  • Mind Games #4- How do you define success w/Tim Alison

    How do you define success?

As a teenager or young adult, how many people asked you that question?

My guess is not many. There is a reason for that. In a society that values conformity, the definition of success has already been given to us. Get an education, get a job, start at the bottom, work your way up, accumulate assets (house, car, etc.), or some version of that.

It’s all about personal achievements. The speed at which you achieve these milestones is the measure of your success.

It’s important that we buy into this concept. Can you imagine the chaos that would emerge if we encouraged every child to create their own definition of success? If we stressed, from an early age, that you, and only you, get to decide what is important to you. The logical next step is to build your life around those things.

Listen in as I tell you how to do that in this short clip.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I’d love to hear your thoughts, comments, and stories, or just make a connection.

  • Dreams Don’t Work Unless You Do | Estie Rand

After a decade+ experience in the non-profit world and hitting the CIO level, Estie Rand voluntarily left her job.  Internal politics had turned her workplace experience toxic. Quitting was not easy since she was the main supporter of her growing family.

Her job search got off to a rocky start when she told an experienced head-hunter that her dream was to work as a small business consultant. This “professional” laughed and told Estie she needed another 20 years business experience and that no one would ever take her seriously.

Luckily for her 427 clients (and growing), Estie didn’t let that uninformed opinion discourage her.

In this episode Estie talks about the path she took to transition into a full time entrepreneur and explains why:

    • Marketing is a lot like going on a first date
  • Client education often comes before client acquisition
  • Why she listens first and speaks third (she listens 2nd a well)
  • Taking a strategic approach to online branding and marketing is so important.
  • Estie has a down to earth communication style, and an obvious passion for helping her fellow entrepreneurs.

  • You Can Have It All w/Fraser Cameron

Fraser Cameron is an Epic Dad. That’s wasn’t always the case. The wake up call came for Fraser when his son Will met him at the gate one evening, and said “Dad why are you always so grumpy?”

That jolting moment was the wake up call Fraser needed to make big changes. He quit his job, and embarked upon his journey to become an epic dad and to make a massive impact.

You see Fraser believes that you can have it all. He says there is no such thing as work-life balance. It’s all about integration and getting simple and specific about the things you really want in live.

For the parents out there, he also reminds us that time with our children is finite, especially when they are at an age when we can influence them and prepare them for the future.

This short clip will inspire and challenge. By the way, Fraser tells us that an #EPICDAD is a dad that creates choice and opportunity at home, work and play. Making a massive impact along the way. It’s about creating time, freedom and fulfilment. Its about being an amazing father, husband, colleague and man! Truly having it all. When we do this, we show our kids how to create new possible.

  • Mind Games #3 - Why Winners Quit w/Tim Alison

The myth that winners never quit is an oft repeated and harmful falsehood that is responsible for so much pain.

If you don’t believe me, ask Seth Godin. In 2007 he wrote a book called “The Dip” that in his words, teaches you when to quit. He goes on to explain that winners quit all the time.

He was right then, and he’s right today.

So why has the concept that quitting is bad become ingrained into the belief systems of so many people, and why should you care?

It gets there because we hear stories of successful people, often entrepreneurs or celebrities, who achieved their goal through sheer perseverance. Or so it seems. So when we’re having a tough go of it, it’s easy to tell ourselves that all we have to do is put our head down, keep doing what we’ve been doing, and wait for things to get better.

This is a dangerous belief system because it flies in the face of common sense. Persisting in doing the same thing can take us closer to or further away from the things we want. We have to learn to distinguish between the goals that we’re chasing, and the path that we’re taking to get there. So how do you do that?

Well first of all it's helpful to know why you believe that persistence is the right approach. So I share with you 3 reasons why many of us are in denial. And I also give you five key questions you can ask yourself if a part of you is questioning the path your on.

Name one time when quitting something was the right thing to do?

  • Education Must Change| Matt Cubbler

Growing up Matt Cubbler’s purpose was clear. His job was to protect his “mentally retarded” brother (that was the term in use at that time for a child with autism).

When Matt was 18 his brother died in a car accident. It was as if a part of Matt also died that day. He went on to serve his country with honor (he was highly decorated), in 2001, following 9/11 Matt was one of the select few who were selected to be an Air Marshall. Even the birth of his daughter did not save Matt. He knew he would protect and care for her, but he still felt broken.

After the birth of his son, his grandmother handed Matt a homemade quilt made from some of his brother’s clothes. She kept them for 13 years before deciding the time was right. On that day Matt began to rediscover his purpose.

That very night he went down into his office and wrote a 26,000 word book as a tribute to his brother. He published the book and donated proceeds to the special needs school his brother had attended. Bad knees and all he ran across the state (3 consecutive marathons) and raised another $25,000. He opened a fitness facility to work with people with neurological diseases. And now Matt has decided he knows how to change the mindset of an entire generation of children. Based upon his past track record I wouldn't bet against him.
