  • SOLVED: Dorothea Puente

Through the 1980s, a landlady named Dorothea Puente ran a boarding house at 1426 F Street in Sacramento, California. Her tenants were the people nobody else would take: the elderly, the disabled, the mentally ill, and the newly homeless. Social workers who visited described her as warm and unusually attentive, the rare operator who cooked real meals. Puente also collected their mail and cashed their Social Security checks, and she was on parole, under orders to stay away from elderly people and stop handling government money. In November 1988, a social worker reported a tenant missing: Alvaro Montoya, a gentle man with intellectual disabilities who everyone called Bert. Days later, detectives started digging in the garden. In Part 1 of Murder: True Crime Stories, host Carter Roy introduces Dorothea Puente and the record of fraud and violence behind her, the boarding house she ran on other people's benefit checks, and the missing tenant whose social worker refused to accept the story she was given.

  • Reddit's Spookiest Paranormal Crime Stories

A radio turns on by itself. A voice screams a warning. A shadow crawls toward your bed. Coincidence, or something more?

Alexis Linkletter and Sabrina Deana-Roga celebrate Halloween with four of Reddit's spookiest paranormal crime stories. A young man wakes at 3 A.M. to a shadowy figure crawling toward his bed, then learns the next morning that gas had been leaking through the house all night. A woman shopping for Christmas lights comes face to face with the ghost of one of Ed Gein's victims in the same hardware store where she was killed. A woman recalls a message that screamed inside her head when she was eight years old, one that may have been tied to a real missing-child case. And in a listener submission from our subreddit, two cousins believe a lost loved one stepped in just seconds before two masked men reached their car. Alexis and Sabrina hear each other's stories for the first time as they weigh the chills, the skeptical explanations, and whether coincidence can really explain it all.

Content Warning: This episode discusses child homicide, gun violence, suicide, and an attempted home invasion. If these are sensitive topics for you, please proceed with care.

  • Nancy Moyer: The Car That Stayed in the Driveway

When Nancy Moyer's estranged husband brought their daughters to her house on the evening of Sunday, March 8th, 2009, the front door was resting open against the frame. The television was on, her car sat out front, and a half-finished glass of wine stood on the coffee table beside a second. Detectives found no forced entry, no sign of a struggle, and both glasses had only Nancy's prints on them. The investigation never produced a body, a weapon or a crime scene. The only things missing from that house were Nancy and her favorite winter coat.

  • CONSPIRACY THEORY: Annabelle: The Warrens' Haunted Doll

In 1970, a nursing student in Connecticut was given a Raggedy Ann doll for her birthday. Within weeks she and her roommate believed it was moving around their apartment on its own, leaving handwritten notes, and attacking a friend. They called Ed and Lorraine Warren, the self-described demonologists who would later become the most famous paranormal investigators in America. The Warrens declared the doll haunted by a demonic presence, took it home, and sealed it in a glass case in their occult museum in Monroe, Connecticut. Fifty years later, a Hollywood franchise had made the doll a household name, the museum had been closed by zoning officials, and Annabelle was touring the country in front of paying crowds. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson explores the young women whose story started it all, the investigators who built a career on it, and the strange afterlife of a child's toy that became one of the most feared objects in the world.

  • UNSOLVED: Casino Heir: Ted Binion

Ted Binion was 21 when he took over the casino floor at Binion's Horseshoe, the no-limits gambling hall his father Benny built in Las Vegas, and he ran it for 30 years. By March 1998, regulators had revoked his gaming license for good. That July, he had 24 tons of silver buried 12 feet underground on a lot in Pahrump. That September, he was found dead on a mattress in his den, an empty bottle of Xanax beside him, and police called it an overdose and left without sealing the room. Two days later, deputies found three men digging up his silver, and within a year the coroner had reclassified his death and two people were facing murder charges. In Part 1 of Murder: True Crime Stories, host Carter Roy introduces Ted Binion and the gambling empire he grew up inside, the addiction and mob ties that cost him the casino, and the unsecured house that shaped every question asked about his death ever since. Please note, this episode contains discussion of substance abuse and suicide and may not be suitable for all audiences.

  • Reddit's Most Disturbing Deceptions

What happens when the people closest to you have been lying from day one?

Alexis Linkletter and Sabrina Deana-Roga react to four of Reddit's most disturbing deceptions. A woman discovers her boyfriend's online friend group may have been him the whole time. A boyfriend hides a device in his girlfriend's closet and plays dumb while it slowly drives her to paranoia. A woman realizes the new man she's dating may have targeted her to get closer to her famous ex-husband. And in a listener submission from our subreddit, a woman inherits her abusive grandfather's estate and uncovers documents that make her question how her mother really died. Alexis and Sabrina hear each other's stories for the first time as they dig into the lies, the red flags, and the updates that followed.

Plus, Kaelyn Moore, host of Heart Starts Pounding and the Crime House original Clues, joins the conversation for the final story. Listen to Clues and Heart Starts Pounding wherever you get your podcasts.

  • Brandon Swanson: The 47-Minute Call

In May 2008, 19-year-old Brandon Swanson called his parents to say his car had slid off the road and he needed a ride. He swore he knew exactly where he was. But when his parents' flashing headlights never found him, Brandon started walking toward town, his father still on the line, until he yelled two words and went silent. What began as a routine favor became one of Minnesota's most confounding disappearances: an officer who said Brandon had a "right to be missing," his car found twenty-five miles from where he swore he was, and almost two hours of his final night that no one has ever explained.
