Education in Australia…. where is it heading?

Kulasegaram Sanchayan reports in Tamil with two features written by SBS News Desk.

The first is on the cost of education by Abby Dinham, who says that new figures from the Australian Scholarships Group suggest the price of educating children has risen significantly over the past decade, with private school costs rising by over 60 per cent.

The Group says parents are reporting major increases, and the school fees are just the beginning.

The later by Sunil Awasthi, who argues that new figures show university dropout rates across Australia are getting worse.  One-third of students are failing to finish their course within six years.

January has been declared as Tamil Heritage Month by the Canadian Government.  Kulasegaram Sanchayan presents the story, with the individual who was instrumental in passing this legislation, Garry Anandasangari.

The Sri Venkateswara Temple at Helensburgh in Sydney, Australia is one of the famous Hindu temples in the southern hemisphere. The temple is managed by Sri Venkateswara Temple Association which was formed in 1978. In its almost 40 years of history, the management committee comes under criticism by some of its members.  SBS Tamil brought the story on the Criticisms and the committee’s response last week, and promised to update the listeners on the outcome of the AGM.  Kulasegaram Sanchayan reports.

US President Barack Obama has delivered his farewell address, urging Americans to defend their democracy.During the address in Chicago, Mr Obama warned democracy is threatened whenever people take it for granted.

He mentioned three main threats to America’s democracy – economic inequality, racial divisions and the tendency for people to retreat into their own bubbles.

Jallikattu has been practised for thousands of years in Tamil Nadu. But in 2014 the sport was outlawed by the Supreme Court following objections from animal rights activists who say it is cruel. However, political parties and people in Tamil Nadu are urging the central government to intervene to enable the conduct of Jallikattu events in Tamil Nadu by denotifying bulls from the list of performing animals in a notification. Tamil youth in Sydney organised an event today (13 Jan) to show their solidarity with the people in Tamil Nadu.
