  • Grace Truly - BOOK CLUB: The Next Chapter - Episode 117

Today on Salt Lake Dirt I speak with actress Grace Truly. Grace appears in the new film Book Club: The Next Chapter (Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen). Grace has appeared in several short films and has also appeared in Downton Abbey: A New Era.

I had an amazing time talking with Grace about Book Club as well as her interests in vintage clothing, sewing, photography, and classic film. Grace is definitely someone to keep an eye out for. I can't wait to see more of her work in the future!

    Thanks for listening.

      • FIFTH - Terrible Twos - Episode 116

I fortunate enough to have the Bay Area rapper FIFTH join me on Salt Lake Dirt just one day after the release of his album Terrible Twos (Released 5.5.23)

I've been listening to it non-stop. For a literary and film podcast like SLD, the conversation I had with FIFTH fits in perfectly.

Make sure to check out Taking Chances, a short film about FIFTH and the making of Terrible Twos.

        Incredible artist! Great chat!

        Thanks for listening.

          • Gary Lassin - A TOUR DE FARCE - The Three Stooges - Episode 115

I'm absolutely thrilled to welcome Gary Lassin to the show. Gary is the president of the Three Stooges Fan Club and the author of the new book A Tour De Farce: The Complete History of the Three Stooges on the Road. The fan club and ultimately Gary, are responsible for my love of early era comedians and classic Hollywood. I joined the club in my early teens. It was amazing being able to connect with him after nearly all these years.

The book is an epic work of meticulous research (Over 700 pages). It's a complete history of the Stooges' touring life. When they weren't making films they spent huge chunks of the year touring their act around the United States. This book documents it all and has never before seen photos of the comedy trio.

A Tour De Farce is an incredible labor of love and I am extremely grateful that Gary brought it into existence.

            Thanks for listening!

Today I welcome author John Derderian to the show. I became aware of John's work through Stephen Jay Schwartz. If Stephen recommends something, I know it's going to be good. That was definitely the case with John's short story collection Starbucks Must Die and Other Stories.

Great book, great chat! I'm looking forward to reading his next collection of short stories entitled Schrödinger Scat and Other Tales.

Today I welcome back Michelle Bossy to the show. I first talked to Michelle back in 2021 when her film Under the Lantern Lit Sky played at the Brooklyn Film Festival. That film was one of my favorites from 2021 so I was thrilled when I heard that she had two short films currently playing the festival circuit. In this episode we discuss Early Retirement and Antisemite - two powerful films that you’ll want to keep on your radar. Great films, great chat! I look forward to having Michelle back on in the future.

                    Synopsis:

"The life of Gordon Zahler was simply so miraculous that it might as well have been science fiction.  Born into an entertainment family in suburban Los Angeles in the mid-1920s, Zahler was a lovable prankster and class clown, exasperating his parents with his endless teenage feats of derring-do. But Gordon Zahler's promising career as a public miscreant went pear-shaped one day in 1940 when he and his buddies where fooling around in their high school gym with a spring board.  An unsteady jump no the board vaulted Gordon on a deadly trajectory landing him squarely on his neck, severing his spine. He was 14-years old. That's when the miracles began."

                              Book Synopsis:

"A darkly funny meditation on creativity and family, Be Brief and Tell Them Everything tracks the life of a middle-aged author who is struggling to write his next novel while trying to come to grips with his son’s disabilities, set against a backdrop of ecological catastrophe and escalating human insanity in contemporary Los Angeles. A beautiful, powerful, concise work of autofiction that is reminiscent of My Struggle and Grief is the Thing with Feathers, Be Brief documents the stops and starts of adulthood and marriage, and the joys and challenges of parenting, while defining what it means to be a good man, and a good writer."
