Psalm 58: A Prayer for the Punishment of the Wicked. Starts, "Do ye indeed speak righteousness, O congregation?" More Miktams! And this one is also classified as one of the Imprecatory Psalms, begging God to kill our enemies so we can dance in their blood. That's so sweet! And if you're bored, it's a magic spell that can be recited as protection from an aggressive dog. Super dope!

Psalm 59: A Prayer for Deliverance from Enemies. Starts, "Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God." No mercy! Sweep the leg!

Psalm 60: A Prayer for Help against the Foe. Starts, "O God, thou hast cast us off, thou hast scattered us." In which we invite Sir Stephen Fry to appear on our podcast because he's a great, hilarious guy, and we are mere peasants. Sir Fry may throw his sandal at us any day, and we shall consider ourselves blessed!

Miktam is a word of unknown meaning found in the headings of this group of Psalms. Maybe it's a lid! Who could know?

Psalm 56: A Prayer of Trust. Starts, "Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up." This psalm is a prayer for help against enemies, by which it is meant that the psalmist prays God will kill people and absolutely demolish entire nations. So sweet!

Psalm 57: A Prayer for Rescue from Persecutors. Starts, "Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me." This psalm refers to that time David was hiding in a cave watching Saul do peepees. Much poesy!

Psalm 54: A Prayer for Protection from Enemies. Starts, "Save me, O God, by thy name." This super short psalm was written for one who finds oneself betrayed by a friend. It's steeped in paranoia.

Psalm 55: A Prayer for the Destruction of the Deceitful. Starts, "Give ear to my prayer, O God." In this psalm, the author grieves because he is surrounded by enemies. Suspicion, mistrust, and even fear are the hallmarks of a delusional mind, so my guy should seek therapy pronto. Not everyone is out to get you, despite what Fox News wants you to believe.

Husband and Wife cover Psalms 51 - 53

[[Support our Campaign to raise funds for our live broadcast equipment]] https://giveb.co/s/YOmP73

Psalm 51: A Prayer for Cleansing. Starts, "Have mercy upon me, O God." David's confession is regarded as a model for repentance in both Judaism and Christianity. But let's be honest: Dude was absolutely not sorry. He wanted to bang that MILF so he had her hubby killed. He nasty. Alternative Facts: If Trump can memorize this psalm, maybe he won't end up in jail? Bahaha as if that assclown could memorize anything!

Psalm 52: The Futility of Boastful Wickedness. Starts, "Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man?" David criticises those who use their talents for evil, but it comes across more as David telling God how to Yaweh.

Psalm 53: The Folly and Wickedness of Men. Starts, "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God." First, I'm a-okay being labeled a fool under those circumstances. But second point of fact: You are an all-powerful being worried about ME when there are actual pedos running loose, and babies with cancer, and hungey homeless children? Miss me with that shit. God ain't real and YOU'RE the fool if you think he is. So there! Nya nya nya!

  • Psalms Chapters 48 - 50: Bible Study for Atheists
Husband and Wife cover Psalms 48 - 50

[[Support our Campaign to raise funds for our live broadcast equipment]] https://giveb.co/s/YOmP73

Psalm 48: The Beauty and Glory of Zion. Starts, "Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised." This psalm is a celebration of the security of Zion, which is a synechdoche of Jerusalem. You thought you were coming here for the Bible, but in reality you get the grammar. Have a Coke and simmer down.

Psalm 49: The Folly of Trusting in Riches. Starts, "Hear this, all ye people." This psalm teaches that the purpose of one's life on earth is to enhance spiritual development and stay poor and pay no attention to the man behind the curtain because that man is rich and he wants you to stay poor Real Bad.

Psalm 50: God Is the Judge. Starts, "The mighty God, even the LORD, hath spoken." God hollers at his followers that he doesn't need all those goat testicles so they can stop sacrificing them if they aren't gonna live that life. It Don't Mean a Thing, If It Ain't Got That Swing.

Also sidenote: Wife confused Korah with some other poor sap that got smote. Achan was stoned to death for stealing the spoils of the fall of Jericho. And now you know. Again. Sorry.

  • Psalms Chapters 45 - 47: Bible Study for Atheists
Husband and Wife cover Psalms 45 - 47

[[Support our Campaign to raise funds for our live broadcast equipment]] https://giveb.co/s/YOmP73

Psalm 45: A Song for the King's Marriage. Starts, "My heart is inditing a good matter." This is a wedding song composed and sung by a minstrel, played on an instrument shaped like a rose. But it's also about a messiah — either one who already came and left after getting hardcore murdered, or one who is still planning an eventual visit that will likely never happen because the world is on fire and there are no Airbnb's available.

Psalm 46: A song of holy confidence / Luther's Psalm. Starts, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Most famous for this line in verse 10: "Be still, and know that I am God." President Barack Obama referenced this psalm in several speeches, and Shakespeare likely left his mark on the King James translation due to a Right Place / Right Time sequence of events that had Wife jumping up and down in excitement.

Psalm 47: God Is the King of All the Earth. Starts, "O clap your hands, all ye people." This one is a little anticlimactic after Obama and Shakespeare, ngl, even with Wife's vague reference to a Sublime song.

  • Jewish Folklore (Skeptics): Episode 15
Husband and Wife continue covering Heroes:

Miracles; Part 3 of A Treasury of Jewish Folklore.

In this episode of the Sacrilegious Book Club, topics include Skeptics and Scoffers; Talmudic rationalists; ridicule as a weapon; a gay set of rogues; a lazy innkeeper; and an atheist.

Husband laughs pretty heartily in what turns out to be our favorite book club episode thus far!

Next time, we will move to part 4 and cover some entries from Heroes: Fighters and Strong Men. We hope you'll get a copy of the book and read along with us.

  • Psalms Chapters 42 - 44: Bible Study for Atheists
Husband and Wife cover Psalms 42 - 44

[[Support our Campaign to raise funds for our live broadcast equipment]] https://giveb.co/s/YOmP73

Psalm 42: Thirsting for God. Starts, "As the hart panteth after the water brooks." People are like super thirsty, so they take off their pants and drink water and eat deer hearts. Banger of an opening!

Psalm 43: A Prayer for Vindication and Deliverance. Starts, "Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation." This little dink of a psalm is merely a continuation of the one preceding it. Everyone is in mourning, as well they should be.

Psalm 44: Former Deliverances and Present Troubles. Starts, "We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us." This is a communal lamentation but it comes off less of a plea for help than a damning statement of God's many failures. There's a real MAGA vibe wherein the tribe is looking back on them good ol' days that never actually existed (because it's a dog whistle for racism and discrimination). Gross.
