Rules instead of plays, five out spacing, and three simple jobs that give every player on your team a way to touch the ball.

What if your whole offense fit on a three by five card? Coach Steve Collins opens the season opener series with the December night an opposing coach stood up and yelled the name of his best play before his point guard crossed half court. Their kids jumped every cut, and Steve drove home realizing the other team knew his plays better than his own players did.

In this teaching episode, Steve lays out the big picture of the Rule of 3 Offense, the motion offense he built with Jon Morgan using the same Rule of 3s thinking as the Funnel Down Defense. He explains why rules beat plays, how five out spacing keeps the lane open, why the Mesh Point is where the whole offense lives, and how three rules for three roles give every player on the floor a reason to cut, screen, and touch the ball.

Part 1: Why Rules Beat Plays

• The night an opposing coach yelled out the name of Steve's best play
• Episode one of six: what the season opener series will cover
• A play tells a kid where to go, a rule tells a kid how to think
• Three choices for every decision, not twelve
• Why rules are so hard to scout
• Same Rule of 3s language as the Funnel Down Defense

Part 2: Spacing, the Mesh Point, and Three Roles

• Five out alignment: the point, two wings, and two corners
• Why an empty lane makes cutting and driving easier
• Positionless basketball where every player learns every spot
• The Mesh Point, where the pick, the read, and the cut happen
• Passer rules, cutter rules, and weakside rules on one card
• The quiet senior who scored fourteen once the offense belonged to all five
• A preview of episode two on the passer

• 07:23 The challenge
• 07:36 Postroll: ruleof3offense.com and teachhoops.com

This week's challenge: Write your offense on one three by five card, and if it does not fit, ask what your players are really carrying in their heads.

Format: Teaching Mode, two parts.
