Science Fiction Rating System

Our season of Star Wars comes to an end with Gareth Edwards' spin-off prequel Rogue One, also the first of our 2016 film season! Opinions are all over the place as we discuss what this film gets right, and what it doesn't, before one of the more contentious rankings in quite some time.

Next week we continue our 2016 films with Shin Godzilla

Its 2021 and before we get back to ranking films we look back at one of the few highlights of 2020, the second season of The Mandalorian. We work through the big moments throughout the season before playing a quick game of Mando or Boba and analysing the ridiculous upcoming slate of Star Wars shows. There are so many.

Next week, the Star Wars train rolls on with Rogue One!

Happy Life Day! We continue our tradition of watching Star Wars for Christmas but this year with a bit of a twist. For too long we've ignored the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special but as the worst year any of us can remember wraps up we decided to break glass in case of misery and trotted out this most peculiar of experiences.

All the Star Wars stars you know and love, plus a four armed chef in drag, Jefferson Starship and a big old dose of Wookie onanism, it's Star Wars like you've never seen it before.

So, cosy up in front of the fire and watch along with SFRS, and have a very merry Christmas!

As we approach Christmas we continue watching some festive flicks from years past- it's a big slice of '80s nostalgia, Twins! Schwarzenegger and DeVito are unlikely siblings in this Reitman classic. Join us for discussion of pretty foxes, nature vs. nurture, Alex's most inscrutable quiz yet and generally just a lot of whistful mewing about happier times.

Next week we celebrate christmas with...well, you'll have to wait and see.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's a podcast about the film Superman. We take an extensive look at Richard Donner's superhero blockbuster and ask the important questions: What food item did Marlon Brando want to be cast as? Is the Lois and Clark flying scene the worst scene in this film, or in cinematic history? And what's the proper etiquette when finding a baby inside a meterorite? All this and more!

This week it's back to the '70s for John Carpenter's student film Dark Star. The film that sort of inspired Alien, its a film that is not for everyone, but is very much for us. Alien beachballs, sentient bombs, and lots of nothing, it's the film that's got everything! Actually no, it really isn't.

Next week we start getting festive with nostalgic xmas blockbuster Superman, the 1978 one!

This week we interrupt our regular scheduled ranking for an exclusive interview with Michael Ironside aka baddie Richter from Total Recall. The Verhoeven classic has been re-released to celebrate its 30th Anniversary and so Alex got to (virtually) sit down with Michael to discuss the working with Verhoeven, Michael's sci-fi roots and the book adaptation he wished he could've starred in.

If you want the video version of this interview, you can watch it here!

Or how about listen to what we thought about Total Recall back in July on Episode 151

Next week things return to normal as we watch John Carpenter's Dark Star!

Many moons ago we watched Short Circuit and kept saying 'I thought this happened.' throughout. This week the cliffhanger is resolved and we discover if we were actually thinking of Short Circuit 2, or if there's something more serious going on and we're all going senile.

Elsewhere we discuss the bizarre casting of Fisher Stevens, Sam and Alex reminisce about their time in Toronto, and there is definitely not a quiz. No quiz here. Nope.

Next week, an SFRS exclusive: Alex sits down around a virtual table for a 40th Anniversay Total Recall chat with Michael Ironside!

This week we're going all the way back to 1965 to watch The 10th Victim, the italian sci-fi film that 'inspired' Austin Powers. Bad dubbing, amazing costumes and a terrible ending, it's the film that has everything! Join us for crocodile death rolls, terrible robots and high fashion!

Next week we find out if all the stuff we thought was in Short Circuit 2 when we watched the original is actually there after all.
