This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes wrap up their Scream Lead Up series with "Scream VI", the final stop before diving into "Scream 7".
Both Mike Butler and Mike Field still like this entry, but it stands as the weakest of the franchise so far in their rankings. A big part of that comes from the absence of Sidney Prescott and the somewhat awkward shoehorning of Gale into the story. The film also lacks the sharp meta commentary that defines the series, and the villain reveal and finale lean heavily into goofiness rather than tension.
That said, "Scream VI" is still a good time. The kills are strong, the set pieces are memorable, and several sequences stand out, including the Gale versus Ghostface showdown and the tense Halloween subway ride. Melissa Barrera continues to grow into the role of Sam, delivering one of the stronger performances of the new era.
With the Lead Up complete, the Mikes also rank the franchise so far and reflect on where the series stands heading into its next chapter. Even if "Scream VI" doesn't reach the heights of its predecessors, it proves the franchise still knows how to entertain.
So join the Mikes as the go through each film in the "Scream" saga leading up to the release of "Scream 7".
