The two schools in this highly-competitive playoff are Firelands High School in Oberlin, representing several mid-county communities, and Vermilion High School, representing a community along the Lake Erie shoreline. As quarterfinalists, both schools won in the first round of competitions (with the Vermilion victory coincidentally our previous broadcast).

Steele High School in Amherst, Ohio, and Avon Lake High School, two schools that have produced championship winners in previous years. Adult listeners have often commented on being surprised at what the students know and what they don't know. It's good to remember that all of today's high schoolers were born in the 21st century after events like 9/11, and long after Watergate and the Kennedy assassination, which are burned into the memories of those of us who were alive at the time.

Welcome back to this program featuring the schools of Lorain county, Ohio. Here begins the program season that began early in 2025. Originally released at the end of January, it pits Firelands High School against Lake Ridge Academy. Lake Ridge is a private school in North Ridgeville, Ohio, and Firelands, located in Oberlin, represents the area of the historic Firelands of the Connecticut Western Reserve established in Northern Ohio in the nineteenth century. The schools have similar enrollments but Lake Ridge is among the schools that have won our championship five times. Don't count Firelands out, though; they have an excellent team this year. This was the year's first show, and the "Current Events" round actually focused on looking back to 2024, so it isn't that current. It's round two, about six minutes into the program, and asks for names of famous people who died that year: gone but not forgotten….well perhaps by some high school students. Listen and see if you remember them all. It follows the initial round that starts things off with general knowledge. We hope you enjoy this competition from Lorain County, Ohio, here in mid-America. Both schools have produced champions in the past, but the unique thing about these teams is that each one contains not one but two previous winners of our program's "Standout Scholar Award."
