  • The Candid Cox Cast: Arshay Cooper's Most Beautiful Thing
Rower, author, & speaker Arshay Cooper joins me to talk about how a group of all-black high schoolers in a rough area see a boat on campus one day and against all odds, become unlikely teammates that learn to trust and work as a very different kind of crew. Arshay's infectious energy and stories about finding his voice through rowing with athletes from many rival gangs is a do-not-miss story that made it to the cover of the newspapers and garnered attention from around the world!
Arshay's book "A Beautiful Thing" releases June 30!

  • The Candid Cox Cast: Realities of LGBTQ+ & Rowing (Michael Toutloff)
Michael from Chicago Rowing joins me to discuss how AWESOME the gay Games are and what the realities of LGBTQ+ athletes still deal with. This humbling episode really shows us how federations still don't know how to "deal with" certain issues (this was fascinating!), how creative clubs are getting to recruit and include minorities and LGBTQ+ athletes, and SO much more!

06:50 Carol Daley’s question I’d  like to  hear  Marlene Royle, Rowing Coach discuss  a  little  more  in  depth  about  inboard  and  its relationship  to  rigging.
Goal of rigging is to have a longer stroke / time in the water.
Effective stroke length incorporates physiological comfort.
16:00 changes in rigging should not create pain or aches 2-3 days after you make the change.
22:00 New to the 1x tip is get a good posture in the boat - get a correct placement and correct extraction of the oars. Get your own oars allows for customisation of rigging.
27:00 When to incorporate drills into your practice. The role of drills. Drills for crews are about blending timing and rhythm. Early in the session your attention is at a peak.
31:00 The push and pull drill.

02:00 Background in rowing and professional personal training and fitness training for women and weight loss.
05:00 Pacing your 2k correctly. Knowing what not to do is important. Physiology - lactic acid flood hurts and the 3rd 500 is a suffer fest.
07:00 Have a strategic approach. The ideal approach is to get on a pace you can sustain and a little bit faster at the end.
10:35 When you drift off the target split. Mental strategies to follow.
12:50 Physical strategies - focus on rate.
1430 Being a successful lightweight - coaches need to get educated. Create a plan for yourself
16:30 Write a calendar for your weigh in - 8 weeks in advance. Weekly target weight loss. Build healthy eating habits.
23:00 Coaches need to learn. Systematic ways to lose weight. They might go faster while losing weight. It's an opportunity for athletes to get to know their bodies. Learn how much weight you lose when asleep.
26:30 I weigh in once a week. Self-talk what does it tell you? It's not your self-worth.
33:00 Top tips for team support - knowing ourself is key. What does your crew mate say that help or hider? Always frame remarks in the positive.

  • Corruption in Rowing - Saul Garcia
There's both corruption and racism in rowing. Saul Garcia is a former Mexican team international lightweight athlete. Having studied in Canada and trained in the national development squad there, he has a unique insight into the differences between both systems.
03:00 Background in rowing - I chose University of Victoria in Canada for my rowing career. Howard Campbell was my training partner. https://govikesgo.com/sports/mens-rowing/roster/coaches/howard-campbell/112
10:30 The differences between Canada and Mexico rowing. We “tropicalize” rowing in Mexico
07:00 I just asked Mike Spraklen if I could join his group in Canada. The Mexican system has less structure. In Canada people and careers in rowing after university; in Mexico it’s juniors. I was too serious for Mexico and spend as too light hearted for Canada!
15:00 Kenia Lechuga Alanis is the most famous Mexican rower - she’s from Monterrey who row on a windy dam but trains in Mexico City on the man-made basin. It’s really flat water. She is fearless!
18:30 Corruption in rowing. It’s a sad topic. In Mexico public funds were used to fund the President’s Federation and lifestyle.
22:30 The Canadian corruption is more sophisticated. Giving jobs to people for years who pander to their interests while athletes have to fund raise for their expenses. $6m spent on salaries while athletes have $1500 per month to live on.
24:00 Is there systemic racism in rowing? There is no program for First Nations or inner city kids in Canada, Rowing Canada posted on Instagram about their “Podium Program” and I was one of only 2 non-white athletes on the team. The other was Chinese Canadian.
30:00 The old boys club. In Mexico it is much more open and the people are changing in leadership. In Canada you don’t rock the boat. You get punished if you throw rocks. It’s more the coaches, There’s always someone else willing to take your slot on an olympic team.
33:00 Can athletes initiate change? Alumni and current team athletes need to speak out. Question decisions and funding; form a union for the national team. Alumni with resources need to get involved. Scholarships or your own club - agglomerate around a goal.

05:30 Should you vary racing starts by weather or boat type? Your start is 2% of your race in a 1k. So it's not very important in the big picture. Practice your starts square blade to check you are being effective and have clean transitions.
10:30 The Danish Women 4x in 1996 start sequence. Our job is to follow the stroke
15:24 The best race Marlene ever had in Aiken, South Carolina in a single. "I remember thinking tap out a fraction earlier for the first 20 strokes. Keep the wheel spinning."
17:20 If you have a peak race, go back 24 hours and identify what you did to set you up for that performance. You need to learn how to turn on / off your stimulation depending on what type of racer you are.
20:50 The concept of work through the pin. The arc of the handle and where the blade is set in the water. The time the blade as adequate force on it during the stroke cycle.
For your rigging - draw a line through your 2 pins and set your footstretcher so when you're at full compression the centre line of your hip are at least level with the line. Or slightly to the stern. You can work on the catch angle later.
30:30 What is VO2 and why do you need to row slow and fast to train it? Create the metabolic conditions in your muscle cells with training. Increase capillary density in your muscle cells.
When racing for masters you race multiple times a day. The person with the best recovery ability will win more races on the last day.
37:15 Will a blade move bow-ward over the course of the drive from the catch to the release? Yes just as the blade is entering and getting loaded up.
41:00 Rowing in salt water you are slower is this resistance training?

45:00 Sculling tip for 1x if you are new to the single scull after lockdown - pausing at the finish drill. Check your handle heights and spoons are on the water. Also check your elbow position.
