RUSH: Well, lots of exciting stuff going on out there today, folks. The latest from this whole controversy over the pope, and words. There are some things that happen that are simply propitious, and this is one of them. The pope utters words, he quotes an old emperor from many centuries ago, and now the Muslim world is going bonkers, rioting, killing a nun in Somalia, shooting her in the back while she was praying. These Muslim extremists, Islamofascists are proving everything that the pope’s words indicated. The New York Times had an editorial on Sunday that just totally misses the point, but, boy, is it expressive and illustrative.

First off from Reuters, dateline Dubai. “An Iraqi militant group led by al Qaeda vowed a war against the ‘worshippers of the cross’ in response to a recent speech by Pope Benedict on Islam that sparked anger across the Muslim world. The statement was made in an Internet statement by the Mujahideen Shura Council, an umbrella group led by Iraq’s branch of Al-Qaeda, said, ‘We tell the worshipper of the cross (the Pope) that you and the West will be defeated, as is the case in Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya… We shall break the cross and spill the wine. … God will (help) Muslims to conquer Rome. … God enable us to slit their throats, and make their money and descendants the bounty of the mujahideen.” Yeah, this is a peaceful religion, there’s no question about it. The pope simply utters words. But guess who one of the staunchest allies of Al-Qaeda happened to be yesterday? Well, not Jacques Chirac. It was the New York Times.

RUSH: I’m really happy to introduce to you Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who joins us from Washington. The last time I spoke to you, Madam Secretary, was during the 2000 presidential campaign, so it’s long overdue, but welcome to the program here.

SECRETARY OF STATE RICE: Well, it’s great to be with you, Rush. I can’t believe it’s been that long.

RUSH: Time flies when you’re having a good, good time.

SECRETARY OF STATE RICE: (Laughs.) It does. It does.

RUSH: Look, I want to get straight to this because I know your time is limited. The press conference today the president had about the congressional legislation he wants, 45 Democrats opposed — I’m not trying to draw you into political questions here, rest assured — you’ve got the three Republicans here, McCain and Warner and Lindsey Graham joining the Democrats opposing this. Secretary Powell wrote Senator McCain a letter that McCain has publicized. You have responded in a letter to Senator Warner. What did you say?

SECRETARY OF STATE RICE: Well, in fact I sent the letter before I had seen Secretary Powell’s letter. My letter simply stated the Department of State’s position, which is that the interpretation of a US treaty obligation through US law is something that we do frequently and all the time. We’re not trying to change what’s called Common Article 3. We’re not trying to weaken it. We just want our professionals to have clarity so that they know what is legal and what is not, and I have absolutely no problem defending what the president has asked the Congress to do when I go internationally. I think it only makes sense that you would not leave a very unclear standard like that of Common Article 3, which talks about “outrages on human dignity,” for instance, Rush. You don’t want to leave that to unaccountable prosecutors, for instance, internationally. You want US law to define that.

RUSH: In Chicago we’ve been following the “living-wage” argument and the Big Box Resolution, trying to keep Wal-Mart stores out of the city. (story) “The so-called ‘living-wage’ ordinance that would have required mega-retailers here to pay their workers higher wages was successfully turned back Wednesday as supporters on the City Council could not muster enough votes to override Mayor Richard Daley’s veto. Daley, who vetoed the ordinance this week saying it would cost the city jobs and hurt people who need those jobs the most, was able to convince enough aldermen who voted in favor of the ordinance in July to change their votes. The vote was 31-18 in favor of overriding the veto — three short of the necessary votes to do so.”

RUSH: From the UK’s Daily Mail: “Men are More Intelligent than Women, Claims a New Study.” It’s by, let’s see… This website prints out in the weirdest way. You never know where the story starts. “It is research that is guaranteed to delight men and infuriate the women in their lives. A controversial new study has claimed that men really are more intelligent than women. The study, carried out by a man, of course, concluded that men’s IQs are almost four points higher than women’s on average. British-born researcher John Philippe Rushton,” (laughing), “who previously created a furor by suggesting intelligence is influenced by race says the finding could explain why so few women make it to the top in the workplace,” or that when they get to the top they start spying on board members and Congress investigates like out at Hewlett-Packard.

RUSH: This next story — I’m sure you’ve seen this, heard about it. This is the kind of thing that infuriates me, and I have to tell you, when I watched The Path to 9/11. (By the way, we’re going back to audio sound bites three and four next, Ed.) When I saw all of the hesitation and all the rules and all the regulations that prevented us from taking out Bin Laden or other terrorists, my blood boiled, and now there’s this story in the New York Post today. Taliban — and there’s a picture of it. “Taliban terror leaders who had gathered for a funeral – and were secretly being watched by an eye-in-the-sky American drone – dodged assassination because U.S. rules of engagement bar attacks in cemeteries, according to a shocking report. 

