This is the fifth of this year's programs, the first eight of which are the first round of competitions, after which playoffs begin among the winning schools and the highest scoring among losing scores. This week's teams are from two of the fastest-growing communities of the county, those of North Ridgeville High School and Vermilion High School. Steele High School in Amherst, Ohio, and Avon Lake High School, two schools that have produced championship winners in previous years. Adult listeners have often commented on being surprised at what the students know and what they don't know. It's good to remember that all of today's high schoolers were born in the 21st century after events like 9/11, and long after Watergate and the Kennedy assassination, which are burned into the memories of those of us who were alive at the time.

In the ensuing programs of this year's series a lot of teams will be heard, but these two will meet in a rematch for the show's annual championship! Each of the schools represented on this particular show have produced five championship-winning teams in past years. They are northern Ohio's Elyria High School and Olmsted Falls High School. Welcome back to this program featuring the schools of Lorain county, Ohio. Here begins the program season that began early in 2025. Originally released at the end of January, it pits Firelands High School against Lake Ridge Academy. Lake Ridge is a private school in North Ridgeville, Ohio, and Firelands, located in Oberlin, represents the area of the historic Firelands of the Connecticut Western Reserve established in Northern Ohio in the nineteenth century. The schools have similar enrollments but Lake Ridge is among the schools that have won our championship five times. Don't count Firelands out, though; they have an excellent team this year. This was the year's first show, and the "Current Events" round actually focused on looking back to 2024, so it isn't that current. It's round two, about six minutes into the program, and asks for names of famous people who died that year: gone but not forgotten….well perhaps by some high school students. Listen and see if you remember them all. It follows the initial round that starts things off with general knowledge. We hope you enjoy this competition from Lorain County, Ohio, here in mid-America. Both schools have produced champions in the past, but the unique thing about these teams is that each one contains not one but two previous winners of our program's "Standout Scholar Award." The teams on today's presentation are from Vermilion High School from that suburban community bordering Lake Erie, and Midview High School from Grafton in the southern part of the county. Both schools have produced county academic champions in past years.

The teams are from Elyria High School and North Ridgeville High School. Both schools have produced championship-winning teams for this program. In fact, Elyria High is one of only four schools to have won five different championships. Ridgeville has won two, but it has been two decades since either of them has won, so they are both due!

The playoffs will continue, with the 2024 championship to be rebroadcast next month following the last quarterfinal and the semifinals. Then starting in late September, we will re-release the 2025 program series which was first presented between January and May of this year.
