Jesus is a powerful preacher. Three weeks ago He was preaching at the synagogue in Nazareth, the town where He grew up. Two weeks ago He was preaching in the synagogue in Capernaum, where a demoniac interrupted His sermon. Last Sunday He borrowed Peter’s fishing boat and turned it into a floating pulpit. Today we hear Jesus preach His Sermon on the Mount – although Luke’s version is often called the Sermon on the Plain. Jesus declares His disciples to be “blessed” four times. Then Jesus says “woe” four times. How do the blesseds and the woes fit together with each other? What is Jesus saying to us today?
