Cincinnati, OH—20-year-old Deasia Watkins was born into a troubled and dysfunctional environment from the very beginning of her life. Deasia’s mother and father struggled with mental health and substance abuse issues and the family often lived in squalor which caused Deasia’s development to stall to the point where she was nonverbal up until age 4.
Job and Family Services were involved with the family several times. Deasia was subsequently removed from her mother’s care, by court order and placed with a family friend, at which time she started to show signs of improvement, but the damage had already been done.
In 2015, Deasia gave birth to a baby girl - Jayniah, and during her first few weeks of life, Deasia had a psychotic episode and was subsequently admitted to a psychiatric hospital where she was diagnosed with postpartum psychosis, a condition that is often marked by hallucinations, delusions and impaired judgement. Deasia’s infant daughter, 3-month-old Jayniah was then placed in the care of Deasia’s Aunt, and Deasia was ordered to have no contact with the baby.
On March 16, 2015, this case takes a horrific and tragic turn and is one of the worst cases of Maternal Filicide in The United States to date.
Listen to Season 4: Episode 2 to find out how this heartbreaking case unfolds.
