There is a newer trend of placing roadside memorials where a tragic accident has taken place. If we were placing historical markers at the place of death throughout the land of Israel, we would place one at Meggido to mark the spot where one of the good kings of Judah died - Josiah.  Josiah, which means "whom Jehovah heals," was known for one of the great revivals that led Israel back to the worship of Jehovah. How do we return to the Lord? We realize we have strayed. We read God's Word. We repent and renew our minds. We remove wrong things and practices. We restore right practice.

This week, we journeyed to the Precipice of Nazareth and studied Luke 4:16-30 when Jesus was rejected and drove out of Nazareth. There are three practical applications from this passage:

1. Don't be surprised when the world comes at you unjustly.

2. Don't give up and don't quit.

3. Don't get side tracked by the temporal, but focus on the eternal.

There will be days we will find ourselves tired, weary, discouraged, and in despair. But, Elijah's story in 1 Kings 19 helps us to know that we too can handle days we find ourselves in despair.

The conclusion of our stop at Mount Carmel. 1 Kings 16:29-17:24. The LORD Almighty calls His people to live by faith in a faithless world. Elijah is an example of a person who lived "by faith."

This week, our journey through Israel took us to Caeserea Maritima on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, where Paul finds himself in chains preaching the gospel before King Agrippa. Acts 26:29 records Paul speaking to King Agrippa in the presence of a large crowd, saying, "Short time or long - I pray to God that not only you but all who are listening to me today may become what I am, except for these chains." We see three main points from this passage: Outlook, Opportunity, and Obedience. Though Paul found himself in chains, his outlook was of happiness and joy. Though Paul was facing trials, he saw an opportunity to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus. Though Paul was called crazy, he chose obedience to the call and message of Jesus Christ. 

Last week we heard about Jonah's disobedience. This week we heard of Paul's obedience. What will you choose for your life?

In the city of Joppa, we see the story of Jonah unfold. Through this story of a rebellious prophet and a ruthless people we come face to face with a reconciling God. Jonah's story is not too unfamiliar to the question before us today, "When God calls us to do something, will we do it?" Will we step up to the plate and be carriers of the Gospel or will we flee in the opposite direction?

1 Peter 5:12-14

Verse 14 says, "Greet one another with a holy kiss." In our modern culture, this is a verse that can be easily overlooked and dismissed, but this verse gives us a glimpse into the affection believers are to have for one another in the body of Christ. We may not use a kiss, but how are we encouraging, loving, and uniting with one another in the body of Christ because we are the family of God.

1 Peter 5:8-11

As the apostle Peter wraps up his first letter to the church he offers five final charges! We would do well to hear and heed the old Christian general's admonition.
