Wayne Lysobey's book is Long Live Open Water https://amzn.to/30OY2rX
He wrote a poem for Marlene
There once was a man who did row
But when older he found he did slow
    So he then did decide
He’d go fast on the slide
Either that or he’d get him a tow

15:00 How to think less in rowing. Rowers sometimes tie themselves in knots by thinking too much about their technique. Try thinking for 10 strokes and not thinking for 10 strokes. There’s an elasticity in rowing without tensions. Drills are important to create new movement patterns.
21:00 Do your workout with the voice in your head. Be un-judgemental. It’s not good or bad - did I do it correctly?
28:00 The Hula dancer on the pendent boat at Craftsbury - did you row this boat?
30:00 Lay back versus body angle. Too much layback is common. What’s the purpose of layback. Swing is using your body weight. Layback does not necessarily increase the length of your stroke. Ergs reward layback but not in the boat.
32:00 Pay attention to your lower back; don’t collapse it. Too far means you don’t have enough time to set your body angle.
Try feet out rowing for getting the pressure in the second half of the drive.

  • San Diego Crew Classic
Bobbie Smith and Craig Doan talk running a regatta in a pandemic.
    Timestamps
01:00 The race started in 1973 to prove the West coast crews could beat the East coast US crews. The rowing season starts here with the San Diego Crew Classic. It's on 27 March 2021.
03:00 Popular events are masters, juniors and collegiate events. There are invitational events for collegiate crews and all are 8s, quads and fours racing on the water. This year an erg crew option is also offered.
06:00 This year it's all new. We had 3 plans for the event and hoped for a normal on water regatta. But that was not possible. We are working with Time Team to deliver the team boat erg timing. Instead of averaging a group of erg scores, they constantly merge each athlete's time into a single time for the whole crew so you cross the line together at the same moment.
08:00 On the water races are also offered with two 1,250m pieces raced in opposite directions.
The final entry day is March 19th.

the SimulatOar is the most accurate rowing simulator available.
03:50 The SimulatOar demonstration - Balancing aspect as it's mounted on springs. The Oar handles have a full range of movement and include feathering. You adjust the load by changing the inboard and a damper on the flywheel. It includes the PM5 monitor from Concept2 and stores vertically for compact storage. We have 100% customer satisfaction.
07:45 What's new? We are always making improvements and all machines are upwardly compatible. The latest version has "competitive mode". It makes the catch quicker and the load heavier, giving more work in the legs like in a race.
The Sinkovic Brothers in Croatia train on it in a pair 2- configuration.
09:00 Switching the rig from sweep to sculling involves changing a rigger and takes about 15 minutes.

06:00 This Past Week - what we've been doing to advocate for Masters Rowing
Marlene's coaching correspondence included an athlete who was under-performing and concerned about making progress. What time of day do you train? A busy schedule means you aren't getting enough sleep. You're tired. No wonder you're under-performing.
Book Recommendation The New Toughness Training for Sports James E. Loehr
    https://amzn.to/3qDrMUf
Try to add 1 hour sleep a night so you get 7 not 6 hours. Take rest days during the week and do strength training.
Have a snack at work 3-4 pm and train at 5 pm when you get home. Then have a lighter dinner and eat a little later so you can get to bed by 11 pm not 12.30 am.

21:00 Force Curve Analysis - common observations.
Last third of the drive is not symmetrical on the force curve - you are losing drive suspension
First part of the curve is very sharp - you are kicking the catch
25:00 How does cross training fit into masters rowing?
Include strength training - is it just aerobic or is it everything?
Strength is important - it sustains muscle mass and protein stimulus for both men and women
We don't insist you do cross training. Does it fit in your schedule? Variety helps alleviate boredom.
Be careful - if it isn't something you do regularly - the shock to your body can be tough bringing tissue fatigue and possible injury.