“U.S. intelligence officers in Afghanistan are still fuming about the recent lost opportunity for an easy kill of Taliban honchos packed in tight formation for the burial…” NBC had the pictures. It looked like there might have been a hundred and ninety of them there! “The unmanned airplane, circling undetected high overhead, fed a continuous satellite feed of the juicy target to officers on the ground. ‘We were so excited. I came rushing in with the picture,’ one U.S. Army officer told NBC. But that excitement quickly turned to gut-wrenching frustration because the rules of engagement on the ground in Afghanistan blocked the U.S. from mounting a missile or bomb strike in a cemetery, according to the report. Pentagon officials declined comment and referred The Post to Central Command officers in Afghanistan, who did not respond to a request for comment or explanation,” by press time.

RUSH: You know, I’m sitting here, folks, and I’m watching all this self-absorbed remembrances going on in the media today about 9/11, and I promise you we’re not going to do that. I’m not going to bother telling you what I thought on 9/11. It wasn’t about me. There’s one thing that strikes me. It just hit me like a bolt of lightning this morning as I’m watching this stuff. There is one day a year where the Democratic Party and the American left admit that 9/11 happened, and it’s 9/11, it’s today. Now, what happened to the other 364 days of the year? They just pretend it never happened. But today, oh, yes, it happened. We’re out there doing the mass mush walk, and it’s interesting to note.

I watched The Path to 9/11 last night on the plane ride back home from Los Angeles. I wanted to watch the Manning bowl which was on at the same time. So I intended just to watch the parts of the movie I knew where there might be edits, and I couldn’t tear myself away from it, even a second time, ladies and gentlemen. We’ll talk about it in greater detail here in just a moment. But the edits were not that severe. They really weren’t.

RUSH: Well, in the trade paper Variety, the movie and television industry newspaper, the possibility has been posed that Disney will totally scrap the movie, The Path to 9/11, that Iger is not happy with it, and just may broom the whole thing. I don’t know if that will happen, but I’ll tell you what has happened here is so eye-opening and illustrative that I wish it were self-explanatory to a lot of people, but sadly it probably isn’t. What happened yesterday is that the Senate Democrats, a bunch of the leadership in the Senate, sent Robert Iger, the CEO of Disney, a threatening letter. What we have here, ladies and gentlemen is a mob-like reaction from partisan hacks to intimidate an American broadcast network — and that network, ABC, is being intimidated.

RUSH: Old Joey last night in the debate told another whopper. Yes, the vice president of the United States was talking to Paul Ryan. He said, “By the way, they talk about this Great Recession like it fell out of the sky. Like, ‘Oh, my goodness!’ Like, ‘Where did it come from?'” and he looked over at Ryan and said, “It came from this man voting to put two wars on a credit card at same time, put a prescription drug plan on a credit card, and a trillion-dollar tax cut for the very wealthy! I was there!”

RUSH: Let’s play audio sound bite number 16. CNN’s Anderson Cooper 180, with hardly any audience, which is why we’re going to play this bite for you, spoke with the international correspondent at CNN, Michael Ware. Cooper said, ‘Everybody seems to admit, look, there’s no military solution, and yet politically there’s hardly any civilians on the ground in a lot of these areas, and the Afghan government is riddled with corruption. We’re trying to bolster in these areas a government which has not represented its people.’

WARE: We’re not at the point where we could lose this war. This Taliban will continue to fight as long as US troops or foreign troops want to be there. So the whole idea is to put enough military pressure on the Taliban war machine to parlay that pressure at the negotiating table or to bring a political solution. Now, President Obama has to man up and decide: is he going to fight this war or is he going to oversee an American defeat.

RUSH: A CNN reporter says to Obama, man up or lose Afghanistan? Man up or lose? Or is he going to oversee an American defeat? What do you think the answer to the question is? He’s willing to oversee an American defeat. He came out and said victory is an uncomfortable word in Afghanistan. So, meanwhile, the general who Obama wants and who Obama appointed and who Obama got confirmed wants some more troops. Mr. President, you are not a state senator from Illinois. You are the commander-in-chief of the US military. Do your job. Drop the politics. We got heroes on the battlefield giving their last full measure of devotion to this country and you’re voting ‘present.’ All because he doesn’t want to upset the applecart, the precious balance in Congress on his health care bill — well, on a health care bill because of the radical left. And now The Politico is fascinated with who leaked this news that Obama’s not gonna come up with the troops that the general wants, who leaked that the general wants the troops. It’s the funniest thing. It’s the most incredible story.

RUSH: Here’s Barry Diller. Audio sound bite number 15. The Fox Business Channel today where Maria Bartiromo, she got IAC and Expedia chairman Barry Diller. “What are you seeing in New York, Barry? What’s your take on recovery post-pandemic, the protesting, the looting that we saw earlier this year in New York City?”

DILLER: We opened our offices actually Labor Day, we said, “Pease come, if you can,” and truthfully no one comes. There’s so much of the city idle, it is not sustainable. Drive anywhere, walk anywhere, and you see local destruction. We gotta get used to the risks. And we’ve gotta take some risks — particularly people who are not vulnerable — and get back to full life. Work from home is not productive. The concept of work from home does not work, full stop.
