GUEST BIO and LINKS

Richard Sprott entered the San Francisco leather scene in 1990, and after a few years joined the Defenders/SF.  That led to involvement in the SF Leathermen’s Discussion Group, serving on the Board between 1999 until 2006, and he currently runs the LDG Mentoring Program which he started in 2012.  He was chosen to hold the title of SF Leather Daddy XXIII in 2005. In 2009, he was chosen as Mr. Alameda County Leather.  He has a large leather family supporting him.

Richard received his Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from UC Berkeley in 1994, and currently researches kink identity development and kink health and well-being.  He is the President-Elect of the Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity (APA Division 44) for 2020-2021.

He is also the co-author of Sexual Outsiders: Understanding BDSM Sexualities and Communities (Rowman & Littlefield, 2013). Along with Dr. Elisabeth Sheff, he is co-editor of a new book series Diverse Sexualities, Genders, and Relationships from Rowman & Littlefield.

He is also serving currently as the Executive Director of the Community-Academic Consortium for Research on Alternative Sexualities (CARAS ), a nonprofit corporation designed to promote scientific and scholarly research on BDSM sexuality, polyamory and other forms of consensual non-monogamy.  He is currently the Research Director of The Alternative Sexualities Health Research Alliance (TASHRA). TASHRA is a community-based research organization with a focus on the health of kink-identified and BDSM-involved people. In 2016 TASHRA implemented the first National Kink Health Survey which resulted in the first snapshot of the health status and experiences in the healthcare system of kink-identified communities in the United States, including injury rates, impact of stigma, and issues around mental health.
