Sean played for five NFL teams, was a star at USC and became best known as an analyst of ESPN. But hard times came to Sean and his career and he found himself at a crossroads when he met someone on the side of the freeway who was even more down on his luck.

There’s a quote by the management consultant W. Edwards Deming that goes like this:

“Every system is perfectly designed to get the results it gets.”

Basically that means in our personal lives, in our homes and in our business lives, the results we are getting are the result of systems that we have set up either on purpose or by accident.

Today I wanted to talk a little bit about imposter syndrome and how one of the best sports stories going right now shows how amazing belief in yourself, your abilities and your success can be. 

Brock Purdy, quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers just won his first playoff game. This is a guy who started as the third string quarterback, was the very last pick in the draft, is only 23 years old and yet he is playing like one of the best quarterbacks in football. 

So many of us struggle with feeling a bit like a fraud when we are successful at something. But not Brock Purdy. This guy oozes confidence and swagger, and why shouldn’t he? He’s in the NFL, that means he is supremely talented. No one achieves success by accident. 

So take a page from Brock Purdy’s book and believe in yourself and believe that you are exactly where you should be in those moments of great success.

Today I talk about how to seek out opportunities and take advantage of them when they come. When you get that chance you have to pull the trigger and be decisive, planning is for the times when you are waiting for an opportunity, so you can take action when it comes. 

You also have to continue to raise your own bar of expectancy. If you are complacent, if you are not looking to grow and achieve more, opportunities will not find you. You also need to be clear on your vision, culture and values so that you don’t chase things that don’t fit your own goals and values.

Today I am talking about how to tell the difference between an opportunity or a distraction. This can be very tricky in life and in business because we never want to give up a good opportunity that comes our way but it is also so easy to chase an idea that doesn’t fit our goal. Or to accept someone’s suggestion or idea for change because it seems easy or beneficial. 

Listen for some of my tips and experience of being bogged down by distractions or misreading situations as opportunities that turned out to be a waste of time. And don’t let opportunities pass you by but analyze them carefully first to make sure they aren’t fool’s gold.

This week I’m talking about opportunities. How to capitalize on them and recognize them when they come along. Sometimes opportunities come along that look like hardships and that was very true for the great Doris Day. 

Doris Day was a famous actress, dancer and singer. When she was young all her focus was on dancing until a near fatal car accident caused her to suffer a broken leg. While in the hospital Doris started singing to pass the time, idolizing and imitating Ella Fitzgerald. She discovered she had an excellent voice and went on to have an amazing career as an actress and singer with numerous hits. 

Without that terrible accident Doris Day may have solely focused on dancing, robbing herself and all of us of her beautiful voice. So if you are suffering through a hard time right now or the next time you are disappointed, try to see how you can turn that obstacle into an opportunity.

Today I give you the last four tips this week for starting a new goal or project. These four suggestions are for when you have begun your journey and you are hitting rough spots along the way. 

1. Be flexible: no matter how well laid out your plan is, things change, new information is revealed and you have to adapt to succeed.
2. Accept that failure is part of the process.
3. Make time to do things you love and are good at: taking time to continue with activities that give you confidence because you are proficient at them can help boost your confidence through a new learning process.
4. Celebrate the milestones along the way.

Today I go through four more tips when you are embarking on a new venture. These tips are mostly still part of the investigative phase of working on a new goal or project. 

1. Build your team: this can mean hiring people or just finding someone to work with who has the same goal. 
2. Try other new things: research shows that eating new food, reading new books, watching a new show can spark creativity in other areas of our lives.
3. Write a personal mission statement: be clear and intentional about the purpose of your new goal.
4. Use the experience of others: Someone has already achieved your goal. Find them and ask them how they got there.

Happy New Year! What better time to talk about new beginnings than the first week of the new year. Lots of you out there may decide to make resolutions or make changes so I decided to spend this week talking about how to set yourself up for success when starting something new.

1. Make a decision-consider if this change or goal is something you REALLY want
2. You have to STOP doing things that will get in the way
3. What will the cost be in money, time and education
4. Don’t go out and over-invest in new equipment
