Dialogues on Education is a companion program to the weekly quiz program Scholastic Games of Lorain County. Each week, program host Bob Tayek speaks to individuals who can shed light on a particular facet of the world of education, from the instruction of children to the broadening of experiences for older adults.

On this week's program, Jennifer Harmon, Community Engagement Director of the Elyria Public Library, one of the region's largest, discusses what's new at the library, including many programs serving readers from the very young to the senior set. Among them are the 1000 Books program for pre-schoolers and advances in technology to serve modern readers in many ways. She also gives start dates for the popular summer reading program. The Elyria Library system is the oldest in Lorain County, dating from 1870. Today it has several branches and the new headquarters facility in downtown Elyria where our Scholastic Games broadcasts are produced.

“Scholastic Games,” is weekly high school quiz program featuring the schools of Lorain County, Ohio, in the heart of mid-America.   It is produced from January through May of each year. 

The teams this week are Brookside High from Sheffield Village, Ohio, and Elyria Catholic, Lorain county’s only Catholic high school and the fourth non-public school represented in this year’s competitions.  The Brookside team consists of Carter Grega, Simon Kramp, and team captain Elliot Rion.  From Elyria Catholic, the team members are Vito Careno,  Noah Hanlon, and team captain Ryan Manville.   Victims of early postponements, these teams are the last to compete in the first round of competitions.

This is our tenth program, but actually the eighth as it ends our set of first appearances.  As playoff qualification is based on comparative scores, we were able to hold our first quarterfinals prior to this program.  This show will determine the rest of the playoff teams.  If the winner scores higher than 270 points it advances directly to quarterfinals.   If the losing team scores higher than 230 points it may become a “wildcard” and earn a playoff position.  

 All programs are eliminations from this point forward.   Shows will continue to be released Monday or Tuesday each week until the end of May when our championship broadcast will be held.

School security is a vital concern these days and one Lorain county district has taken a significant step forward.  The Vermillion school system has installed a first-of-its-type school security system with direct links to law enforcement in the case of an intruder to any of Vermillion’s three campuses. In this interview, details about this cutting-edge electronic system are provided by the Vermilion Schools’ Assistant Superintendent Wes Weaver.

This ninth program of our 35th season is our SECOND QUARTERFINAL.  Even as two postponed first-round competitions have yet to take place, the scores of this week’s teams, like last week’s were sufficiently high to qualify them for quarterfinals, so joining Vermilion High School as the second of our four semfinalist schools will be one of today’s high school teams, one from Marion L. Steele High School in Amherst, Ohio, and the second from the district the stems from Sullivan, Ohio, to the southwest corner of Lorain county, Black River High School. 

The Amherst team consists of Nathan Stewart, Tony Davis, and team captain Aiden Workman, who won the program’s “Standout Scholar Award” in his first appearance on the program.  From Black River, the team members are Josh Adkins, Stryker Charlton, and team captain Nick Obarski.  Black River’s team is unique in that it lost in its first competition, to an outstanding team from Avon, Ohio, but its losing score of 300 was higher than most of our winning scores, earning it a “wildcard” slot in the quarterfinals.  In fact, its losing score was slightly higher than the winning score of its quarterfinal opponent.  (Weeks ago, Amherst defeated Avon Lake 280 to 180!)  Their similar performances earlier virtually guarantee a competitive program.

Horizon Science Academy is a large charter school in Lorain that competed in Scholastic Games quiz broadcasts for its second year this season. The organization is opening a new elementary school in South Lorain this coming Fall. In this interview, officials with the new school, spokesperson Jessika Varner and incoming Assistant Principal Selahaddin Arifoglu, discuss their plans for the school, Horizon Science Academy Lorain South. They provide some detail about the curriculum for this new charter School specializing in grade levels K-5.

This seventh program of our 35th season is our FIRST QUARTERFINAL.  Two postponed first-round competitions have yet to take place, but the scores of this week’s teams were sufficiently high to qualify them for the quarterfinals, so our first semfinalist school will be determined in this week’s broadcast.  Our first quarterfinal teams are from the highschool in Vermilion, Ohio,  and Keystone High School in LaGrange, Ohio. 

The Vermilion team consists of Abigail Matos, Connor Morrow, and team captain Stephen Stetz.  From Keystone the team members are Patrick Cahill, Eli McConoughey, and team captain Colton Smith.   .  Even though two teams, due to postponements,  are yet to compete in the first round of competitions, these schools are already qualified for quarterfinals, and one will emerge as a semifinalist in today’s playoff.

 All winning teams will advance to a playoff level, and those with the six highest scores, such as Vermiilion and Keystone,  advance directly to quarterfinals.  Included among the winners will be the highest-scoring losing team, to be designated a “wild card.”  If that team outscores five winning teams with its losing score, it too advances to quarterfinals.   Subsequent programs will be released Monday or Tuesday each week until the end of May when our championship broadcast will be held

Exactly what is Artificial Intelligence, and what is its effect on our lives and those of our students? What does it consist of and how is it used in the classroom? These are some of the answers we seek from Amanda Sears, the Technology Integration Specialist for the Amherst City Schools. She explains its uses and how it is affecting our education process and what teachers are to do when they encounter students using AI in their academic projects.

 In this Dialogues program, we hear from local Entrepreneur and Philanthropist Fred Ode and his new, major effort to have schools start teaching “The Test of Life.” He has developed a high school curriculum to deal with the complexities of life with everything from interviewing, communicating effectively, writing professionally and achieving financial literacy. As Ode explains, research is now showing that even college graduates have terrible shortcomings in these areas and are unable to function in the real world.

This sixth program of our 35th season features teams from  Open Door Christian School, a private school  in Elyria and Horizon Science Academy, a charter school in Lorain, Ohio.   The team from Open Door is a rare all-girl team consisting of McKenna Moore, Georgia Schmitkons, and team captain Molly Felty.   Competing for Horizon Science Academy  are Kayla Kyles,  Derreon Thomas.  and team captain Tim Vovak.  All winning teams will advance to a playoff level, and those with the six highest scores will advance directly to quarterfinals.  Included among the winners will be the highest-scoring losing team, to be designated a “wild card.” 

Subsequent programs will be released Monday (6 p.m. EST) or Tuesday each week until the end of May when our championship broadcast will be held.

This sixth program of our 35th season features teams from Keystone  High School in LaGrange  and Midview High School in Grafton, Ohio.   The team from Keystone consists of Patrick Cahill, Eli McConaughey and team captain Colton Smith.   Competing for Midview  are Percy Rose,  Riley Mjolnir.  and team captain Reuben Greenly.  All winning teams will advance to a playoff level, and those with the six highest scores will advance directly to quarterfinals.  Included among the winners will be the highest-scoring losing team, to be designated a “wild card.” 

Subsequent programs will be released Monday or Tuesday each week until the end of May when our championship broadcast will be held.
