast apps.

    VE Day 75th Anniversary

Yesterday, 8th May, was the 75th Anniversary of VE Day. Whilst the Roseland wasn’t the most affected area of the country, or even the county during WW2, plenty went on here.

We weren’t able to do any interviews with anyone who was actually there at the time, so instead, I’m chatting with the next best thing - 2 gentleman who’ve been collecting the stories of what did happen from those who were there.

First up we’ve got Peter Teague from St Just sharing tales of bombings, and VE Day itself. We started by talking about the home guard.

    INTERVIEW

Stories there that I expect many of you didn’t know a thing about!

If we go a little bit further back we come to an event which I think everyone must know the Roseland was involved in, and which was crucial on the path to VE Day - D Day.

And there was only one person we could speak to about that - Pete Newman formerly of Tolverne.

    INTERVIEW

We’ll finish off our VE Day episode with this poem specially written for the anniversary by Alan Durham from Tregony (our guest in episode 2 if he sounds familiar!)

    POEM

Welcome to episode 7 of the Roseland Podcast

    VE Day 75th Anniversary

The 8th May is the 75th Anniversary of VE Day, next week our episode will be all about VE Day and how the war impacted the Roseland. We’ve a host of guests with fascinating stories to share - so do tune in, I bet you’ll learn something about the area you didn’t know!

Might make a nice homeschooling activity too!

That’s going live on 9th May - so please do have a listen.

    Recipe time!

After several weeks now at home I imagine even those of us who love pottering around the kitchen might be running out inspiration - so we’re going to be bringing you some simple, tasty recipe ideas on the show.

This week we have another from Jenny Deal from Tregony and it’s her own recipe for “Fruity Potato Cakes”

    • 125gr. Mashed potatoes
    • 75 gr. SR flour with 1⁄2 tsp. Baking powder
    • 25 gr. Margarine
    • 25 gr. Sugar
    • 1 tbs. Marmalade
    • 25 gr. Dried fruit

Rub marg into flour and potato, add sugar, marmalade and fruit.

Knead lightly and form into a round on a floured board.

Pat out to about 1 cm thick and cut into rounds.

Grease a heavy frying pan and when hot cook the rounds of dough for 2 minutes each side.

Then lower the heat and cook gently for a further 5 or 6 minutes.

When cooked, sprinkle with a mixture of sugar and mixed spice or cinnamon.

    Slice and butter.

Another super tasty recipe there - do check out the Lockdown Pudding recipe we had last episode, another corker!

If you have a recipe you’d like to share please get in touch via [email protected]. You can read it yourself OR we can read it out for you.

    Interview time!

Lindsey and I are keen to help publicise the many groups and clubs that are usually happening on the Roseland to remind us all of all the stuff we can get involved with once lockdown is over - maybe it’ll be time to try something new!

So far we’ve mainly covered sport - so it’s great to be able to get a bit more cerebral this week, and talk music.

    INTERVIEW

    St Anthony's Noyse contact details:

    Richard and Suki Sharp

Lindsey and I are always on the hunt for more people to interview - so if you’d like to come on the show and talk about your group, your hobbies, your job, tips you’ve got for coping with lockdown - we’re interested.

The first step is to drop us an email to [email protected] with your ideas and any questions you’ve got.

Everything is recorded in advance - so we can edit lots!

You don’t even have to be willing to come on the show - if you have a recipe for a great drink, or meal, or a great tip please just email it in and we can read it out for you.

I hope this will help us all feel a little less alone, and connected to our wonderful community.

Our first is from Jenny Deal from Tregony and it’s her own recipe for “Lockdown Pudding”

Lock down pudding - for 2 people

    • Leftover cake (fruit cake with marzipan and icing if you have it) or any stale cake.
    • Break into pieces and put in a bowl.
    • Soak with brandy/rum or orange juice for non alcoholic version.
    • Beat an egg with some vanilla extract and cream if you have it (about 1⁄2 pint) or milk if you haven’t got cream.
    • If using plain cake add some dried fruit to soaking cake.
    • Add chocolate chips or broken up chocolate.
    • Pour egg mix over the soaking cake and stir.
    • Put into a dish and cook in oven in a bain marie (roasting tin filled to about 2 cm depth with
    • water) for about 25 to 30 mins.
    • At 160 fan. Serve with ice cream, custard or yoghurt.

