In this sermon for the Third Sunday of Advent, Pastor Chris explores the connection between two seemingly opposite themes: Repentance and Rejoicing. What we see is that these two concepts are not opposites but two sides of the same coin, both calling us to prepare for the coming of the Lord.
Drawing from Luke 3:7-18, we begin by considering John the Baptist’s call for repentance, urging us to turn from sin and produce fruit in our lives that aligns with God’s will. But the Advent message doesn’t stop there. We also learn from the prophets Zephaniah and Isaiah, who call us to rejoice because the Lord is coming to restore all things. In the face of hardship and exile, the people of God are promised salvation, and we, too, can find joy in the hope that Christ brings.
As we await the coming of Christ this Advent, let us embrace both sides of the coin: to repent and rejoice—for the Lord is near!
