WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - CF-22 got the top coat of a lighter grey but I am not happy with the med grey I put on the wings. May be going back to the original lighter grey.
Trying some more painting experiments on several Battletech miniatures.
[foogallery id="3826"]
Terry: Some moderate progress on the Moosaroo Cup preparations. Progressing on the 1/72 Destroid Tomahawk. The joints get painted grey, so they have to be done and masked before the tan body bits can be painted.
[foogallery id="3829"]
John - Newer tool 71 Revell Olds 442 I got away from Cars for a while and I am enjoying getting back into it.
Xwing in progress, F4F wildcats. And other things that keep calling me from the stash.

Rob Riviezzo
I'm Rob Riviezzo, I'm from Long Island, NY. I've been building models since I was a small boy, probably around 6 or 7 years old when I used to sit with my dad while he made his HO scale train set. Took a break while in my teens and got back into the hobby around 21 after my mother fell ill and I was looking to get my mind off of all the craziness. I primarily build armour models, focused on mostly German and Russian WWII. I will also build the occasional modern armour subject or Sci Fi model like Gundam, or Star Wars. I am a very active member of Amps (Gotham Amps) and my local IPMS chapter (The Long Island Scale Model Society). I started the Modeling Insanity Podcast in May of 2023 after the Modeling Miscreant Podcast which I was a Co-Host on fell through. I am also now the Associate US Editor of Military Modelcraft International which is the largest English speaking Armor Military magazine in the world. I am a monthly contributor and reviewer for the magazine. I am known for my photo-etch and scratchbuilding.

James Morando
I’m writing now because our local club, IPMS Santa Rosa, will be hosting a show on October 12, 2024 and I wanted to ask if you could please include our show during any upcoming model show “shoutouts" on your podcast.
We are very excited about this year's show. This year we will be adopting an Open/GSB judging format for the first time. In fact I’m pretty sure this will be the very first show ever to use an open judging format in the IPMS Region 9, which encompasses Northern California and Nevada. So we’ll be making a little history! With that in mind, the theme of our show will be “Evolution.”
I have attached our show flyer below but the pertinent information is that: It will be held from 9-4 pm on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at the Rohnert Park Community Center in Rohnert Park, California. Free admission and $12 entry fee for first 3 models. Lots of great vendors are lined up, we will have a terrific raffle, will be doing a build and take table and then the Open/GSB judging. We are also asking folks to bring kits and model building supplies to the show for donation to support our charity initiative for Help Heal Veterans, a wonderful organization that provides free theraputic kits and modeling supplies to veterans.

Hi Stuart,
Paul Redding
Just to say I am following your Tamiya 1/350 build with interest as I bought the 1/450 Hasegawa version earlier this month as part of a carrier / IJN aircraft rabbit hole I went down...I have steered clear of anything Japanese all my modeling life but finally, curiosity got the better of me and I caved. Lots of research on IJN aircraft and how it all got built up resulted in about 18 aircraft kits...doh! Luckily there were some sales on including the canopy masks so that helped...
I haven't built any warships before (except Airfix Victorious in 1/600 in the 60s as my father was on it in the Fleet Air Arm as a flight engineer bringing the aircraft up on deck and have pics of it in Sydney Harbour (see attached). You can also see its' sister ship Illustrious and maybe you / Geoff can identify the aircraft on board - Martlets? One photo shows an aircraft that seems to have stuffed it into the tower. I seem to have ended up with quite a few carriers as I also get sucked into watching docos on PBS America which is fatal
A doco on the scuttling of the ships at Scarpa Flow and the film Sink The Bismark didn't help either so that ended up with a few more purchases; I can't see the detail in 1/700 so minimum is 1/450 or the usual 1/350
Like you I try to stay away from PE but have bought a few railing kits and also for the radar arrays/antenna if not included; plus the wooden deck sets and a couple of brass barrel sets for Prince Eugen...
I also concur with your plan to paint common parts on the sprues and build in sub-assemblies ( I have been doing this for my model railway wagon kits in batches of 4 or 6 - makes for alot simpler build)
I am mentally prepared for a ship build; after 1/48 aircraft and 1/24 cars, its going to be very different.
Hope the extended break allows y'all to recharge and come back rested - I build for the relaxation like I did all those years ago pre-internet and do it to my own standards ie no interest/point in trying to achieve the standards of some of the professional kit builders out there on YT or the forums