    Interview time!

There are many of us who work for ourselves and do some rather interesting jobs from the Roseland, things you just wouldn’t know were going on in here if you didn’t know. So it’s great to be able to shine a light on all sides of Roseland life with the podcast.

My first guest today falls firmly into the “doing something really interesting from a shed on the Roseland” category.

If you’re doing something interesting in a shed on the Roseland - that we can talk about on the podcast! Then do get in contact - [email protected] as we’d love to hear from you.

    • Two interviews

    • Suz Hext, Paralympian

If this is the first episode you’re listening to, please go back to episode 1 to find out what it’s all about.

    Updates for you

Last episode I was joined by my podcast partner in crime Lindsey Thomas for a run down of the services shops on the Roseland are offering to keep us all fed and watered.

We missed one really important shop last week - St Mawes Pharmacy. They are open as per usual for all your pharmacy requirements, that’s:

    • Mon and Tuesdays 9-6
    • Weds 9-1
    • Thurs and Fri 9-5
    • AND Saturday 10-3

This episode goes live on Easter Saturday - so I should also let you know they’ll be open with a pharmacist on duty on Easter Monday from 2pm to 5pm.

If you have an update you’d like us to share on the podcast - just drop an email to [email protected]

    Interview time!

Let’s face it you’re not listening in to hear me, or the pharmacy opening hours (as important as they are). You hit play to hear a little about what’s going on (or not going on!) on the peninsula at the moment, to hear the stories of some of the wonderful people who live here.

This week I’ve 2 brilliant guests for you, and there’s a bit of a water theme...

    First up is Millie Edwards.

He’s here wearing the hat of Chairman of Roseland Gig Club, to tell us a bit about the history of the club, what the club is up to this season, and how (once we’re allowed out and about) you can get involved.

    INTERVIEW

I have to say I’m rather tempted to head down to a novice session once they’re happening again.

  • The Roseland Podcast- hello and call for content

Over the last week, I’ve been trying to think of a way I can help people during these interesting times. (yes, I mean corvid 19).

Last night I had the genius idea of creating a super-local podcast, that just covers stuff going on on the Roseland. Well, stuff not going on would be a little more accurate!

This first episode is a call-out to find out what you’d like to me to share and find some people I can interview.

So, who am I, and why me to do this? Well, my name’s Chloe Thomas I grew up on the Roseland, and about 5 years ago I moved back. I live here full time working from home as a podcast host and author. My usual subject matter is eCommerce and digital marketing - so this is going to be a little bit of leap into the dark for me, but I’m hoping it’ll work!!

I don’t think this podcast should be a news channel - we’ve all got plenty of places we can access medical and political opinion, and there’s the Roseland Online website too. Plus, it’s hard to do a podcast in real-time - so any news updates would inevitably be old news by the time I got them live.

Rather an at-least weekly audio show where I chat to one or two people of the peninsula and provide updates on useful information. I’m thinking the following topics - but I’m open to ideas:

    • Services updates - takeaways, food deliveries, shop openings
    • Help updates - I know Roseland Surgery Patients Group are busy with this - anyone else let me know
    • Art, Culture, History - we’ve got lots of clever and interesting people here on the Roseland - who has a story to tell? Old Cornwall got any projects worth sharing? Any of our local authors fancy having a chat about your latest book?
    • Education - any tutors fancy giving some tips on homeschooling?
    • Religion - a lot of people will be missing their regular church and chapel services maybe we can do something to help here?
    • Sport - in normal times I’d suggest updates from the local sports clubs.. .but not really sure how to include sport!
    • Nature and farming - spring is all around us - anyone want to come on and talk about it?
    • Music - got to be careful with copyright but there might be a way to add some

I can’t get out and about to find great content - so I’m relying on you to let me know if you’ve got something to share, or if you know of someone who I should be in contact with.

Do all of that via [email protected]

Technically I’ve got all the software to record and edit shows - so as a guest you can either phone in or log in to the recording online.

Everything is recorded in advance - so we can edit...
