  • Ready, Row! USA #29: Rowing Toolbox
Coaching is an acquired craft - part training, part intuition, part educated guess and a lot of “people” skills; and the same goes for the DIY rower. No matter what your role, knowing what tools you need, where to get them and how to use them lets everyone be safe and attended to on the water means faster rowing for less effort!
Today’s show is about the ultimate coach’s toolbox - from certifications to gadgets, and and what rowers need to know about how coaches use them. We tap into the know-how of long-time rower/coaches Tara Morgan, Ryan Worth, and new correspondent Alison Pollini. Senior correspondent Mark Wilson is dealing with hurricane effects at his Florida rowing camp location, so he is contributing remotely this week.
But FIRST, a word from our fabulous sponsors, Oar Inspired and Randall Oar Foil!

    OUR DISCUSSION
Getting footage for analysis - apps like Coach’s Eye, Drones, interns, on board GoPros, Garmin VIRB
Erg Data Trackers - RowHero, ErgData
Oarlock Technology - Empower Oarlock from NK
Big(ger) Toys: Wakeless launches, Blue Ocean Megaphones, waterproof cameras/cases, GPS SpeedCoach
Inclusion Gadgets (ergchatter, ergbuddy, voiceover - iPhone), ActiveHands, Swift Straps, WinTech/Swift/Resolute seats.
John Ewan’s self-centering span gauge allows spans to be checked and adjusted far more quickly than you can do using a tape measure.
Max Rigging himself, aka Mike Davenport, has a new rowing workbook called Get Ready Now!: 12 Immediate Actions To Take Before Your Next Rowing Season. Always good to plan ahead!
Bobble head toy to detect "check."
    Tip from Tara:
Buying the gear is one thing, actually putting it into use to improve your rowing is another.
Incorporating a gadget like an action camera into your athlete’s betterment or your coaching staff’s benefit has to be just as much in the forefront.
For example, you can do video analysis on-the-spot, or post-practice sessions can be set up ahead of time, either by yourself or with a coach.
Try creating a YouTube channel to share voice-over commentary on a video; or add subtitles with questions/ideas to consider.
Also useful are side-by-side comparison videos/photos with same athlete over time or with a goal athlete.
    AND, THATS A WRAP!
