Psalm 102: A Cry in Distress / A prayer of the poor man / A prayer of the afflicted. Starts, "Hear my prayer, O LORD." This is one of the seven penitential psalms. It is recited in times of community crisis, and as a prayer for the well-being of an ill person. It is also a prayer for a childless woman to give birth, unless of course that woman is in a same-sex relationship and wants ivf in which case the god of insurance companies tells her to piss off because babies are only for hetero couples who never do anything wrong and thus always deserve babies.

Psalm 103: Praise for the LORD's Benefits. Starts, "Bless the LORD, O my soul." Verse 14 is often recited during a burial service, because it reminds us that we are all just a worthless pile of ashes.

Psalm 104: The LORD's Care for His Creation. Starts, "Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great." This psalm is closely related to the first Genesis creation narrative and is thus far one of Husband's favorites due to its lack of Fire and Brimstone fear tactics. It's a lovely psalm, in large part because of its obvious relation to older creation stories from the Ancient Near East. We went down a bit of a rabbit hole and learned a new term — henotheism, which is the worship of a primary god that doesn't deny the existence of other deities. This totally summarizes early Judaism in a way we've been grappling with, and we're so happy to finally have some decent vocabulary to justify and simplify our ideas!

Psalm 100: An Exhortation to Thanksgiving / Jubilate. Starts, "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands." This is a hymn psalm, a song for a specific thanksgiving sacrifice in Solomon's Temple made in order to fulfill a vow. We gonna jubilate so damn hard when we finish Psalms. But fr!

Psalm 101: A Pledge to Live Righteously. Starts, "I will sing of mercy and judgment." This psalm provides warnings for the wicked while explaining the benefits the righteous will reap. Ugh, David is such a hypocritical creepus! It all sounds like horse feathers and applesauce to us.

  • Psalms Chapters 96 - 99: Bible Study for Atheists
Husband and Wife cover Psalms 96 - 99

[[Support our Campaign to raise funds for our live broadcast equipment]] https://giveb.co/s/YOmP73

Psalm 96: A Song of Praise. Starts, "Sing a new song unto the Lord," or "When the house was being built after the Captivity" in the Septuagint. Psalm 96 is a hymn and one of the royal psalms praising God as the King of His people. In Baptist ministry, Psalm 96 is a missionary hymn, and in Judaism, it is recited to increase joy among family members. So it's either a cudgel or a magic spell. YOU DECIDE.

Psalm 97: The LORD's Dominion and Power. Starts, "The Lord is King." This is a hymn psalm, and the Jerusalem Bible calls it an "eschatological hymn" about the End Times, as it foreshadows the messianic era when God will reign supreme over the earth.

Psalm 98: Praise for God's Righteousness. Starts, "O sing unto the Lord a new song." This is a hymn psalm, and one of the Royal Psalms, praising God as the King of His people. Psalm 98 inspired many hymns such as the classic Christmas song "Joy to the World." Andrew Lloyd Webber recently set the psalm as an anthem for the coronation of Charles III in 2023. Check it: Choir croons classic Christmas carol to creepy crowd as Cheugy Chuck cheers.

Psalm 99: The LORD's Faithfulness to Israel / A psalm of David. Starts, "The LORD reigneth." This is the last of the set of additional Royal Psalms praising God as the King of His people, as well as the last of the enthronement psalms. This psalm reveals that earth is merely an ottoman onto which God rests his big ol' stinky feets. No wonder our planet is in such dire straits!

  • Psalms Chapters 93 - 95: Bible Study for Atheists
Husband and Wife cover Psalms 93 - 95

[[Support our Campaign to raise funds for our live broadcast equipment]] https://giveb.co/s/YOmP73

Psalm 93: The Majesty of the LORD / "On the day before the Sabbath, when the earth was founded: A Psalm of thanksgiving to (or for) David." Starts, "The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty." This is the first of a series of psalms that are called royal psalms as they praise God as King. Psalm 93 is about how Adam was born on Friday and was subsequently caught partyin' - partyin' with Rebecca Black, whose song was fabulously covered 1920s-Big-Band-style by Ali Spagnola and Whitney Avalon. See video below — it's the berries!

