  • Psalms Chapters 120 - 122: Bible Study for Atheists
Husband and Wife cover Psalms 120 - 122

Psalm 120: A Prayer for Deliverance from Deceitfulness. Starts, "In my distress I cried unto the LORD, and he heard me." This is the first of 15 psalms categorized as Song of Ascents. We have no idea why they were written... much like the rest of the Bible.

Psalm 121: The LORD Is Thy Keeper. Starts, "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help." The first verse is frequently quoted to commemorate monuments and memorials inspired by mountains or hills. What would a hill have to do in order to inspire memorializing? All the best hills I know are boring af.

Psalm 122: A Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem. Starts, "I was glad." No notes, but the title makes me think of the song "Happy" by Pharrell Williams.

  • Psalms Chapter 119: Bible Study for Atheists
Husband and Wife cover Psalms 119

Psalm 119: The Excellencies of God's Law. Starts, "Blessed are the undefiled in the way." This psalm is a hymn and an acrostic poem. It is the longest psalm as well as the longest chapter in the Bible. And you guys, it really is very long. Like, the longest long ever. Lots of yackety-yack about how terrific it is to follow God's cute little precepts and laws. Every Easter, a bunch of Christian LARPers light candles, stand around a (pretend) dead body, and chant this twelve-mile-long ditty as a dirge. I'd be wailing, too, if I had to read this mess ever again.

  • Psalms Chapters 116 - 118: Bible Study for Atheists
Husband and Wife cover Psalms 116 - 118

Psalm 116: Thanksgiving for Deliverance from Death. Starts, "I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice." The psalm draws heavily from other psalms, so much so that it has been referred to by some as a "patched-up psalm." This seems to be a running theme, when recalling that there's also a psalm referred to as "the borrower," and given that each psalm kinda sounds the same.

Psalm 117: Praise for the LORD's Merciful Kindness. Starts, "O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people." Psalm 117 is the shortest psalm and also the shortest chapter in the whole Bible. If every chapter of the Bible was laid out in a row, regardless of what book it falls in, and forgetting OT versus NT, Psalm 117 is the exact middle. After three years, we've finally hit the middle chapter! Additionally, this psalm forms the introduction of the 90s pop song Happy Nation by Swedish pop group Ace of Base.

Psalm 118: Thanksgiving for the LORD's Salvation. Starts, "O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good." Psalm 118 is the last of the Jewish Hallel prayers. Also, Verse 8 pinpoints the exact middle if every verse of the Bible was laid out in a row, regardless of what book it falls in, and forgetting OT versus NT. Thus, this episode truly represents the very middlest of our Bible-reading endeavor!

  • Psalms Chapters 113 - 115: Bible Study for Atheists
Husband and Wife cover Psalms 113 - 115

Psalm 113: Praise for Exalting the Humble. Starts, "Praise ye the Lord, O ye servants of the Lord." This is the first of the six psalms comprising the Hallel, a Jewish prayer of praise and thanksgiving.

Psalm 114: The Wonders of the Exodus. Starts, "When Israel went out of Egypt." This psalm is used as a reading at Christian burial services, and also in ministry to those who are dying. Please do not read this on either of our deathbeds!

Psalm 115: God and the Idols. Starts, "Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory." This psalm was behind the motivation to create Earth Day, but it also provides the motto of the Knights Templar, so that kinda cancels itself out.

Wife first heard this song on the original (1996) Scream soundtrack. She's been waiting for the "right" (sinister) time to include this haunting tune because it's the perfect mood for our podcast, and today it's also the perfect song for such a devilish topic!

  • Psalms Chapters 110 - 112: Bible Study for Atheists
Husband and Wife cover Psalms 110 - 112

Psalm 110: The LORD Gives Dominion to the King. Starts, "The LORD said unto my Lord." Psalm 110 is the most frequently quoted or referenced psalm in the New Testament due to its weird phrasing that Christians point to as proof of the plurality of the God / Jesus. Jewish sources are a lot more chill about the whole thing and state that the subject of the psalm is either Abraham, David, or the Jewish Messiah. You know, OT people. Because it's the OT. This psalm is recited as a prayer of protection to achieve peace with enemies, if by "peace" you mean "heaping up the dead" because murder is always how one attains that zen state.

Psalm 111: The LORD's Care for His People. Starts, "Praise ye the LORD. I will praise the LORD with my whole heart." This super short psalm is an acrostic, and honestly, I don't remember what it's about because Wife went on a ridiculously lengthy rant about people being way too overly concerned with her crotch. She's not wrong.

Psalm 112: The Prosperity of Him Who Fears the LORD. Starts, "Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD." This is yet another acrostic and OOPS, there's another rant, but this time, it's about how we should be feeding the poor and needy.

  • Psalms Chapters 107 - 109: Bible Study for Atheists
Husband and Wife cover Psalms 107 - 109

[[Support our Campaign to raise funds for our live broadcast equipment]] https://giveb.co/s/YOmP73

Psalm 107: The LORD Delivers from Trouble. Starts, "O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good." Psalm 107 is a song of thanksgiving to God, who has been merciful to his people and gathered all who were lost. It is beloved of mariners due to its reference to ships and the sea. Husband and Wife give thanks unto those great gods Walt Disney and Jim Henson for teaching us that the sun rises in the east. Also, thank you for letting us thank you, listeners.

Psalm 108: A Prayer for Help against the Foe / The Warrior's Morning Song. Starts, "O give thanks unto the LORD." Psalm 108 is the OG in plagiarism and, as such, is referred to by some people as the "borrower" because it totally pirates verses from other psalms.

Psalm 109: A Cry for Vengeance / the "Judas Psalm" or the "Iscariot Psalm" / Prayer for deliverance from enemies. Starts, "Song of the Slandered." Psalm 109 is noted for containing some of the most severe curses in the Bible. Super sweet Christians like to quote from this psalm against Progressive leadership because they are excellent examples of Christ's love.

    ...in no way whatsoever.

  • Psalms Chapters 105 - 106: Bible Study for Atheists
Husband and Wife cover Psalms 105 - 106

[[Support our Campaign to raise funds for our live broadcast equipment]] https://giveb.co/s/YOmP73

Psalm 105: The LORD's Wonders in Behalf of Israel. Starts, "O give thanks unto the LORD." This psalm gives thanks for God's faithfulness to the covenant he made with Abraham. It's yet another recap of Exodus but leaves out some of the more pertinent details and glosses over what actually happened. So annoying!

Psalm 106: The Rebelliousness of Israel. Starts, "Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD." This is a psalm of penitence, reciting the history of Israel’s faithlessness and disobedience. Still MORE recap of the Exodus story, but Wife also shares her experiences with a ghost that opens doors and throws marshmallows, so #NoRegrets.

These great History Psalms end Book 4 of the Hebrew psalms, so tomorrow we'll be moving into the final Book of Psalms. We are so ready for this!

  • Psalms Chapter 78: Bible Study for Atheists
Husband and Wife go back in time to cover Psalms 78

[[Support our Campaign to raise funds for our live broadcast equipment]] https://giveb.co/s/YOmP73

Psalm 78: God's Faithfulness to His Unfaithful People / A new beginning in Zion and David. Starts, "Give ear, O my people, to my law." Psalm 78 is the first of the three great history psalms (the others being Psalms 105 and 106)

It is the second-longest Psalm, with 72 verses, and that's why we didn't get to the other two psalms we meant to read. It's basically a rehash of Exodus, but only the good parts. Just kidding — there weren't any good parts. We did learn that God got drunk and fell asleep, which explains why he disappears for great stretches.
