In this episode I’m absolutely honoured to be joined by Rob Campbell, Professional Director, Chancellor of Auckland University of Technology, Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, and Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Directors

Rob is a New Zealand businessman icon, but deeper than that, he is a genuine Kiwi guy who consistently stands up for what he believes in, championing causes not just in business, but for New Zealand communities.  He takes steps, opens conversations, and considers a wide scope, making a positive impact through networks and associations to increase awareness and promote action.

His success is indisputable, his road to the top a squiggly line of opportunities taken, even if not always popular, and bridging gaps with people in a way that has displayed emotional intelligence, empathy, and understanding.  Rob has from his early career had a unique ability to understand complexity and deliver with relevance to specific audiences, some saying in his earlier union days that he “appeared to have a social conscience and a working class heart as well”

Welcome to this Rosey Review episode.  In these segments I usually take a single topic aligned to recruitment, getting a job, or a career question I have received and share my views.  But in this episode I’m sharing from our Her Career Leader Led Conversations Over Coffee call where we had the privilege to hear from Hilary Walton, Chief Information Security Officer for Kordia.

So what is “Conversations Over Coffee”? During 2020 lockdown Her Career recognised the importance of connecting the women in our FB Hub "Millennial INTRApreneurs thriving in their 9 - 5", and a safe space to share.  We also introduced a Leader Led call, to provide a space for a senior INTRApreneurial woman to share her career journey, insights, experience and inspiration. This call makes leaders accessible, showing more of their whole human self.  To date we have had over 20 FB Hub community calls, this is our 06th Leader Led call.

The beginning of this call is a little behind the scenes before everyone else joined us, touching on some of our vulnerability realness, I felt it was important to preserve for the podcast.

In this episode I’m joined by Maxine Elliot, CEO of Paymark.  At Paymark, Maxine is focused on transforming the way that Kiwi’s pay for goods and services, now and into the future.  They’re a big company with a small company mentality, believing that nothing is impossible.

As CEO, Maxine loves that Paymark is an organisation Kiwis’ not only rely on, but trust.  She works hard with her team to ensure the culture at Paymark is one where people can bring their whole selves.

Throughout her career, growth and change are words that have helped to fuel her drive.  Maxine was heavily involved in rolling out the Ultra-Fast Fibre network in various parts of the New Zealand and has lead multi-national companies, both here in New Zealand and overseas.

A quick note, we recorded before the announcement of the government moving to crack down on interchange fees, with the proposed Retail Payments Systems Bill, a proposed new regulatory regime to be overseen by the Commerce Commission, and budget announcement.

The plan for this episode was to create a Graduate and new to work panel, from those who have recently joined the workforce so they can share a piece of their story, what they’re doing, future career aspirations, and provide insights for those organisations searching to hire fresh new talent.

We got so close...but then illness and technology got in the way!  The bad news, two guests couldn’t be on this episode, and there may be some conversation flow issues with comments made referring to audio that couldn’t be included, BUT, there were gems I wanted to keep in the episode so I’m sure you’ll get the drift!  The GREAT news, Doris from Auckland Transport, and Fergielyn from Henry Hughes Patent & Trade Mark Attorneys who do join me, are an absolute joy, intelligent, open, honest, and with aspirations that are inspirational.

Doris went to the University of Canterbury and although completed in 2019, graduated in 2020 due to COVID a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in International Business & Marketing and a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Japanese & Chinese.  She also completed a Tikanga course in 2020 and has started the Te Ara Reo Maori course, both with Te Wananga o Aotearoa.

Fergielyn, or Fergie as she is also known, completed a conjoint LLB/BA (Classical Studies) with Victoria University of Wellington, and Professional Legal Studies, both this year in 2021, and is currently completing her Post Grad Honours Classical Studies Programme

In this episode I’m joined by Mark Donovan, a specialist in employment law and civil litigation.

Mark commenced practice as a Barrister in Auckland in 2009 after practising as a Senior Solicitor at leading national law firm, Buddle Findlay.  Committed to providing excellent service and practical results, Mark gives clear advice to assist in the prevention, and resolution of, employment-related, and other civil disputes.

As a graduate of the University of Auckland with bachelor degrees in Arts and Law (Honours), Mark has presented seminars to clients and interest groups on employment-related legal issues.  He has also written articles for the Employment Law Bulletin and the National Business Review, given his expertise, I’m excited to be able to share his insights.

In this episode we dive into the unusual way he ended up in employment law and civil litigation, whether the reality of working in law matched he thought it would be when leaving uni, why he left a big firm to do his own thing, tips to employees on how to face disestablishment, what he loves about his work, what you should be thinking about when considering an employment offer and much more.