Topic - The state of publishing magazines from Rob’s view
**************************************
WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Not a ton of time but finished Yamato and started a 1/72 Italeri F-22 which will be made into a what-if CF-22. Also helping a club member with the estate of a fellow modeler. Lots of stuff to deal with.
Geoff - two “request” builds on the go. My brother wanted a ceiling hanger for his cottage, so I Pulled a 1/48 Revell DC3 from the stash to paint as a fire spotter plane, with custom decals by club member Pablo! The same brother also asked me to build a F-16CJ block 50 for a retiring USAF pilot who is married to his good friend's daughter. Been very busy!
Terry -
Off the bench: Yamato Dreadnaughts and P-47H. On the bench: Moosaroo Cup items. Working on something nice, getting all the bits together. Also trying to get the Crusher Joe Harpy finished up. Mostly I’m getting things out of the way now, either finished or stored so I have space for the Moosarro diorama.
Rob - currently painting the Bronco Panzer III A for the second part of a 2 part article for Military Modelcraft International. The build was in the September issue of the magazine. Also working on reviews for Resin Tech Model (RTM) for their KV and SU-100Y. Lastly working on the 1/16th Stug III G for Boresight, the Amps club magazine.

WHAT WE ARE READING
Stuart - The Times: How the Newspaper of Record Survived Scandal, Scorn, and the Transformation of Journalism by Adam Nagourney
Geoff - The Hunters, by James Salter. A 1956 novel about F86 Sabre pilots in the Korean War.
Terry - Completed Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Final Architecture. Very satisfying, a big involved experience. He follows the same characters through the series, and it seems like he really came to love some characters who were initially just support characters. Reading a few informal series now, but I have some nonfiction on the deck, Steve Brusette’s Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs. Also reading the Cimarrean Conan graphic novel.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - A bit more work on the Yamato, but it has been a ‘real life’ 2 weeks with too many other things going on.
I did take advantage of the sale at Broughdales.
Geoff - a little more work on the Goblin, but mostly real-life chores and getting the place ready for summer.
Terry - the P-47H is languishing a bit, I have been more enthusiastic about the Yamato Dreadnaughts and Crusher Joe Harpy. Painting moving along really nicely on those, now the Dreadnaughts move into masking preparing for more painting. Used the complimentary color priming at Anthony’s suggestion on the Mars pattern Dreadnaught.

WHAT WE ARE READING
Stuart - Clear Thinking: Turning Ordinary Moments into Extraordinary Results by Shane Parrish and D-Day by Martin Gilbert.
Geoff - The Dambusters Raid by John Sweetman, and The Guns of Normandy by George Blackburn
Terry - Getting near the end of Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Shards of Earth - I’ll read the rest of the series in sequence. His storytelling is as good as ever, with believable characters, pretty much all of whom have a compelling point of view. Also started the Hellboy Omnibuses (Omnibi?). I actually think I haven’t read these before, somehow. Maybe excerpts?

Geoff - Worked on the Special Hobby 1/48 XF 85 Goblin. A bit of a challenge… Also managed to get my chainsaw mill working on some logs that have been drying for a few years, and did a lot of outdoor chores!
Terry - Working on those EDF Dreadnaughts, they will have some challenging paint schemes, and I’m trying something new - a complimentary color basing on the Mars ship. XP-47H is moving along, I really want to get this finished. Otherwise, figuring out what other half-finished projects need attention.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Started on the Tamiya 1/350 Yamato, the mould is from 1973. The plan is to build it out of the box with just an aftermarket wood deck. Started working on the hanger deck crane and hanger deck doors.
[foogallery id="3728"]
Geoff - masking and painting on the Martin Mars waterbomber, the Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft and shuttle and a 1/48 V2, but just starting a 1/48 XF-85 Goblin.
Terry - A lot of work done these past two weeks, since Toshi is getting me up around 5:15. The Regult is getting decals and detail painting. The XP-47H is now in dull coat with some pastel work. I hope to have it finished the week after Wonderfest. I’m starting to paint the Yamato Dreadnaughts, with some fresh AV Game Air paints. Also, since I’ll be painting red I’ve started putting paint on a Crusher Joe Harpy fighter which has been awaiting paint for the better part of a year. Productivity!

