In this episode, I riff on some feedback from @davidCcaldwell. He noticed I’m not clear on my “Why” yet. I explain that the Why is definitely important, but I’m actually one step earlier in the process. I’m in the part of the process that’s dusting myself off, rekindling my passion, and getting my engine started. It’s like Tony Robbin’s “State, Story, Strategy,” where you’ve got to be in state first, then work on your story, and finally work on the strategy to get what you want. The “Why” is akin to the Story, and I’m still in phase one and working on my state.

The quickest way to improve your life is to start focusing on things you can control. If you find yourself hating the rain, then you’ve got some work to do. Rain, sun, snow, all these conditions just present a different set of options. Focusing on things you can’t control puts you in a defeatist mindset and it will bleed over into things you can control: that project, business, craft, the relationship with your family, etc. Let’s work on this.

I’m struggling between the two little men on each shoulder. One tells me to spend my limited time wisely. This makes me feel rushed to get out of doing things that don’t matter. The other guy reminds me that the little steps add up and I need to be focused on the long game. My problem is that I believe in both messages and am trying to reconcile the two ideas.

Can you keep a day job and still build your dream? Can the “side hustle” really work. I’m not sure. With family as my top priority, and a job taking 40-50 hrs of my time each week, I’m struggling to make enough time to get something moving. I think Napoleon had it right: burn the boats. I’m just not brave enough to do that yet.