Psalm 94: A Prayer for Vengeance. Starts, "O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongeth." God turns "Kill them with kindness" into just plain "Kill them" which is pretty immature tbh. Living well is the best revenge, but God would rather see you dance in the blood of your enemies. God is so uncool. Sky Daddy seriously needs to chillax.

Psalm 95: A Song of Praise and Worship. Starts, "O come, let us sing unto the LORD." Another David ditty, or so they say... whomever "THEY" are. We remain unconvinced.

  • Psalms Chapters 90 - 92: Bible Study for Atheists
Husband and Wife cover Psalms 90 - 92

[[Support our Campaign to raise funds for our live broadcast equipment]] https://giveb.co/s/YOmP73

Psalm 90: God's Eternity and Man's Transitoriness. Starts, "Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations." This is the opening psalm of Book 4 of the Book of Psalms. It likely influenced the opening words of Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address: "Four Score and seven years ago..." and is interesting in that the writers seem to touch grass and finally be honest about the human life span only being 70-80 years as opposed to the 120 they were trying to claim earlier.

Psalm 91: Abiding in the Shadow of the Almighty. Starts, "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High." As a psalm of protection, Psalm 91 is commonly invoked in times of hardship. And also in exorcisms and driving away evil spirits. I read the appropriate verse twice, so I hereby demand that DEMON SLAYER be inscribed on my tomb stone. So mote it be. PS — I'm still bitter that I never received a camouflage bandana imprinted with this psalm when I served in the US Army. Bastards!

Psalm 92: Praise for the LORD's Goodness. Starts, "It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD." According to the Midrash, Psalm 92 was said by Adam. Not sure how they came to that conclusion, but mmmkay. None of the rest of this book makes any sense, so why the heck not?

Husband and Wife cover Psalms 87 - 89

[[Support our Campaign to raise funds for our live broadcast equipment]] https://giveb.co/s/YOmP73

Psalm 87: The Privileges of Dwelling in Zion. Starts, "His Foundation is in the Holy Mountains." This psalm describes Jerusalem as the center of the world and is classified as one of the Songs of Zion. It's super short but packs a punch in mentioning Rahab, a mystical, demonic, chaotic, multi-headed sea-dragon representative of either The Abyss or Egypt. Forget psalms. We wanna learn more about this guy!

Psalm 88: A Prayer for Mercy and Deliverance from Death. Starts, "O LORD God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee." It was written by Heman the Ezrahite, a wise man from the time of King Solomon. This psalm is often assumed to be a Sick Psalm and stands alone for its unrelieved gloom and hopeless sorrow. So naturally, Wife wants it carved on her gravestone.

Psalm 89: God's Covenant with David. Starts, "I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever." Written by Ethan the Ezrahite, a wise man from the time of King Solomon. This psalm is sometimes referred to as a Covenant Psalm, and indeed, it goes on for a full page about how awesome God is. Boooring!

This wraps up the third of the five books in the Book of Psalms. Wheee!

Husband and Wife cover Psalms 84 - 86

Psalm 84: Longing for God's House. Starts, "How amiable are thy tabernacles." Psalm 84 begins a group of six psalms at the end of Book III (from this psalm thru Psalm 89) that attempt to provide hope to the exilic Israelite community. This psalm is sung for dedication ceremonies of buildings, churches, and altars. Here's the overall message of this psalm: "Better one day sitting on my couch than a thousand days in a pew," ... or something like that.

Psalm 85: A Prayer for God's Mercy on Israel / a psalm of returned exiles / a prayer for peace. Starts, "LORD, thou hast been favorable unto thy land." Psalm 85 is recited to express gratitude, as a prayer for a livelihood, and as a prayer for assistance in times of need. Kindness and Truth (two of the four virtues allegorized as the Daughters of God) give each other tongue baths, and artists from the Middle Ages brought the popcorn.

Psalm 86: A Prayer of David for God's Continued Mercy. Starts, "Bow down thine ear, O Lord, hear me." This psalm is the only one attributed to David in Book 3 of Psalms. It is otherwise insignificant, and thus, we have no notes.
