In this episode of Salute the Songbird, Maggie is joined by Lake Street Dive artists Rachael Price and Bridget Kearney. The pair share the story of how they met and formed the band, the things that make them work so well together, and what they love about being women in the music industry.

As a band, Lake Street Dive epitomizes democracy in action: the group, expanded into a quintet since touring keyboardist Akie Bermiss officially joined in 2017, share writing and arrangement duties. Their personalities, skills, and wide-ranging taste in pop, rock, R&B, and jazz have long blended together to make an impressively cohesive sound, both sophisticated and playful, combining retro influences with contemporary attitude. On its most recent Nonesuch album, 2018’s Free Yourself Up, the band even produced the record itself.

This week, singer-songwriter Brittney Spencer joins Maggie to talk about pursuing a career in country music, her approach to songwriting, and what it's like to live a creative life in public. The two discuss the experience of moving into the Nashville scene from Maryland, and Brittney explains what she wants her audience to get from listening to her music.

Brittney Spencer is paving her own path in the country music genre and making major waves in the process. A PEOPLE Magazine One to Watch, 2021 Spotify Hot Country Artist to Watch, Pandora 2021 Artist to Watch and member of CMT Next Women of Country, the Baltimore native is known for her free spirit and standout ability to mold life, truth and wild imagination into songs. Her recent single “Sober & Skinny” has garnered praise from The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and more, as well as an in-depth interview with CBS Mornings’ Anthony Mason. Lauded as one of “12 Black Artists Shaping Country Music’s Future” by USA Today and named one of “5 Black Artists Rewriting Country Music” by The Recording Academy, Spencer has grown a robust fan base on the road, lining up her own debut headlining trek, 'In A Perfect World Tour,' which kicks off in December.

GRAMMY nominated singer-songwriter Yola joins Maggie to talk about defining herself on her own terms, the diverse influences that can be found in her music, and her dedication to advocating for others. Yola shares the story of the song she wrote the night of her mother’s funeral and why Womanhood is the best squad to be a part of. 

Yola released her critically acclaimed debut album Walk Through Fire in February 2019. Nine months later, she achieved breakout success, hailed as a Black British genre fluid rising star, landing four GRAMMY® nominations including Best New Artist, garning critical acclaim and fans from Elton John to Mavis Staples. Her anthemic new album Stand for Myself was released July 30, produced by Dan Auerbach, it is a sonic mix of symphonic soul and classic pop tracing a musical thread to Yola’s most eclectic musical inspirations. It declares that it is only when we stand for ourselves, and acknowledge our complexity, that we can be truly alive. Yola is one of few artists to have performed at both Newport Folk and Newport Jazz in the same year, she will also be joining select dates with Chris Stapleton on his rescheduled tour in 2021 and will headline The Ryman Auditorium in 2022. Yola will play Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Baz Luhrmann’s musical drama exploring the life of Elvis, played by Austin Butler, alongside Tom Hanks, Kelvin Harrison Jr and Alton Mason.

A passionate advocate, Nicole proudly serves as President of 501(c)3 non-profit organization, Women in Music, where she joined the Board of Directors in 2013 and has helped usher in record growth since becoming President in 2019. She serves on the Executive Board of Music Managers Forum (US), the largest and leading trade organization for music managers in the U.S.

After meeting at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Wolfe and Laessig moved to Brooklyn and made their debut with 2013’s Wildewoman. Their sophomore album Good Grief arrived in 2016, encompassing everything from glitzy rhythmic pop to songs channeling the charm and crushed innocence of ’60s girl groups. They now reside in Los Angeles.

Singer-songwriter Jade Bird joins Maggie to talk about her approach to songwriting, where she draws her inspiration from, and why social media can adversely affect creativity. Jade explains how she developed her sound, and why she often prefers to write without a collaborator.

Jade’s powerful voice offers a winsome mix of folk, pop, and rustic Americana. While still in her teens she joined the roster of influential indie Glassnote Records, which released her chart-topping 2019 debut album. Working with Grammy Award-winning producer Dave Cobb, she delivered her follow-up, Different Kinds of Light, in 2021.

Jeannie Seely is one of the most accomplished, influential women in music. She’s a member of the Grand Ole Opry, a Grammy winning artist and an incredible, prolific songwriter. In this episode, Maggie and Jeannie talk about being a woman in the music industry and whether things have changed since the 60’s, when she got her start. Jeannie has so many great stories and shares some of them with Maggie during the conversation, including her collaboration with Randy Newman, friendship with the legendary Dottie West, and more. 

Along with many accolades including awards from Billboard, Cashbox and Record World, country music legend Jeannie Seely has achieved No. 1 songs as a solo artist, duet partner and songwriter. Early in her career, Jeannie’s deeply moving vocals aptly earned her the nickname of “Miss Country Soul”. Jeannie’s recording of “Don’t Touch Me” not only topped the country music charts, but also earned her a Grammy Award for the “Best Country Vocal Performance by a Female”. It is ranked at No. 97 in the book Country Music’s 500 Greatest Singles published by the Country Music Foundation, and it’s also included in The Stories Behind Country Music’s All-Time Greatest 100 Songs. Her latest album, An American Classic, was released in August 2020.

Maggie Rose is joined by artist and musician Hannah Hooper, who is the frontwoman of Grouplove. Hannah tells Maggie about the life stories behind Grouplove’s albums, why they work so well together as a band, and finding her voice and passion through performing.

Hannah Hooper is an American artist and musician based out of Atlanta. Her work deals with a diverse array of subject matter including tragic pop culture figures, claustrophobic beach/crowd scenes and strange figures distorted through bodies of water. As the frontwoman of Grouplove, Hannah has also taken on the role of art director for the band. Her work adorns virtually all of the albums, posters, merch and even the costume and stage design.

Grammy-nominated Shannon McNally is a prolific, wide ranging singer-songwriter whose recent album, The Waylon Sessions, revisits the songs of Waylon Jennings. Shannon tells Maggie about putting the album together with some of Waylon’s former bandmates and the many musicians who were influenced by his music. The two discuss the early days of her career, the collaborations with artists like Dr John and Charlie Sexton that have contributed to her rich musical catalog, and Shannon shares her perspective on the power of being a woman in the music industry.

Over her nearly twenty year career, McNally has produced a long catalog and longer list of peers with whom she has written, recorded and toured. Her music career began on the jam band circuit of the 1990’s with bands like Robert Randolph and Derek Trucks. She writes as well as she interprets the songs of others, has a top tier musicality to her craft, a soul stirring voice that immediately grabs one by the heart strings and a troubadour’s wanderlust, not to mention as it turns out, and is also an excellent electric guitar player.
