Asanda Sangweni of Hlangabeza Primary school, Khutsong, is looking forward to the 2019 Gauteng Schools Individual Chess Championship to take place in Tshwane Event Centre, on the 24th - 25th May. Sangweni, who took the first place in D2 finals, will be among the 17 learners from Hlangabeza to join other Gauteng schools, to partake in these championships. The 13-year-old says that she is looking forward to the tournament.

Netball South Africa announced a team that will compete at the 2019 World Cup in Liverpool, England from the 12th to the 21st of July in Johannesburg on Wednesday. The 12-women strong team comprises of experienced and up and coming youngsters. SA finished third at the 1967 World Cup in England, and also finished second at the 1995 tournament again in England.

The Absa Premiership top goal scorer with 16 this season, Mwape Musonda of Black Leopards has got a simple message for the desperate Kaizer Chiefs side, he’s waiting for their call. Musonda was responding to reports that Chiefs is one of the team that’s interested in his services together with Bidvest Wits and Supersport United. SABC Sport is aware that Chiefs scouts have been following the Zambian international striker analysing his game and movement and see how he can fit into their style of play. Musonda says he’s open to the move.

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane has saluted the South African and African born coaches in the PSL for raising their hands this season and dominate over the European coaches. All the trophies have been won by local coaches, including the Telkom Knockout competition which was claimed by former Zambian international Wedson Nyirenda at Baroka FC. Also, Mosimane says it is important for Bafana Bafana head coach Stuart Baxter to build a strong team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and not just focus on getting the results at this coming AFCON in Egypt.

SABC Sport has learned that Mamelodi Sundowns is prioritising a no.9 type of a striker, possibly from West Africa. The name of Togolese international Kodjo Fo-Do Laba came up. He is with Moroccan side RS Berkane who are in the CAF Confederation Cup final against Egyptian giants Zamalek. Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane believes that Emiliano Tade will be key upfront for them next season.

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane says Orlando Pirates attacker Thembinkosi Lorch deserved the Footballer of the Season award which he got at the PSL awards in Durban this past weekend. Mosimane was reacting to comments that Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana should’ve been the recipient of this award. Mosimane has questioned how their number one goalkeeper Denis Onyango failed to win the goalkeeper of the year ward and instead it went to Ronwen Williams of Supersport United.

Bafana Bafana head coach Stuart Baxter has included Swiss based defender Joel Untersee and Crystal Palace’s Nikola Tavares in his 30-man provisional squad for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament to be held in Egypt next month. Baxter says the two players who are yet to kick the ball for Bafana are still in the process of finalising their paperwork that will make them eligible to play for South Africa. Baxter has gone for the tried and tested in his squad selecting largely the players he’s used in the AFCON qualifiers.

Bloemfontein Celtic goalkeeper Mondli Mpoto is overjoyed after getting a call up to represent South Africa at the 2019 COSAFA Cup. SAFA on Monday announced a raw Bafana Bafana group for the COSAFA Cup that kicks-off on Saturday and will be led by David Notoane. Other goalkeepers selected are Darren Johnson from NFD side Ajax Cape Town and Reyaad Pieterse who plays for league champions Mamelodi Sundowns. Mondli who joined Celtic in February this year shares his feelings on the call-up.

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt says he needs to strengthen his entire squad if they want to pose a stronger challenge on more fronts next season. The Students ended third in the Absa Premiership in the 2018/19 campaign, despite leading the standings for most of the way. They also reached the semi-finals of the Telkom Knockout, while they were beaten in the quarter-final stage of the Nedbank Cup. Hunt believes they need plenty of new faces if they are to make another strong push for the championship next year, adding that signings would all be made by upper management.
