This is first semifinal contest of our 2024 season as we approach the conclusion of our summer reruns of "Scholastic Games," our weekly high school quiz program featuring the schools of Lorain County, Ohio. The show is produced from January through May of each year. In this week's offering we continue the playoffs leading up to our 34th annual county championship. The winner here will advance to the program's championship to be released September 22nd.

The teams are from Avon Lake High School and Vermilion High School. Both schools have produced championship-winning teams for this program. After the championship we will again present each week the programs from this year which took place between January and May.

The teams on today's presentation are from Vermilion High School from that suburban community bordering Lake Erie, and Midview High School from Grafton in the southern part of the county. Both schools have produced county academic champions in past years.

The teams are from Elyria High School and North Ridgeville High School. Both schools have produced championship-winning teams for this program. In fact, Elyria High is one of only four schools to have won five different championships. Ridgeville has won two, but it has been two decades since either of them has won, so they are both due!

The playoffs will continue, with the 2024 championship to be rebroadcast next month following the last quarterfinal and the semifinals. Then starting in late September, we will re-release the 2025 program series which was first presented between January and May of this year.

The teams are from Avon Lake High School and Brookside High School in Ohio's Sheffield-Sheffield Lake district. Both schools won in their first outings of the season. Reviewing past years, Avon Lake is a two-time championship-winning school. Brookside, a growing district, has consistently entered our playoffs in the past several seasons, so it could go either way.

The teams are from Marion L. Steele High School in Amherst, Ohio, and Black River High School from Sullivan, Ohio. Both schools won in their first outings of the season. River is a relative newcomer to the program; Steele is a past championship-winning school in our earlier years of competition.

“Scholastic Games,” is weekly high school quiz program featuring the schools of Lorain County, Ohio, in the heart of mid-America.   It is produced from January through May of each year.  This week’s offering, another post-school-year encore show from 2024,  is that year’s “Wilccard Competition,” a playoff between the two highest-scoring losing teams in the first round of competitions.  Designated “wildcards” are teams that, in most years, achieved higher losing scores than most of the winning scores, so they are given a second chance.  Avoiding elimination like other losing teams, the winner here will advance to the program’s quarterfinals in playoffs for the annual county academic championship.

The teams are from Firelands High School in Oberlin, Ohio,  and Midview High School. In Grafton, Ohio.  Both of these schools are perennial competitors on Scholastic Games.  Midview is a past winner of our academic championship, an honor which has eluded Firelands so far.

Should I keep including this reminder?)   This is a playoff between two teams that achieved lower winning scores than teams that got byes to the quarterfinals, so only the winner here advances to that level.  The high school teams are from Horizon Science Academy in Lorain, Ohio,  and Vermilion High School.  Horizon is a Charter School and it’s only its second year in this series of competitions, but Vermilion has competed in the last 34 years, perhaps giving the school an edge. Of course the individuals on the teams are newcomers.   Vermilion is a past championship winner on the program, but not recently.  Let’s see how the teams do!

Here is another post-school-year encore show from 2024.   It’s from March of that year, so the current events round is from that time, too.  Why does it seem so long ago?  Anyway, it’s a couple of great teams.  One is from Brookside High School in Sheffield Village, Ohio, and the other is from Firelands High School in Oberlin.  Both schools have consistently made our playoffs in past years.

The school year is ended, so here is another encore show from 2024,   This one aired in March of that year, Women’s Month, and the theme round is famous women (though the students were not advised of this ahead of time).  Of course the current events round is from a year and a half ago too.  The teams are excellent ones though, from Keystone High in LaGrange, Ohio, and from Medina County’s Black River High School (a district that includes part of Lorain county.  Keystone is a past championship winner and Black River, a relative newcomer to the program has produced some excellent teams.  Enjoy the show!