Stuart - Work continues on the CF-15 what if. Hasegawa does the engine nozzles as five separate parts each. I have lost one to the floor monster so I will be looking for either 3d print or after-market replacements.
Geoff - continuing on getting the Martin Mars and the NASA shuttle carrier aircraft and shuttle in 1/144 ready for paint. Ordered decals for the 747 from Drawdecal and the shuttle from Lake County Spaceport.
Terry - Some progress on my open projects, I’ll get the landing gear on the P-47 and do some minor weathering before dullcoating, then I’ll probably mostly use pastels for further weathering. I just want the Regult off my bench. I need to get the decals on that.
Frank - Mirror Models Komsomolets T-20 Tractor - started this last week and the interior tub was painted tonight - engine, etc. I made some cloth-looking seat pads as per reference images. Also painted a 1/72 ICM BM-24-12 kit, I picked up 4 at AMPS, got a new Grad but got 3 from the mid-90s. It looks okay…the rocket bed is rough and i’d recommend scratch if you want it to sing

Stuart - Clear Thinking: Turning Ordinary Moments into Extraordinary Results by Shane Parrish
Slow Productivity: The Lost Art of Accomplishment Without Burnout by Cal Newport
Geoff - “The Better Angels of Our Nature” by Steven Pinker. Good, factual survey of history establishes that despite what some people seem to think, violence in the West is at a historic low point.
Also “Spies in the Sky” by Taylor Downing - a history of aerial intelligence in WW2.
Terry - Finished Madeleine Murray’s Song of Achilles. It’s brilliant. She really brings the Greek characters to life, all these legendary names. I started to wonder how she would finish the story, since the narrator Patroclus must die before Achilles. The end will bring you to tears. What next? The 18th volume of That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime, so that’s a background read. I have some nonfiction to choose from.
Frank - Reading Book 2 of the Theodore Roosevelt bio by Edmund Morris - Theodore Rex and picked up Israel - A History by Martin Gilbert

I love the podcast, keep up the good work!
I was just listening to your banter with Terry about the only reason you like Special Hobbies being their tendency to keep their website up to date.
Which leads me to believe you might enjoy the website of Arcus Hobby Color, they are a long-time paint producer from Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine. They keep the website up to date with new paint releases, and include historical references, a blog and a model gallery where they do an in-depth magazine style feature on different kits finished using their paints.

Good day Stuart,
I hope you're well.
Thank you for the podcast, which is excellent.
Geoff's Zeppelin diorama was 100% fun and I am sure the actual documentary record of this event was lost/destroyed prior to Germany's defeat in World War 1.
I have attached two pictures from the latest issue of New Scientist magazine (a weekly science magazine from here in the UK, which I believe is available in Canada). The feature of interest, "The Power of Solitude" suggests our solitary hobby is good for our health if you exclude the chemicals we may be breathing in! The term used is "crafting solitude" where we carry out a meaningful solitary activity which reduces stress and anxiety and improves relaxation.
Here in the UK some doctors working in our National Health Service ( still 'free' at the point of delivery) do social prescribing linking people to activities and social groups to improve well-being. Help for Heroes has already established that model making helps with mental health.
So maybe the next time I visit my GP, I will be prescribed an Airfix model kit!
Best wishes to the team.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Real Life going on so not a ton of bench time. Some more mechs are being painted.
Starting the Hasegawa F-15J in 1/72nd. Got the front end almost done and then had to deal with a short shot in the area of the gun port.
Another RCAF what-if? Perhaps…
My order from China came in, got the Dspaie circular sander.
Geoff - Did two articles for IPMS Canada covering the Moebius Discovery and HAL kits and (of course) the completely truthful Zeppelin build, and with ALL my obligations for writing completed, I decided to start some new ones! Resurrecting old built up kits, with a resin Martin Mars water bomber and having fun with old kits, with a 1977 Revell 1/144 Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft and Space Shuttle. Also plugging away on an older 1/48 Sukhoi Su-25 and a resin 1/144X B70 Valkyrie and X108 Rapier, just because I saw them at Heritagecon and desired them - busy!
Terry - not a lot of progress, but working on numerous items. Decals done on the XP-47H, and some painting on the Regult. Plus, bits and pieces here and there on other kits. I’ve been travelling a bit, and getting other things done around the house.
Starting to work on the schedule for Wonderfest vehicle demos. Some first-time presenters again this year, plus the return of Bauble Young.

Geoff - Journeys to the Ends of the Earth by John Balchin
An Immense World by Ed Yong
Secret Projects: Flying Saucer Aircraft by Tony Butler and Bill Rose
Terry - Just starting Madeline Murray’s Song of Achilles. Her first Greek mythology book, Circe was probably the best novel I’ve read in 10 years. I have high hopes, this one follows Patroclus.
