Soaring food inflation could mean that schools have to choose between serving smaller portions and using cheaper ingredients, warns the boss of one of the UK’s largest food wholesalers. “This is going to lead to some difficult decisions for school caterers: either they are going to serve smaller portions or use cheaper ingredients, which isn’t going to be good for the children,” Chief Executive of Bidfood Andrew Selley told Today’s Justin Webb. He’s also urging the government to extend the availability of free school meals, aimed at children from low-income families, to secondary schools. Selley’s comments come a day after the Bank of England’s Andrew Bailey blamed the war in Ukraine for UK inflation reaching its highest level in almost three decades.
