Volleyball National League is currently taking place in Kempton Park for five weeks. Nine Provincial men’s teams are taking part in the men’s section in both Indoor and Beach Volleyball.

Baroka FC defender Lawrence Ntswane’s gamble of quitting a teaching job paid off after he signed for the Telkom Cup champions last season in March. He became a regular player in central defence to help the team survive relegation by a whisker. He featured in seven league matches for Baroka. Ntswane is happy the risk paid off.

The PSL transfer market continues to heat up and produce some surprise transfers. One such surprise was Orlando Pirates signing three key players from Bloemfontein Celtic. Striker Tshegofatso Mabasa, Kabelo Dlamini and Bongani Sam. Along with them are Fortune Makaringe and Siphesihle Ndlovu from Maritzburg United and Tebogo Tlolane from Chippa United. The signing of Mabasa came as a surprise as weeks earlier, Celtic management lamented that they would retain the services of Mabasa. The 22-year old was Celtic’s top goal scorer last season scoring 10 goals in all competitions. He shares that he is aware that it would not be easy to break into Coach Milutin Sredojevic’s starting eleven.

Bafana Bafana striker Percy Tau says they lost their opening 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) game to Ivory Coast because their attack wasn’t sharp upfront. Bafana lost 1-0 to the Elephants at the Al Salam stadium after some uninspiring performance from Stuart Baxter’s team failing to hit the target in the game on Monday. Aston Villa striker Jonathan Kodjia scored the only goal of the game in the second half. Played in scorching heat, this game saw the West Africans producing some chances, including hitting the woodwork. Bafana finished the game without a single shot on target and that explains Tau’s remarks. Baxter still sees some positives as he also looks forward to their last group game against Morocco.

New Black Leopards coach Lionel Soccoia conducted his first training session on Monday afternoon in Ladana, Polokwane and, he is pleased with how things started. Soccoia was announced last week as Dylan Kerr’s successor at the club. His two assistants Patrick Mabedi and Morgan Shivambu also reported for duty along with new signings Thuso Phala and Mogakolodi Ngele.

Founder of the South African Elderly women’s team Vakhegula Vakhegula, Rebecca Beka Ntsanwisi says she is proud of the trend set by the Grannies across the world. Ntsanwisi and the team landed in the country on Monday from the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France where they thumbed the host nation 10-0 in a friendly. Ntsanwisi reveals that she is going to start organising a world cup for the Grannies in two years. Vakhegula coach Nteteku Mapetla says that the team really had a good time, adding that the French Grannies are beginners in the game.

National First Division side Cape Umoya United may only be beginning pre-season training next week, but the club’s head coach Dominic Isaacs was hard at work on Monday already, as Umoya hosted open trials at their Pinelands base. Hundreds of hopeful young footballers descended on the training ground in Cape Town hoping to impress Isaacs, who admits he is looking forward to start training next week after almost two months on the sidelines.
