Charlotte, NC—In November 1999, Former NFL Player, Rae Carruth was at the height of his career with the Carolina Panthers. But his legacy would be tainted by one act - “murder for hire”.
Rae was dating a woman by the name of Cherica Adams, she was a 24-year-old real estate agent and a part time exotic dancer.
On November 16, 1999, sometime after midnight, Cherica Adams was on her way home from a movie date with Rae Carruth when she was shot five times in her vehicle with a .357 caliber handgun, at the time of her murder, Cherica was six months pregnant with Rae Carruth’s son.
Before Cherica succumbed to her injuries, she managed to call 911, and she provided details that Rae Carruth was involved in the ambush along with several other men.
The manhunt for Rae Carruth would ensue with him being found hiding in the trunk of a friend's car.
Although Cherica died from her injuries 28 days later, her son Chancellor (Chance) Lee survived.
Rae Carruth spent 18 years in prison and was released in 2018.
