In the summer of 2003, I drove through Hungry Valley, Nevada, a town so small it didn't even have a stoplight. At the edge of town, past the boarded-up gas station and the rusted grain silo, I found the skeleton of a drive-in movie theater. The screen was still standing, pale and pockmarked, and in the dirt below it someone had built a small shrine: a child's sneaker, a half-melted candle, a photograph of a woman with dark hair. I asked around town—the old man at the diner, the girl at the motel desk—and every answer was the same: don't go back there after dark. But I did. And what I saw projected on that screen wasn't a movie. It was a memory. A memory that didn't belong to me. A memory that was still happening. And I knew, somehow, that the woman in the photograph was watching, too, and that she had been watching for a very long time.

Luna pulls off Route 66 at three in the morning, chasing a rumor about a diner that never closed — even after the town around it vanished. The waitress calls herself June, but her uniform is from 1957. The coffee is hot, the pie is fresh, and the jukebox plays only one song on a loop. Luna learns what it means to be the last customer, and why the door doesn't lock from the inside. A slow-burn encounter with a hunger that doesn't end.

December 1997, just outside Blythe, California. A crooked family-run Christmas tree lot on a dirt turnout off the interstate. I stopped for a tree and met an old man who told me about his daughter, who disappeared from that same lot eleven years earlier, on a night so cold the irrigation pipes froze solid. He kept her tree every year — a blue spruce that never dropped a needle. He showed me the shrine he built for her behind the rows of pines: a small white wooden structure with an open door, a single bare bulb inside, and a child's winter coat hanging from a hook. He said sometimes he hears the coat move, like someone shrugging it on. I asked if he ever found her. He said, 'I don't need to. She finds me.' I didn't sleep well for a week after. This is a story about grief that refuses to end, about the things we build to hold what we've lost, and about a little girl in a red coat who might still be trying to come home.

On a wind-scoured November night in Needles, California, I found myself at a self-storage facility called Desert Keep, a maze of identical orange doors on the edge of town. My cousin's widow, Carla, had asked me to clear out his unit—paid up for ten years, never opened. I expected old furniture, maybe a boat engine. What I found was a single metal shelf, a mason jar of salt water, and a thin notebook filled with my cousin's handwriting. The entries started hopeful—he'd bought the unit to store his late wife's things—but quickly turned obsessive. He began visiting every night, measuring something I couldn't see, drawing diagrams of the walls. The last entry said 'I am almost through. The space between is thinner here.' I took the jar home, and now, weeks later, I have started to measure my own walls. I am drawing the same diagrams. I haven't told anyone. But I think the salt water is evaporating faster than it should.

Luna drives through the Oklahoma panhandle in late October, chasing a story about a girl who vanished into a sinkhole three years ago. The town of Bitterwell has a small white shrine at the edge of the hole, but the locals say the hole is hungry. Luna meets an old man who sits there every night, waiting for the girl to come back. He tells her the hole is not a hole—it's a mouth. Luna stays until dawn, and she hears something from the darkness below. Not a scream. A whisper. And it knows her name.

Luna recounts a night in the summer of 2017, when she pulled off Interstate 10 near a forgotten junction called Salton Peak, drawn by a small white shrine she had spotted on a ridge. The trailer belonged to a woman named Delia, who had been gone for months—left behind were photographs, a journal, and a collection of mirrors arranged in a circle on the floor. Luna stayed until the sun came up, reading pages about a visitor who came at twilight, a figure made of static and heat shimmer, and a prayer that was never meant to be answered. The desert is vast, and some doors open both ways. This is a story about listening too closely to the silence, and what listens back.

A woman in a small town laundromat at 3 AM meets a stranger who seems to know her dead mother's secrets. The stranger leaves a single shell on the folding table, and from then on the washing machines never stop humming the same old song. Luna pieces together what happened in the desert town of Painted Springs, where the washateria stays open all night and the salt flats creep closer every year.

In the summer of 2019, Luna drove out past the ghost town of Fillmore, Nevada, to a dry basin where ranchers once prayed for rain. She found a cistern that had been sealed with concrete, and beside it, a small white shrine holding not candles or flowers, but a single child's shoe, a coil of hair, and a note written in a language she could not read. This is the story of what she found when she pried the seal loose, and what the night taught her about thirst, faith, and the things we offer when no one is watching. A quiet, slow-burn encounter with something that waits in the dark, patient as the salt.

Luna stops at a small white shrine on the outskirts of Elko, Nevada, in the dry heat of August. The shrine marks where a thirteen-year-old girl named Celia vanished during the summer of 1997. The details of that night—the cicadas, the slamming screen door, the footprints that ended at the ditch—are still fresh in the memory of her older brother, who Luna speaks with at the Elko Diner. He tells her about the letters that started arriving a year later, postmarked from towns that didn't exist. Luna walks the ditch line at dusk and finds something she can't explain: a single shoe, impossibly preserved, and the sound of water where there is none. A quiet story about grief that refuses to settle, and the places where the boundary between gone and waiting grows thin.

Luna recounts a shift she worked in the summer of 2019 at a diner just outside the salt flats, where the graveyard crew learned to stop asking about the woman who came in at 3:33 a.m. She always ordered black coffee and a slice of cherry pie, left a tip in old silver coins, and sat in the same booth under the buzzing fluorescent light. But one night, the cook followed her out to the parking lot, and what he saw changed the way the whole town looked at the salt. This is a story about the thin membrane between hunger and memory, and the places where the dead still follow their old habits.
