Daron was born in Petrolia, Texas, to the late Orbie L. and Alma Bernice Kirchner Reedy. In 1940, Daron "Diamond Jim" Reedy, at age 18, joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and applied for pilot training in 1942. In 1943, he deployed to the Pacific Theater in New Guinea. He flew 158 strafing missions, survived four plane crashes, jungle fever and malaria. After the war, he became the Commanding Officer of the Texas National Guard in Belton. Daron was a storyteller and loved to tell about his World War II experiences and flying his P-39.

🛫 Entry into the Army Air Corps

Daron M. Reedy entered military service in 1940, before the United States formally entered World War II. At that time the U.S. aviation arm was still known as the United States Army Air Corps, the predecessor to the later Army Air Forces and eventually the modern U.S. Air Force. His early enlistment placed him among the pre-war expansion generation of American airmen, who began training as the United States rapidly built up its military capabilities in response to the growing global conflict. These early volunteers formed the foundation of the wartime aviation force that would expand dramatically after 1941.

🧒👦 Family and Military Tradition

The Reedy family contributed more than one serviceman to the American war effort during World War II. Daron’s brother, Walton B. Reedy, served as a U.S. Army infantry officer and eventually reached the rank of captain. Walton fought in several major Pacific campaigns, including Saipan and Okinawa, and later participated in the occupation of Japan. The presence of multiple brothers in wartime service was common in American families during the 1940s and reflected a broad national mobilization. The Reedy family’s contribution demonstrates the degree to which local Texas families became directly connected to the global conflict.

🐣 Early Life in Central Texas

Daron M. Reedy grew up in the rural community surrounding Belton in Bell County, Texas, during the early twentieth century. He was the son of O. L. Reedy and his wife, members of a locally rooted family typical of central Texas agricultural communities of the period. The region around Belton was characterized by farming, ranching, and small-town commerce, and young men from the area often developed strong ties to community institutions such as churches, schools, and local civic groups. Reedy attended New Hope High School, suggesting he spent his formative years within this tight-knit rural educational system. His upbringing occurred during the Great Depression era, a time that shaped many future servicemen through economic hardship and strong community bonds.
