Sarah Hosking exploded onto the women's football scene after being introduced to AFL through a talent search in March 2016.

Hailing from an elite netball background, the No.19 draft pick has developed into one of the most promising midfielders in the competition in just six months.

Senior women's coach Damien Keeping says she will add depth to the Blues' midfield.

"Sarah's ability to impact within, as well as on the outside of the contest, will make her a critical weapon in our search for midfield dominance in 2017," Keeping said.

To celebrate the first-ever elite women's competition, A Footy Girl's Guide to the Stars of 2017 showcases some of the key players to look out for, and reveals how they made it to the top of the women's game.

Alicia Sometimes is an Australian writer, poet and broadcaster. She is a regular guest on ABC 774 and Radio National. She has appeared in ABC TV's Sunday Arts and ABC News Breakfast. She was a 2014 Fellow at the State Library of Victoria and was writer and director of the science-poetry show, Elemental. Alicia has two poetry collections, kissing the curve and Soundtrack and her poems have been in Best Australian Poems, Overland, Southerly, Westerly and many more. She has performed her spoken word at many venues, festivals and events around the world. Alicia has co-edited From the Outer (Black Inc, 2016) alongside Nicole Hayes. She is also one-sixth of The Outer Sanctum.

Dr Clare Hanlon is an Associate Professor and leads the sport management team at Victoria University. She has over 25 years' experience in sport and specialises as an industry advisor, researcher and teacher in facilitating greater participation in sport and physical activity. Her particular focus is on collaboration strategies to encourage females in leadership and participation in sport. In 2015 Clare was on the Victorian Minister for Sport Inquiry into Girls and Women in Sport and Recreation, and based on her research and advisory roles, in 2016 the Minister recognised Clare as a role model in sport. Clare is President of the Sport Management Association of Australia and New Zealand, and a Director on the Board of Gymnastics Australia.

We spoke to Rayoni about the grants that were awarded last week. The first round of VicHealth's new-look Active Club Grants will offer more sport opportunities for women and girls, and social or modified sport programs across the state, through $400,000 in funding to get people moving in fun, flexible and social environments.

As part of VicHealth's long-term plan to get more Victorians living healthier and happier lives, Active Club Grants are providing funding of up to $3,000 to 136 community sport clubs and up to $10,000 to 9 community sport clubs throughout Victoria.
